The Last Run of QJ 6988

  • In mid-June, QJ 6988 made one last run in order to reach the new Railroading Heritage of Midwest America shop in Silvis, IL. On the first day the locomotive traveled east from Newton, IA to Silvis and on second day it ran a round-trip from Silvis to Bureau Junction, IL in order to turn the locomotive. The QJ put on a spectacular show all weekend, pounding the rails of the Iowa Interstate Railroad for perhaps the last time.
    This video contains scenes from both days of action. This will be part of a longer segment available later this year on DVD, Blu-ray, and Vimeo's streaming service.

    I was lucky enough in my former line of work/play to drive the Baldwin steam engine at the Texas State Historical park, and the steam engine at the L and N park in Louisville and to be an engineer for 30 minutes driving Tweetsie at the Tweetsie Railroad Park. And last but not least Old number 1 of the Cinchfield Line with the Hatcher Brothers that restored the engine. It was the Santa Claus Special that stopped at every small berg and Santa would give out presents to the Children of Appalachia. From Spartanburg to the Tri Cities in Tennessee. What wonderful memories.

    Imagine a big future gathering of big steam in Silvis, Illinois with 6988, 3985, 261, 5511 and 7081. Now that would be awesome!

      I don't think they'll be coming back anytime soon, though 1522 nearly ran again. Sometime in the early 2010's, the WMSR had plans to purchase 1522 and restore her to operation so she could be 734's running mate. However, the NMOT said no, and the plans were dropped. After that, the WMSR went to the B&O Museum, and the rest is history.

    The QJ is based on the Soviet FD class 2-10-2, which was built in Ukraine; that flag's fitting in multiple respects #slavaukrainiy

    • @supergenesisstation1991
      @supergenesisstation1991 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But didn't QJ mostly work in china? I recall that this locomotive was last used in china.

    • @eriknewland3686
      @eriknewland3686 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@supergenesisstation1991 except for a few locomotives imported to the US, all QJs served their careers in China. However, the locomotive the QJ was based on was the Soviet class FD 2-10-2 from the 1930s, which was built in Voroshilovgrad, Ukrainian SSR (now Luhansk, Ukraine). Many of these locomotives were imported second hand to China in the later years, and served as the basis for the QJ. The QJ, which was built almost 50 years after its Soviet counterpart, incorporated more modern features not present on the FD, like boxpock drivers and a higher-pressure, welded boiler.
