This song always delivers no matter how many times I hear it (and I listen to it A LOT!!) He’s got all the octaves and there are times he sounds like an instrument. That is an ancient Kazakh instrument called a kolbyz. Dimash is a 29 yr old very patriotic Kazakh who sings in 14 languages, plays 9 instruments, has a PhD in composition, composes a lot of his music, he sings in just about any genre, including excellent rock, pop and rap along with his obvious perfection of classical voice and opera training.

Dimash and the composer of this song, Igor Krutoy (at piano), often use archetypes in their music. This epic piece evokes the journey of soul (wandering in ancient times, haunted by memories, and lost loves ) as it finds itself in an expanded state of awareness (new ground, chance to know who I am, begin again). Hesitantly at first, he even stumbles a bit, but with growing confidence, Dimash takes us on a journey and with that last refrain, he totally owns this new ground.
Like in many of his arrangements, Dimash incorporates sacred music traditions of different cultures and ages into something uniquely his own. The music of ancient cultures often used chants, overtone singing, and melismatic techniques to induce a hypnotic trance in the listener. Dimash is not only aware of the power of music to alter one’s state of consciousness, he wields this power masterfully, but always with great respect. His friend since his teenage years, Erlan Bekchurin, is a brilliant arranger and knows exactly what Dimash wants to accomplish. Together they create magic. Dimash insisted on the use of the kobyz, an instrument which was used in Kazakh shamanism to communicate with spirits, and it fits beautifully. Hi dude, this song, the whole video, the lyrics, everything presents the whole birth process, from beginning to end. A new life is coming. At the very beginning, 9 women and 9 men hide Dimash. The crazy vocalizing in the middle of the song is the mother's cry. And the last long note at the end means I ARRIVED.

He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m a real fan of movies like this that have such a mystical vibe. I think this is rather an Arabic influence. And it was such a great idea by Dimash to use the Kobysz (the instrument you mentioned) for that.
The kobyz is a very old Kazakh folk instrument and it’s spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the kobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter.
Dimash is from Kazakhstan and believe me, you’ve seen nothing at all. In my opinion you have discovered the best singer in the world. He has perfect pitch and he currently has a vocal range of 7,7 octaves (vocal fry C1(B0) - whistle D8 off the piano) At least what he has shown us so far. He plays several instruments like piano, dombra (a kazach instrument), drums, marimba and more. He has classical as well as contemporary vocal training and sings in different genres from opera to pop, jazz, Kazakh folk, ballads and he even raps a bit. And often he skillfully mixes several genres in one song. And meanwhile in more than 10 languages. The latest songs (from Tokyo Jazz Festival in November 2021) are Ikanaide in Japanese and at his concert in Almaty on September 23, 2022 he sang a new song in Spanish (about 7 languages in one concert).
But many of my favorite songs are in his native tongue. He is a nice, respectful and humble person. He respects people regardless of their original, religion or profession. He truly loves his homeland Kazakhstan and his people with all his heart and always shows it with pride in many of his songs, concerts and interviews. During his concerts in Dubai, Düsseldorf and Prague in 2022, before he performed his song War And Peace, he told the audience he loves all people in every country. And I absolutely believe this. His concert in September 23, 2022 was amazing. Believe it or not but he really gets better and better.

Here he sings in a competition for young musicians, called New Wave in Sochi, Russia. He was there in 2018 as a guest.
The gentleman at the end you see standing and clapping is the famous Russian/Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter Igor Krutoy. He has come out of retirement to work with Dimash. True masterpieces were created. He writes songs that only Dimash could sing with his vocal range, such as Olimpico, Stranger or Ave Maria. You’ll often see him accompanying Dimash on the piano (like here in Stranger). The two have no contract. Their cooperation is based more on mutual trust. It’s more like a father/son relationship. These last three songs are mind-blowing and will leave you speechless. I promise.
