A slip lead arrived today and took the Dachsund 4yo for a walk tonight rather than Halti that he constantly tries to take off by wiping his face on the grass and takes 20 mins before he settles down. He walked next me on a path by the river and through the neighbourhood with dogs barking from their houses and used the lead and leave it command and he chilled. I’ve learnt so much from your videos and taking him out to the dog park ( with Halti on, today to the dog beach for a swim and he was overwhelmed with sea and dogs and barked if other dogs to close but he dealt with it. Wow. So simple. Excellent. I wish I had seen this years ago. Send the dog outside the circle. I had a very good Rott mix and this was one thing I could never ever train him out of when he was at home. With a lot of work he was perfectly fine in public- but this was his house. He got a kick out of punking people. This would have worked. I didn't want to do methods with treats from other people etc. as he naturally did a very good job protecting. Thank you Joel.

Great video and great overall content. Thank you so much. This subject is so interesting to me because my 9 month old mixed breed is now showing some protection behaviour. I don't have a hard time correcting that when it happens in the house, because the enviroment allows me to operate in a certain way (basically what you explain in the video). The problem for me is when we are outside. He is not very reactive when walking, the real problem is when we "claim" some place: for example if we sit at a table outside a cafe' for a few minutes, or we are at the beach, then he starts to consider that place as "our place" and everyone passing by gets barked at and he lounges and all that stuff. So, if this all happens while you are sitting at a table, there is not much I can do, or at least I am not sure what to do exactly. I tried standing up and giving him a correction with the leash, making him sit and so on. That didn't really work. The dog stops when the "threat" has passed by, or, in another case, a guy sat on a table next to ours and he stopped after he realized that the guy wouldn't quit. But my aim is to not have him do that at all, of course. So... any suggestions? Thanks again for the great content.
Good video. My Rotty/Chow-Chow mix does this in the house and yard (butt-puckering barking, I don't think he would ever bite). However, come into the house or yard with a family member, he immediately wants to be friends with the stranger. This is what my dog did. Although it was on a greater scale. I couldn't snap him out of that protection state of mind, let alone prevent it from happening. He was just so scared; he even snapped a leash. I got an E-Coller and it helped keep his attention on me instead of the other people/dogs. This made him more comfortable around people because I was able to communicate that everything is fine as long as he's with me. He's not perfect at it but I've seen some major improvements. Now I say, "go say high" once I ask other people if it's okay. He now knows he can politely and safely approach with joy. He still struggles when other dogs are acting up behaviorly but we're working on it. His anxiety goes through the roof with a leash, feeling trapped. We're working on that too.

I love your videos. I was watching a video of a training session of a pit bull guarding 2 children. The trainer approached and shook the hand of each child. He spent a few minutes speaking with the children, gesturing with his hands and moving his body around before suddenly reaching out to grab one of the children. The dog attacked immediately. It was amazing to see how the dog understood the difference between the man reaching out to shake and reaching out to grab….the difference in his movements towards the children was barely perceptible to me

I read the comments, and I agree that the shaking hands helps the dog see that the person is accepted, but we are in a global pandemic right now. Many people are choosing to not get the vaccine, and travelling, so the threat still exists. How do you suggest a dog owner accept someone while maintaining the recommended 6 feet apart?
Do you do this "all day" if inside the house you tell them to go away, and then they come back and continue to bark several times over? Taking treats then continues to bark. Will nip guest if they move to quickly etc. How long do you put up with it inside the house? Until they stay and settle? Or is there a next step/consequence that isn't just avoidance (such as locking them away in a room etc)
We do this with our female gsd and new visitors. If I or my husband shake their hands, take a package or give a hug, she knows they are good and no more barking. She is just a barker, not aggressive at all.

