G1 FOUR and G1X FOUR: Differences and how they matter

  • It seems like the difference between these pedals is just the expression pedal. And physically that's pretty much it, true. But making the right decision now might save you a lot of hassle down the track.

I ordered the G1X4 but haven't received it just yet. I have the older G1XN already and appreciate it so much I had to order its big brother. Being able to assign different effects to the pedal was the deciding factor for me on both of them.

Bought the G14... bottom line you don't need the expression pedal. If you ever do, buy an external one. The one that comes with this is cheaply made, but does the trick if you want some sort of wah or volume control with your feet.

And do you know where in the chain it is?

    • @gearfacts

You don't need a volume pedal, but if you add one you'd probably put it before the G1FOUR. Many other Zoom pedals have an input to add a volume pedal, but not this one. You'd have to connect your volume pedal to the line-in.

Amazing idea for a video! Just one question: why didn't you go through the effects listed in the G1X manual as being more versatile withe the use of the pedal - those effects with the written "P" (i.e. effects for pedals only)? I really wanted to know the details about pitch shifting (that table/tables at the end of the manual.) I don't want to buy a G1 to later discover that specific pitch shift parameters (besides throwing them up and down according to the parameters of the table on the manual) are in fact indispensable...

I'm mostly interested in the pedal effects that can swell distortion and other effect parameters ... although my Boss GT-1 really does that kind of thing well (ie, set up a patch where the rocker pedal can swell distortion/gain and also decrease overall volume so it doesn't get too loud too ... it's a great thing to just organically swell distortion and other effects .... I think the Boss GT-1 or other Boss multi-effects is the most capable for fine tuning that kind of thing). Still the Zoom G1x four might be good in combination with that .... and I like the Zoom as lopper since it has one pedal to stop the loop .... many pedals have you tap the pedal twice to stop the loop and that is just soooo annoying in my opinion!

I find it a bit annoying that these new multi-effects pedals from Zoom have cabinet sims separate .... on my Zoom G1on, the cabinet sim is just a setting that is part of the amp simulation! So that there takes up one effects slot where it didn't before. Still I think I'm wanting to get the Zoom G1x Four for various improvements with knobs and buttons and layout and some new delays and such (although I'd miss the particle reverb).
