Honda FK8 Civic Type R ECU test! Motec M142 vs Hondata FlashPro vs Stock dyno

  • While visiting GT Auto, we ran into Alex's daily driven Time Attack Honda Civic, since he's always a second ahead of our Time Attack i30N, we figured we would get a closer look.
    It just so happened GT Auto Garage were in the final stages of fitting a new Motec M142 plug and play ECU after pulling out the stock ECU that was flashed with Hondata.
    The back to back results were pretty damn impressive to say the least, with the Motec pushing more power at less boost, and cracking the 400whp figure.
    We're gonna need to step it up a notch if we hope to keep up this season that's for sure!
    Cooling system:
    PWR Intercooler
    PWR Radiator
    HKS Oil Cooler
    ECU: Motec M142 pnp with Zeitronix Ethanol Content Analyser
    Suspension: HKS Hipermax
    Stock Turbo.

    Nice, Had the M142 on my 2018 Si and i was completely impressed. Once you get a MoTeC the addiction to adding power mods to your car has no ending. It is expensive but quality always comes with a price.

      If you are modding your car, and doing aggressive stuff to it why not do it the right way and get a MoTeC

    It would be interesting to see the a80 supra on the track for a change and see how that does with a suitable suspension and wheel/tyre setup

    Mine using m150 plug in on GT86 AT.. downshift stock not working.. the shift up also so latr in very high rpm on light throttle. Any idea why ?

      Honda fan boy at heart here to I only own hondas and strictly hondas, I inhale my fa5s fumes before I go to bed and in the morning I get a hot cup of my boosted ek for breakfast lol, but you're right that shit is way over priced and getting a bit expensive for a civic

    Ideal track day weapon and would surprise a lot of "quicker" cars. Must be disappointing though that a track marketed car needs cooling mods. Looks like Hyundai (and a few other hot hatch manufacturers) did a better job there. I'd love to see this thing on track!

      Yeah all the FK8s we have encountered all get cooling issues on track.
      The i30 was quite good but it doesn't make anywhere near this power, even with mods, we're only sitting around 330whp on our i30.. we do want to do a Motec, which I feel will let us get closer to the limit, but not sure where that is yet 😳

      Street FX, sure, but Jordan’s time in WTAC ‘18 in the i30 was not bettered by any FK8 in WTAC ‘19. Plus the i30 is nowhere near the price of an FK8. I’d have either though (if either was better than a Megane III Trophy-R, ha ha). Does MoTeC do a plug & play for the i30 or would it be a full wire in job?

      Powertune in Sydney are offering a PnP Motec which is the route we plan to go down when we can afford it :)

    Ya custom tuned on hondata on a E30 blend with full bolt ons and a stock turbo I'm at 391 WHP and 394 torque... MOTEC is 7000 though I could sell my R and all its mods put 7k cash down and be in a used 2015 GTR

      Hard to compare unless on the same dyno on the same day. A used 2015 R35 is over $100k in Australia.

    Looks like the turbo is more capable than the stock i30n's turbo.

      Much. The stock i30n turbo maxes out well below this, however as a result probably gives a better response curve.

    the 390-400 whp with oem ecu and premium fuel custom tuning(not off the shelf tunes) is possible with bolt ons , i ve seen it many times on the dyno ,care to tell us from WHAT exactly will the same car benefit and make 50wp more? since the oem turbo cant go much higher? a lot of misinformation here , maybe the correct title would be HONDATA BASE REFLASH VS MOTEC FULLY CUSTOM TUNED , but then you d have to custom tune the oem ecu to the limit , i cll this test BS

    Idk I love these CTRs but they just sound terrible imho. I guess I miss the glorious wail of the NA masterpieces lol

      I have a Type R and kept my exhaust stock as I don't like the sound of them as well. Its that new single port exhaust on the head.

    I want Motec so bad 🥺 I wanna really know why the real difference in power curves between Motec and Hondata besides the explanation of just being more refined. 🤷‍♂️

      From my understanding, having proper control over boost and fuelling means it can be much more finely tuned closer to the edge. The flash system is great until a point, where you can't lean on it otherwise you're just hoping the tune isn't too aggressive.

    If the engine has the same volumetric efficiency, same fuel quantity, same ignition timing, how can a brand make more power? 😂😂😂
    Hondata is crap, motec for racing use no doubt and the original ECU it's the best for 80% of the cases.
    I have spent many hours on original ECU software, at the end passed the 400hp mark. Stable boost with no power reduce on high gears, original knock control working, air and water temperature limiter working, all the rest removed, almost like racing ECU.