How would you address elevator protection barking at strangers and dogs, who I don't want to shake hands with/hug? I wait way outside of the elevator doors and try to make sure it's empty, but often people are hiding in the corner, or he gets freaked out about people waiting on the other side of the elevator doors when we're leaving the elevator. I try to put him in a sit, but when we're leaving the elevator I can't do that...He only does the protection barking in our building. Out in public, he doesn't bark at and hardly notices other people/dogs. (This started when he started one of his fear periods at 6.5 months, he's 8 months old now.)
Nice to know the reason for this behavior. I managed it slightly differently - as I did not know the cause. I tell him to say hello - my indication that the person is okay. I am not going to hug workmen coming into the house. At 12 weeks old he pinned and barked at a friend who walked in unannounced. Fine with him since. My own friendliness to people visiting also impacts. If I am unsure of someone he watches them constantly. If I like someone - he brings them toys to play with.
My dog does this! He's a spoodle and quite anxious (so the vet says). Weirdly, he'll only bark at men. Correction, he'll bark at people as they really past our house. But once they come in, he usually stops. Recently, he's started barking at men visitors (totally fine with kids/teens/women).

My dog does that from the front door. I used to ignore it, but I have gotten involved and tell him to stop and put him in a sit or a down. When I used to ignore his barking at people going by my house, it was escalating and getting more aggressive and loud. I needed to curb that. He's getting better. Consistency is important.

I have a 6mo old Rott. First Rott, first dog as an adult. After watching every Caesar show, and many of yours (of not all), I do not let my dog anything if I tell him not to. He get put on his side if he disobeys. He will submit, even if he doesn’t want to. My 6mo sits and stays quite well. I can put food on the ground and he won’t eat until I tell him to do so. My in-laws came out last weekend. The wife let’s dogs steamroll her. Her dogs tell her what to do. My dog jumped at one person. Wanna guess who it was? I was pissed. He spent the rest of the day in his cell for that one. We’re (me and my 16yo daughter) getting him to the point that he’ll lay on his bed during meals and not beg my kids for scraps. He’s independent-minded like all Rotts are, so it’s a process; but it’s coming along wel. Anyways. The take away is that Rotts cannot be allowed to dominate in any way; and if they submit, you both will enjoy each other’s company far more than if they dominate.
My ex-girlfriend has a Rottweiler male and he was mildly protective when I would give the girlfriend a hug, he would be right there, but he never barked at me, even when he was eating and I was rubbing his back. At one point my ex-girlfriend said that she was going to train her dog to be more protective of her, so I had to tell her that he's your dog you can train him anyway you like but if he tries to bite me you will never see me ever again.
My badly socialized pit bull rescue is aggressive with guarding. He charges in for a fight and I've gotten him to basically ignore other dogs while we're out, so I'm pretty thrilled with that but if he's around anyone else he still has to wear his muzzle for walks because he charges in. I think he's afraid of other dogs tbh. I don't know how to explain it but he looks like he's putting on an act of aggressiveness mixed with actual aggressiveness. He knows that I don't allow that so he's meek around me though. I'd like to teach him actual socialization.
How about a Rhodesian Ridgeback that does it solely in the fenced backyard at the neighbors? We have done exactly as you taught in this video, but it has not abated. It happens when we are in the yard with him, and not.
Does this impact the dogs behavior if they are home alone and someone is trying to enter uninvited? We have a people reactive dog while at home. We would like them to welcome guests but be truly protective of the house when alone or perhaps if people enter during the night. Please address that aspect of this training.
You are not stopping the dog from protecting with this method. Notice at no point did they say the dogs barking initially was wrong. The dog is simply taught when it's time to stop. A good protection dog is one that you can control. I too have a Rottweiler. She will often raise alarm at things. But once I say thanks she quits. If not she will be taken elsewhere. Inside if it's outside. Out of the room if indoors.
Do you have a video on how to allow/praise a dog to alert bark when someone comes up to house and then use this to tell them its ok? I would like random people that come to our house to know there's a dog but it not be an issue once we tell him "thanks, now leave it."
Is there a way to help train the dog to let random ppl on the sidewalk pet them? These are people & kids I can't exactly hug nor coach. My other 2 dogs love it but my rescued street pupper does that bark/back-up thing. Maybe just the passage of time?
My new neighbour has a young beagle that barks through the fence every time I come in or out of the house. The other 2 dogs seldom bark. Got the puppy during Covid, so they know dog hasn't gotten used to people. They are trying to stop the barking. I have introduced myself and dog is a friendly little guy. Would it help if owners used this method to 'welcome' me? Is he alerting his owners? What can I do to help stop the barking. Why is he barking?
One he's a beagle bred to bark. Two if the owners allow the dog out back without supervision to make its own choices than the dog will do as dogs do, alert. It's ok to bark once to say company, it's not ok to bark incessantly. You already met the dog, know it's friendly. The dog will continue to alert bark until the owners say enough.
Great video. Been waiting for you to get on this. But what about when your dog does lunge versus back up like this dog. Same scenario like a guest coming to the house. I can't greet the guest and correct the dog at the same time. Back tie the dog? Certainly can't just tell the dog to go, because I don't trust what he's going to do being off leash. Btw, my dog is perfectly fine with people outside of the house and yard, it's just when someone new comes in.

