Love your down to earth way off narrating and the interesting information offcourse. A lot of narrators of nature shows, talk like there is something sensational going on , or the music is over dramatic or weird sound effects are added . A good show does not need this. Nature is awesome as it is and does not need embellishments and you Dr. Ann are a star in narrating, Greetings from a new fan, greetings from the Netherlands!
He or one of her parents was also the one who told her to sit on the edge. You can see her crying in the full video and scared when it pops its head out of the water while someone is also tossing it food. Then one of them tells her to sit there in the edge. She's very hesitant and only does it because she's told to...crying the whole time
I blame water parks for the sea lion bit, they make sea lions popping their heads off water seem so cute, basically desensitize people on how potentially dangerous that is. They are called sea LIONS for a reason.
... they're called sea lions for very aesthetic reasons, and nothing to do with temperament they have loud roars and male sea lions have manes, the stellar, or northern european sealion males actually grow full manes of fur around their necks and bellies people should just know that sea lions, seals and walruses are all kinda assholes anyway and will maim and kill you for not offering enough fish to their lord and savior... themselves
I wouldn’t say that, most people know that, but the people are getting stupider every year since social media is a thing and I would give this the fault and not the water parks. I remembered when I was a kid, they always told us at the water parks about the dangers of these animals. People today just think everything is harmless, because if it’s not it would get banned, or canceled… That’s how people think in the world of social media and also by seeing these animals on social media where they never talk about the dangers, is the real issue how the get labeled as harmless
The sea lion that pulled the girl into the walk happened where I live and that whole area there is massive signs saying “don’t feed the sea lions”. So stupid to let your kid sit there like that!
I was thinking the very same thing. Ppl do very stupid things just a few years back when the parents was walking thru a Disney resort park(I think)near the water and there was signs warning ppl not to let small children or pets run around there. A family was doing just that and their 3 yr old son was snatched up by a croc who came running up on the sand? The dad went into the water after the croc but came back. I believe they found the little boy's body awhile later. It's hard to feel sorry for parents when they do dumb things like that? I do of course feel heartbroken for the child.
I’m from Wyoming. I’ve been to Yellowstone countless times. When you entry the park you pass signs in every language telling to stay a certain distance from bison, moose and bears. They hand you a warning that tells you. The ranger at the gate tells you. There are signs all throughout, in many languages. Still people get gored or tore up, every year.
My thought was this: don’t tease animals with food. Frankly, if you tease ME with food, I’ll probably bite you eventually- by accident, of course😏! The sea lion didn’t look particularly aggressive to me- he don’t even stick around after yanking her in- he could have grabbed her and taken off. It was more like an “FU I’m out”, kind of thing.
I love how casual she is about the shark biting the side of the shark cage. When I found this video I expected it would be focused on how deadly the animal is but it was actually very pleasant.
I once saw a fisherman slap a sea lion as hard as he could to try prevent it stealing a fish from him - the sea lion didn't even seem to notice. It got the fish.
The fisherman should feel thankful that the sea lion didn't get him as well. Pass him a message from me: 'stop being such a miser, you *** (- use the word of your choice here)' 😂
It amazes me how cruelly some people treat an octopus. As said below they are intelligent. There is even a video of one that brought a gift to a woman that had saved it the day before. It "waved" and put a stone on her shoe and then left and walked back to the sea.
It's absolutely sickening how many sharks are killed each year. The people that continue to kill sharks for their fins and to use for medicinal purposes have to stop. These people know that their actions are hurting the shark population and they don't care. It blows my mind how selfish these people are.
China is one of the worst countries in the world if not THE worst country for decimating sharks and many many other species around the world. Its that "traditional medicine" bullcrap. Animal cruelty, and barbaric disregard for our animal friends is rampant in China and lots of third world countries as well....😢
And it’s downright evil… they shark can’t do anything but descend and DROWNED… incredibly cruel. Even though I’m extremely terrified of them I wouldn’t wish that fate on anything or anyone.
If you eat fish you are part of the problem. Most sharks die as unintended by-catch drowned in massive commercial nets and thrown overboard. Watch Seaspiracy... and weep.
Same. People laugh when I tell them I refuse to swim in the ocean but I grew up watching Shark Week and I don’t want to be featured on it. It’s their home, not mine.
Our local aquarium several years ago noticed one of the school of fish was getting smaller and smaller. Turns out the octopus had memorized the guard schedules, figured out how to unlock his own tank, crawl across the aquarium to this other tank, unlock it, crawl inside, eat several fish and go back to his tank without so much as a hinge left open 😂 It took WEEKS to figure it out and I think it was because someone finally decided to check the cameras.
I love her. Also something to think about with sharks: they don't have hands; the bump and bite is a test to see what you are and not a true 'attack'. Sharks can do a lot more damage than their test nibbles usually do.
My brush with an octopus: it was dark red angry after a lot of divers had photographed it, then changed to sand colour and carried on minding its business. Quite impressive to see that in real life. It sodded off into a crevice and my dive-buddy thought it was a good idea to try to get it out of the cave by poking around with his snorkel. Five of six tentacles came shooting out and took the snorkel away. We could see the octopus sitting in the cave, examining its new booty, the sort of snorkel with a transparent mouthpiece, so you could see the tentacles fingering around in it. Eventually it got bored and threw it out again. The dangerous bit was me running out of air later in the dive because I had laughed so hard.
Firstly Dr Anne is hysterical and educational I need her to be my professor 🤣 secondly as soon as I knew the little girl was OK my attention immediately went to the sunglasses slowly sinking away 😩🤣
Love this lady She just speaks the truth and no sugar coat I love it when people that do not respect animals, get what they deserve When I see people eating a live,beautiful, thinking,feeling and alive octopus it's very satisfying to see her in pain and scared to death now she knows how it feels

