Hey Loyd! I've met you at UTMB twice now (2022 before the finish, and 2024 outside of a coffee shop). I was fortunate to get into Western States this year! Stoked to get into training and prep for this iconic race. Plenty of awesome races out here in the States. My 100 miler suggestions would be: High Lonesome, The Bear, and IMTUF.
Check out the Jigger Johnson 100 mile (or 50 mile) in the White Mountains of NH. Epic course through portions of the White Mountain National Forrest (added benefit is you can do the Pemi Loop, Presidential Traverse, and any number of other fantastic White Mountain Mtn routes while in town!)
In 2017 i was lucky to get a place with only 1 ticket. Unfortunately due to family reasons my mind wasn't on the race when i was on the starting line. I ended up doing 40 miles and quitting. A race i knew i could easily finish on another day. However, i did meet and chat with incredible people whilst there like Gordy, Dean Karnanzes, Jim Walmsley, Lucy Bartholomew, Meghan Canfield etc. The whole village at Squaw valley was an incredible experience like me and my wife had never expected. After the race i visited the rest of the course and even with the family issue it changed me and my wife forever. We came back to the UK glowing. Since then i keep applying and me and the wife will soon return and witness the magic there once again. Hopefully Loyd, me and you will bump into each other for 2026 there. It will happen for you one day mate and when you do can i just say have a good holiday there before and after the race. There is so much to see and do there and its like no place in the world.
You and Liga should do the Canyons Endurance Runs. You get some UTMB stones and Its on parts of The Western States course. Its also a qualifier for WSER 2026
@@ericandbeethoven I am doing it this April. I am hoping to qualify for the 2026 WSER but I suspect I will need every second of the 21 hours to finish.....
Gutted for you mate, but maybe think of Canyons by UTMB in April takes in some of the WSER course…thinking of it myself…really can’t wait to see your Western States video when it comes 👊
Sorry you didn’t get in mate. There’s tonnes of cool races closer to home though :) I still think Kernow is one of the greatest spots in the universe for running. Or even what about that one in Ireland that goes near the giants causeway ? Also love the singing in the out takes, I’d pay extra subscription just for that! Run4Adventure Christmas number one Heather come :)
I was hopeful there of a moment. No business 100 is a Western States 100 qualifier and an excellent race. Great race directors and probably the best aid stations I have ever seen.
Loyd, you should go to my lovely home province of British Columbia, Canada, and do the Fat Dog 120 in Manning Park, August 8 2025. The most gorgeous mountain scenery you’ll find, a qualifier for Hardrock and Western, and every bit as tough, if not more so. I did the 50 mile version in 2019 and it was a life-changer. Like you, I tried and missed the WS ballot this year, but to be honest, I would have declined a place, given the current political situation in the US. Gary Robbins Coast Mountain Trail Running also has some super races near Vancouver. Or there is Quebec Mega Trail in eastern Canada, a part of the World Trail Majors, with SDW 100 as a sister race. Go North!! 😊😃
The Superior 100 is truly incredible in northern MN. The nicest volunteers in the country on what is such a sneakily technical and tough 100 mikes (21,000ft and 38 hour cut-off)
Sorry for you mate. I’ve been trying to get into UTMB for like 7 years now, Western States 2 years. Getting used to not getting haha. Hopefully next time around man. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Was lucky enough to get into UTMB in 2013 first time of trying. Been trying western States for 11 years, with a one year gap in between and still no joy, lots of other great races though which have kept me entertained,It would be amazing though to get into WS.
you can throw your name in the hat for leadville 100. lottery submissions are being taken until 12/15 I believe. that, or do their Silver Rush 50, a fantastic race.
I’m not sure I want the disappointment of another failed race ballot Matt 😂 I would like to run Leadville at some point though. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
Well there is an amazing race some call Hardrock North, whcih is Fatdog 120 in British Columbia, Canada. Check it out. Finished it once its amazing !!!!
Hey. Not America but little old New Zealand just launched a new ultra this year. The first one was just run last weekend. The Spectacle. My husband ran his first ever 100miler and he said it was stunning. Think it would make an epic video for you.
We’d love to come over to New Zealand and run, it’s definitely on our bucket list. Unfortunately it’s so far to travel and we really don’t have the budget for it yet but one day hopefully 🙂 Say well done to your husband for completing his first 100 miler! 👌💪
thanks for the reply. If you ever make it out here we would be happy to help crew or pace! Understand the cost we are heading out to the UK next year for me to do my first marathon in my home town! Keep up the great content and hope to see you out in NZ one day
Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run. They have 50K, 100K and 100 miles. The 100k is a Western States Qualifier but need to finish sub 20 hrs. It would give you a taste of the area of Western States also.
Great video mate, as always. To be honest i thought you got your slot and you were playing with us!!🙃 Keep on trying mate! Quick question: what do you like most about Krupicka that you consider him as "your hero" ? Thanks again mate and greetings from Greece!
I wish that was the case! 🙂 I really like the way Anton lives his life and how he goes about his running, everything is simplified. He’s running UTMB again next year, which is very exciting 🙂
