@@ECAbrams i'm a video editor in Venice (Italy). I do personal work and i also do some editing for the national television, but the first approach to After Effects was through your videos and I follow you eagerly each time you post something! You really "showed me the way" XD
This is the first video of yours I've watched. You are the first channel that I've set notifications on. Wow. Great voice, great explanation, great tips. Amazing!
I was having trouble with the graph paper example, the second repeater was offset no matter what I did with the anchor points, etc. I downloaded Evan's files, which of course were perfect but used his suggestion in the comments to hit UU on the layers to compare what transformations had happened. Then I saw that I had missed a point he made at 4:17, where we hear him say to transform the second repeater not by position, but while he says that, he changes the position value from 100, 0 to 0, 0. I didn't see him change it, and that's what was throwing everything off. After I did that on the second repeater, all was well. I hope this helps someone else, I saw quite a few comments that sounded like folks were having this same issue.
Wow! Just checking in after a bit of a hiatus doing this kind of work and man, your audio has improved outta sight. Hats off to whoever is mixing it for you. Now back to the tutorial!
Subscribed to this channel after watching a few of your videos on Adobe live. Been out of touch with AE for over a decade and trying to sort through the endless menus of new effects has been challenging. Really like your tutorial style. Very uncomplicated but really useful and straight to the point.

What a useful educational video! I need this video for my portfolio, and it really helps a lot. Thank you. Your voice is also fascinating which makes me subscribe immediately :)
QUESTION: How do you fix problems with the anchor point position for those grids? I keep having the problem, that my lines are not rotating around the center of the line but slightly next to it. I already tried all the ways I know about. Aligning anchor point to center, manually putting anchor point of the main layer as well as transform anchors to the center, creating the line perfectly centered with snap to grid enabled. Still, I cannot once get it done properly. Can someone PLS help? Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial, really interesting. I did have trouble figuring out the difference between the position of the Ellipse Path, of Ellipse 1 and the overall shape layer. Same with the anchor point of each. Particularly when I tried to mirror the last dot example and it went outside the screen limits. I tried to apply Colorama to it too but didn't work out so well. Will keep at it. Thanks again.
Dude! Let's have a beer in South Africa, and put 2 repeaters and that, as to create a beautiful cascade of beers in South Africa. :) Thanks for awesome work and great audio to accompany your Jedi-ness.
If you're trying to make a line grid and having issues with it being weirdly out of order with the second repeater. Do this. To make the first/base line, double tap the rectangle shape icon on the top toolbar, then open its rectangle path 1 size adjustment, untoggle the horizontal/vertical scale link. And play with the 2nd value (height) to change the line width. Now do the 2 repeater process. This ensures a perfectly centered line to start with.
If you have issues with the anchor point not working correctly: the repeater references the centre of the shape's coordinate system, AE doesn't give access to this so you have to copy the value of the anchorPoint of your layer to the anchor point parameter of the repeater, or snap to the grid ..
Very nice! It can even be used to play around with (imperfect) tessellations! One question I have: is possible to make individual layers out of the repeated shapes and keep the grid position data?
Hey Evan, I'm having a real problem with the line grid. No matter what I do, my grids are always offset in the middle and don't line up correctly. I tried downloading your file and copying the repeaters from your elements, yet the problem persists. I know this means it's an issue with the line (shape) I've created, but it's a two-point straight line with no variation to yours, yet the grid never lines up correctly. Do you happen to know anything that could be causing this?
Are you drawing your line using the grid? It's important that the line lives at the middle centre relative to the groups inside the contents. Perhaps that's what's going on.
@@ECAbrams Hey, that's got it. Very strange, as I was drawing them perfectly to the edges and aligning them to centre with the anchor point right in the middle. Cheers for being such a good teacher

this was fun
Do you know if the repeater Grids does the same as the Utility Box? Thank you
It's similar in output, but different in method. Utility Box, as I understand it, seeks to emulate the mogaph module of c4d.
It knows if the Utility Box can be installed in version CS6 of AE ?
How can I do this with an image instead of a path ?
you will need to use an effect of some kind. You might use the image as a particle sprite for example.
Very nice
