I’ve got a 2019 stumpy 27.5 (comp alu which is the cheapest one available) and despite its weight, it rides really well up and down hills. It’s awesome on tech and flowing trails and with 150mm travel front and rear, I was concerned I might blow through too quick but it’s been designed in a way that it feels like you get 180mm+. This bike is more than capable of tackling gnarly enduro trails as well as giving you all day comfort on an xc ride as I have discovered during this lockdown. I’m also 5’10” and ride the large.
Excellent review. I really like how you couch all the proclamations with "for me at my height and my riding style", instead of just "this sucks" or "this rocks" with no explanation like some reviews. I'm on a Stumpy 27 Large, also 5'10", and have to agree that the balance and "big BMX" feel is there and can imagine it would be more so on a medium, but the large gives that extra wheelbase and just the right amount of room to move around and keep the flow going on the gnarliest shit.
Thanks Justin! I think it's important to keep that perspective. I just got into a conversation earlier with someone about this very topic. In the grand scheme of things, who the hell am I to say a bike is "good or bad?" Nobody needs to hear that. They need to hear the rationale behind what I'm saying and how it could POTENTIALLY relate to them and their purchase decision. Man, it was a tough choice between medium and large for sure!!
I'm 5'10 and bought the Stumpy in medium. This combined with a 60mm stem is the perfect trail bike for me. Still agile and playful, but also comfortable enough for longer tours.
I couldn't agree more!! I would've loved to toss a 60mm on the medium and spend some more time on it. Where are you at? I'm curious what type of trail you are normally riding. I think most people here would appreciate the medium because the trails just aren't that fast and wouldn't benefit from the stability of the large.
Rich Drew Well I‘m from Luxembourg. The trails I know are also not that fast, but quite technical and there’s a lot of climbing, too. I ride mostly in the woods. The muddier the better ;-)
Awesome footage! I’ve had a few specialized bikes in my day and loved every one of them. They do tend to be on the pricey side but there is no doubt that the bike will be worthy. Keep up the great work because you just made me want to get out and ride my bike!
Owned and ridden 29 & 650b platforms enjoyed them immensely, especially the SWORKS Ohlins bike...and it goes w/o saying the famous “Butcher” tires named after a section of trail at one of my favorite places to ride Downieville, CA is an incredibly good tire! Another delicious flavor of bike, with that said I have to say, I am more than satisfied with my new DeVinci Troy! Great Stuff RD!

I did it to my 2018 Ibis Ripley and won the California Clydesdale State Championship with that setup. We are talking a $10,000 build however. 25lb/130mm is a quiver killer bike. The problem is it takes a bunch of money to build one! The default is a 120mm XC bike, which is my pick albeit a lack of lateral stiffness...an acceptable trade off vs. $$$ To answer your question yes I had Carbon Stumpies and Camber. The problem was back in 2015/16 they figured out that 120mm trail bike just isn’t enough...the 130/140 is pure magical...but it requires carefully build and lots of money. Watch Specialized in the coming years they are working hard with Loic Bruni and Ohlins developing suspension technology that will trickle down from DH. I rode the Ohlins SWORKS in both 29/650b in Santa Cruz/Downieville, despite some minor o-ring seal issues, it was the best suspension I’ve ever ridden...still. YES, for air sprung...still the best...It should make a come back, we’ll see! Happy Trails Partner! ~M
Good review, thank you. I’m looking at getting the 29r 2020 Stumpjumper Carbon frame (Troy Lee Design version) it comes with a Fox DHX2 coil. Fitting it out with components from the 2020 Stumpy expert

Although it’s not my true cross country bike it climbs well and I am excited to get on the downhill bike parks! I would like to see your review on a lower end model of the stumpy. Not many people can afford the S-works model. Great review man! Keep on pedaling!
Hey Jason! I'd love to get on the Evo in your neck of the woods and I think I'll get on a lower level Stumpy soon enough. I agree on not being able to afford the S Works, pretty pricey!
I got the Enduro, but I know people who ride the Stumpy and it's definitely a legit bike. Specialized is very popular around these parts. I'm also 5' 10", and I got a medium Enduro, put a bit longer stem and narrower carbon bars on it.

Hey Lars! I'm not. I'm on a quest to ride as many bikes as I can and have wanted to ride a Stumpjumper for quite some time now. I won't rule it out if they call ;)
Haha! I'd certainly hope so! I hope ti doesn't come across as though I'm trying to say the bike is the reason I can ride the way I do. I think it's more about what my input on the bike, based on my background and the trails I'm riding, can offer people that are interested. Does that make sense? I'd LOVE to ride all those bikes you mentioned on the exact same trails and see how they feel. For example, I was able to manual through the top of this section easier than I ever have before. In the grand scheme of things does that really matter? Tough to say, but I think it's worth noting. Another component is confidence. If a bike isn't confidence inspiring to me, I certainly won't be riding like I did in this video. It doesn't mean its a "bad bike," it just means I didn't mesh well with it for some reason. I got on a Fezzari La Sal Peak in Sedona and just couldn't get comfortable. It's got a very steep seat tube and is very slack. Those are two things I'm just not good with. I probably would've acclimated over time, but I think that's a prime example of how my feelings on a bike might help someone out with their decision. Hope that makes sense my man.

@@richdrewtherideseries heheh thanks I saw there was a Rich Drew video from 21 seconds ago and I was like HECK YEAH
So now you are sponsored by specialized?
Hey Lars! I'm not. I'm on a quest to ride as many bikes as I can and have wanted to ride a Stumpjumper for quite some time now. I won't rule it out if they call ;)
I'm sorry my dude but I think that if you jump on a trek, yeti, ibis, canyon, (to name a few) the BAD- A$$ riding outcome is gonna be the same!
S-works.... WAY out of my budget.