How to create personal protection dog since puppy time ?? Should I socialize him with people or not let anyone touch it or deal with it ? But he will be aggressive in the future ? Should I socialize it with other dogs or no?
Do you want a dog you can take out into public? If so they must be socialized. Protection does not mean randomly aggressive out of control. Such dogs are liabilities not protection. You should be in charge of who you chose to interact with your dog. Yes your dog needs to be socialized with other dogs, ones you selectively pick to do so, dogs that are stable in temperament. Notice how police and military dogs can be in public? Notice they don't attack children randomly? It's because they are properly socialized and trained, thus only protect when given command to do so.
What about when they bark like this toward other dogs and people on the sidewalk? Should you ask if you can pet their dog? You can’t really ask strangers to shake hands or hug because your dog is going nuts. So is this advice only in your home or at someone else’s home but in the street you just need to get them focused on you and avoid the situation?
I think you missed much of past videos. You missed the part that out of control pups don't go out and about till they get it together. You should not have a dog out on the street that you cannot control. No you should not encourage your dog to go anywhere near strange dogs as you don't know how their dog will react, that would be a recipe for disaster. These are skills you work on at home with people and dogs you know are stable and not likely to attack you or your dog. Imagine if the stranger where to punch you, would this help your training or hinder it? Hinder. Once you have taught your dog to knock it off on cue at home you can utilize that out and about.
People dont know what guard baking is, but just have to have rotweilers. Also if a man touch a women unwanted am their dog protect you its still the dog who gets put down. Because dog laws are more strict then sexual harassment/abuse laws in our country.

My dog growls at new people and stays close to me, even trembles when the person gets closer. I always tell the person to keep their distance and allow the dog to come to you on his terms. Let him sniff you out and completely ignore him. I don't ever scold his growling because I think it's insecurity or fear more than anything else and I want him to tell me when he's nervous. Right now that's my action plan and I don't live a super social life, but I'm actually adding to it in an attempt to expose my dog to more people. Is there anything I can add to that? Or just stay the course?

I politely disagree. I think he's afraid of people. WooWooWoo barking. Backing up to be closer to his owner for his own security. Hackles up. Too many people use the excuse that "my dog is protecting me" and allow them to get away with bad behaviour. I see it all the time. The dog has poor socialization and a lack of training. He has no respect for his owner's leadership position. JMHO. No disrespect intended.
You should had the owner put a muzzle because YOU are showing hesitation because you don't trust that dog. I don't blame you but a muzzle will help you lose your fear

My dog border also trains. Her own dog is a cane corso. She's trained him with a command word, "friend," for this kind of guarding.

What do you recommend for the nightly “zoomies” accompanied by barking?
I call it “the witching hour”. A nice long walk as the sun goes down or other exercise followed by a bone is the best solution in my opinion.

