- Over the years fans have seen batman in many different shapes and forms, played by many people however, when someone steps up to the mantle of the dark knight himself, they better live up to it. Today we’ll be taking a look at infamous DC character, Azrael who shares a name with a mythological figure. In various Abrahamic religions, such as Islam and some Jewish traditions, Azrael is the name of the angel of death.
Azrael is most well-known for being Batman's failed successor who later becomes a deadly villain as he seeks down and executes escaped Arkham Asylum inmates. After Batman's back was broken by Bane in the popular Knightfall storyline, Azrael had taken over as Batman's replacement. However, that did not last long and he was forcibly removed. He was created to give the Batman title a more anti-hero edge, but now the one-time Dark Knight successor has crossed the line into full-on villainy. Today we’ll take a look at his origin story and association with the dark knight.

@@st0rm3325 the arkham games aren’t really a good indication. Batman is extremely OP in the Arkhamverse for instance. He mowed through enemies who nearly killed him in the comics like Deathstroke. He also defeated Lady Shiva who sits higher than him in the echelon of DC’s hand to hand specialists in the comics.
Let's not forget that Azrael made an appearance in Arkham City & Arkham Knight. I could see this character be part of the new Batman movie universe
I wish his storyline was longer on Arkham Knight felt short with absolute minimal story and was more like a training mission compared to the other villains missions

Gotham Knights isn't set in the same universe ad the Arkham games sadly, I personally would prefer a game based on Red Hood or Nightwing, and Azreal has a big role in it. Maybe even an Azreal game
Azrael is still a favorite since his introduction! His amazing design and stand out abilities make sure folks know why Bruce chose him to take over during Knightfall! He also shows they're other folks who can match and defeat Batman; that he isn't immune to everything! I'll never forget how he threatened to kill Bruce himself if he ever wore the cap& cowl again! ...Which Bruce had to take special training just to have a rematch!

@@benparrish672 Nah I love Azrael & Ben Reiley! They're awesome. However, the way he is currently written is terrible. Ever since that time he came back as The Jackal, he became unhinged and warped. Gone are the days of him respecting Peter, taking a Goblin Glider in the back, and really meaning something...Now he's becoming some ' newer vengeance seeker'... Like a Venom 2.0 with no weight behind it!

This video is bittersweet. I lost my best friend about 7 Yeats ago much, much too early from a heart attack at age 46. We went to our local comic store when the original Sword of Azrael mini series came out. He said " bro you gotta check out this story and the Quesada art is great!". My original copies were stolen a couple years after I bought them, but as a nod to sharing his great taste in comics and great comic art --- I picked up a copy of the trade paperback. When it first came out I was a tad bit tired of A lot of DCs stuff-----even the Batman stuff, but Azrael was an interesting addition to Batman's storyline and hope this video will peak a new generation of fans interest in a really unique character in the DC Univetse.

@@PatrickBateman3116 I think its best to be in its own canon, in my opinion it should focus on the Secret societies of Batman and how exactly they interact and be as much as a character study on Azrael and how he strugles with being basically a living weapon to secret society. (Perhaps they are in a Tenious peace or are in a Secret Eternal Game of Thrones under Batman's nose.)
@@antonkovalenko364 yup also I have an Idea about Azreal in the middle of a Secret society Civil War between the Order of Saint Dumas and realising he is actually serving the more evil version of the Organisation and that they tried to kill the Original John Paul Valley version and he is actually the Michael Lane version.
My fan cast is Oscar Issac as Michael Lane and Idris Elba as John Paul Valley.

It was canon that he tried to strike Batman down I believe, that’s why.
Only thing I didn't like an Arkham night about him is he played exactly like Batman they should give him a whole new move set and gadgets

Azrael has always had a special place in my comic favorites. I preferred him to Batman. Much like Deathstroke. Azrael, Talon & Deathstroke would be an unstoppable Trio. I hope to see it someday. Batman needs to be stopped. Just once I want the Antihero or villain to win. Bruce needs to be humbled. Have his prep time, get as ready as possible, have plans a to z, And he still Fails. I don't want to see him fail just to fail. I want an equal or better villain. Someone who just has IT. Genuinely better than Bruce in every way. It'll shake Gotham to it's core. Even joker would be like "These guys are CRAZY! HAHAHAHAAAA!.... I'm in 😈"

I know a lot of fans want to see Azrael in live action!!! I wonder if Chris Nolan and the creative team that made the Dark Knight trilogy even gave a thought to having him appear briefly!!

Imagine Azrael vs. The Red Hood (Jason Todd), Hush, or the Winter Soldier, interesting Fight/Battle.
Azrael has certainly gotten a major push in recent years with merchandise and in the comics, especially with how successful and perceived in Sean Gordon Murphy's "Batman: Curse Of The White Knight" story.

If they ever make another Suicide Squad movie, they should have Jean-Paul Valley Azrael in it. Wearing his 90s suit, the lacrosse gloves and the fire daggers that can pop in and out of the gloves. I would love to play him as a DLC character in Gotham Knights. Azrael in a open world Gotham game, that would be awesome.

In the game Arkham Knight. They should of made a dlc storyline for him...
we need more religious extremist heroes. theyre a heavily underrepresented minority group and no one fights for them socially. in fact, most religious extremists are heavily persecuted in the media and news. theyre out there trying to save the world too with their own perspectives. its nice to see diversity finally making its way into more marvel media. captain marvel was a lot of fun!

I like how in the Arkham verse, Batman exposes the Orders mind manipulation and uses his real name of Michael Lane to reach him. Then the game gives you the choice which name you choose to embody. Azreal, the enforcer of the order and angel of death, or Michael, the prince of the heavenly host, Gods right hand angel. If you choose to attack Batman he throws him in jail and becomes the antihero villain, but if Michael chooses to leave he can just go with Batman’s blessing to go after the Order, or break the sword of sin and then leave. Very cool details and I’d love to see a spin off game for him.

I think they should rewrite him as just the batman that kills. His family should die and then he finds faith. Then someone he loves dies and he snaps. He becomes a crusader, a person blessed by god. He would deem himself a necessary evil. Even with his faith, he would know he's not the hero. He would be constantly in self conflict ion between the church, batman and his belief in what must be done.