My dog does this! He's a spoodle and quite anxious (so the vet says). Weirdly, he'll only bark at men.
Correction, he'll bark at people as they really past our house. But once they come in, he usually stops. Recently, he's started barking at men visitors (totally fine with kids/teens/women).
My dog will bark at anyone who comes in the house (including me the owner), or when he isnt expecting someone to come into a room and someone walks in or walks by. It is not an aggressive bark, more of a startled or protection bark. (but it is very loud and annoying) Any tips?
Can enny one tell me about, when and how i can make a my dog know the difference, between needing protection and just beeing nice to guests. I live ind Denmark and here i cant find some one to ask ( sorry fore the bad spelling)
Video idea. Any special tricks on getting dogs to curb their "alert" barking when we're outside together and people are just walking their nice dog down the street or they bark when the neighbors come home even though they've met them a million times? I seem to have to physically get close before she'll listen.
My dog does that from the front door. I used to ignore it, but I have gotten involved and tell him to stop and put him in a sit or a down. When I used to ignore his barking at people going by my house, it was escalating and getting more aggressive and loud. I needed to curb that.
He's getting better. Consistency is important.
@@annaburns5382 Ah, good to know it could escalate. Ours will also bark inside but not as much as when she's out on the deck. I'd really like her to listen to a simple "no" but instead I have to out and tell her in person.
@@sundoesshine8800 My dog won't stop unless I get up and stand in front of him. I heard Cesaer the dog whisper say that it can escalate and then I realized it was happening with my dog. You and I are in charge..they have to follow our commands. Sometime requires standing right in front of them.
I have a 6mo old Rott. First Rott, first dog as an adult. After watching every Caesar show, and many of yours (of not all), I do not let my dog anything if I tell him not to. He get put on his side if he disobeys. He will submit, even if he doesn’t want to. My 6mo sits and stays quite well. I can put food on the ground and he won’t eat until I tell him to do so.
My in-laws came out last weekend. The wife let’s dogs steamroll her. Her dogs tell her what to do. My dog jumped at one person. Wanna guess who it was? I was pissed. He spent the rest of the day in his cell for that one.
We’re (me and my 16yo daughter) getting him to the point that he’ll lay on his bed during meals and not beg my kids for scraps. He’s independent-minded like all Rotts are, so it’s a process; but it’s coming along wel.
Anyways. The take away is that Rotts cannot be allowed to dominate in any way; and if they submit, you both will enjoy each other’s company far more than if they dominate.

My ex-girlfriend has a Rottweiler male and he was mildly protective when I would give the girlfriend a hug, he would be right there, but he never barked at me, even when he was eating and I was rubbing his back.
At one point my ex-girlfriend said that she was going to train her dog to be more protective of her, so I had to tell her that he's your dog you can train him anyway you like but if he tries to bite me you will never see me ever again.

My badly socialized pit bull rescue is aggressive with guarding. He charges in for a fight and I've gotten him to basically ignore other dogs while we're out, so I'm pretty thrilled with that but if he's around anyone else he still has to wear his muzzle for walks because he charges in. I think he's afraid of other dogs tbh. I don't know how to explain it but he looks like he's putting on an act of aggressiveness mixed with actual aggressiveness. He knows that I don't allow that so he's meek around me though. I'd like to teach him actual socialization.
How about a Rhodesian Ridgeback that does it solely in the fenced backyard at the neighbors? We have done exactly as you taught in this video, but it has not abated. It happens when we are in the yard with him, and not.
Does this impact the dogs behavior if they are home alone and someone is trying to enter uninvited? We have a people reactive dog while at home. We would like them to welcome guests but be truly protective of the house when alone or perhaps if people enter during the night. Please address that aspect of this training.
You are not stopping the dog from protecting with this method. Notice at no point did they say the dogs barking initially was wrong. The dog is simply taught when it's time to stop. A good protection dog is one that you can control. I too have a Rottweiler. She will often raise alarm at things. But once I say thanks she quits. If not she will be taken elsewhere. Inside if it's outside. Out of the room if indoors.
Do you have a video on how to allow/praise a dog to alert bark when someone comes up to house and then use this to tell them its ok? I would like random people that come to our house to know there's a dog but it not be an issue once we tell him "thanks, now leave it."
Is there a way to help train the dog to let random ppl on the sidewalk pet them? These are people & kids I can't exactly hug nor coach. My other 2 dogs love it but my rescued street pupper does that bark/back-up thing. Maybe just the passage of time?
My new neighbour has a young beagle that barks through the fence every time I come in or out of the house. The other 2 dogs seldom bark. Got the puppy during Covid, so they know dog hasn't gotten used to people. They are trying to stop the barking.
I have introduced myself and dog is a friendly little guy. Would it help if owners used this method to 'welcome' me?

One he's a beagle bred to bark. Two if the owners allow the dog out back without supervision to make its own choices than the dog will do as dogs do, alert. It's ok to bark once to say company, it's not ok to bark incessantly. You already met the dog, know it's friendly. The dog will continue to alert bark until the owners say enough.
Great video. Been waiting for you to get on this. But what about when your dog does lunge versus back up like this dog. Same scenario like a guest coming to the house. I can't greet the guest and correct the dog at the same time. Back tie the dog? Certainly can't just tell the dog to go, because I don't trust what he's going to do being off leash. Btw, my dog is perfectly fine with people outside of the house and yard, it's just when someone new comes in.

@@User7688.--_ Thanks Dawna for the comment. I actually watched this one. The big difference is that my dog goes forward and not back like the one in the video. He will go red line, where I can correct 10 times, and he will need an 11th. Only at home though.

How to create personal protection dog since puppy time ?? Should I socialize him with people or not let anyone touch it or deal with it ? But he will be aggressive in the future ? Should I socialize it with other dogs or no?
Do you want a dog you can take out into public? If so they must be socialized. Protection does not mean randomly aggressive out of control. Such dogs are liabilities not protection. You should be in charge of who you chose to interact with your dog. Yes your dog needs to be socialized with other dogs, ones you selectively pick to do so, dogs that are stable in temperament. Notice how police and military dogs can be in public? Notice they don't attack children randomly? It's because they are properly socialized and trained, thus only protect when given command to do so.

What about when they bark like this toward other dogs and people on the sidewalk? Should you ask if you can pet their dog? You can’t really ask strangers to shake hands or hug because your dog is going nuts. So is this advice only in your home or at someone else’s home but in the street you just need to get them focused on you and avoid the situation?
I think you missed much of past videos. You missed the part that out of control pups don't go out and about till they get it together. You should not have a dog out on the street that you cannot control. No you should not encourage your dog to go anywhere near strange dogs as you don't know how their dog will react, that would be a recipe for disaster. These are skills you work on at home with people and dogs you know are stable and not likely to attack you or your dog. Imagine if the stranger where to punch you, would this help your training or hinder it? Hinder. Once you have taught your dog to knock it off on cue at home you can utilize that out and about.
People dont know what guard baking is, but just have to have rotweilers. Also if a man touch a women unwanted am their dog protect you its still the dog who gets put down. Because dog laws are more strict then sexual harassment/abuse laws in our country.
My dog does this when strangers run up to us out of nowhere, many times they're homeless folks that won't take a NO to petting him.
same!!!! i have so many ppl coming up to us unsolicited - because she is a Puli (dog with dreads). Even touch her without asking. And then came Corona and now i am not touchin ppl anymore or harly have interaction with strangers/friends, now she is totally confused.
i have a wirehaired dachsund and when a neighbor comes over btw he knows her very well, he still barks at her until he sees me interacting with my neighbor in a positive way so that actually works
My dog growls at new people and stays close to me, even trembles when the person gets closer. I always tell the person to keep their distance and allow the dog to come to you on his terms. Let him sniff you out and completely ignore him. I don't ever scold his growling because I think it's insecurity or fear more than anything else and I want him to tell me when he's nervous.
Right now that's my action plan and I don't live a super social life, but I'm actually adding to it in an attempt to expose my dog to more people.
Is there anything I can add to that? Or just stay the course?
Never had my dog bark at a friend if my dog doesn’t like someone I take his word for it and I don’t like them either.
I followed Joel’s instructions to a ‘T’ and now I’m facing harassment charges from my neighbor, for “Inappropriate Petting”... 🤦♂️

I politely disagree. I think he's afraid of people. WooWooWoo barking. Backing up to be closer to his owner for his own security. Hackles up. Too many people use the excuse that "my dog is protecting me" and allow them to get away with bad behaviour. I see it all the time. The dog has poor socialization and a lack of training. He has no respect for his owner's leadership position. JMHO. No disrespect intended.
You should had the owner put a muzzle because YOU are showing hesitation because you don't trust that dog. I don't blame you but a muzzle will help you lose your fear
I have to disagree. Cane corsos are way better protection dogs than any rottweiler and alot smarter too