Back then it was necessary for us to eat meat to survive, just as it is necessary for animals to rape other animals in order for their species to survive. But as we evolved, we discovered agriculture, and many other food sources that are often far healthier than meat. Your point is that it's okay for geese to rape because it's necessary for their survival. But this cannot be applied to human meat eating, at least not anymore. It is unnecessary for us to kill and eat animals at all, and at least at the magnitudes that we do. Therefore, as it is unnecessary, it is morally wrong. This is using your own argument.

Also, to say that morality only extends to our own species is an incredibly human exceptionalist (also arrogant) thing to say. What about pets? What about the environment? People already extend morality to animals, talking about humane treatment, animal abuse, and free range etc. The question is why we cherry pick what we accept as moral behaviour. Why should we as (intelligent and therefore morally responsible) human beings cause unnecessary harm to the environment whilst causing unnecessary suffering to other living things. I would say we have a responsibility as intelligent living beings, to extend compassion to other living beings. Otherwise it's just speciesist, and we can extend that logic to extremes. For example, why should I care about whether you live or die? I don't know you, you're not in my clan? Using your logic, I shouldn't care. Also racism can be easily defended using your logic.
Yep, this is the third in a row I've watched with this Dr. I'm subbing for sure.. She's fun and I want to learn from her because of the way she teaches.. These are the types of teachers that should be in class, I'd never want to leave!!
Leopard seals are some of the greatest carnivorous predators and perhaps the scariest looking seal in the world. In my opinion of course. Love your stuff!!
@@djquinn11 I know that is the right thing to do and I hope that I would do it. I just want to acknowledge that it is so often men who do these incredibly brave things. Women are brave in many ways e.g. giving birth, but I just want to acknowledge the frequent courage of men.
I feel sea lions are more like a very large fox but forever in their younger years when they're super curious and really daring. You should think similarly about being within biting distance of one
Dr. Ann makes this content so fascinating, interesting, and very enjoyable. I’m not a big animal person but I like learning about wildlife every now and then. It’s amazing what this life can offer, ya know?

octopuses are definitely among the coolest, smartest and most amazing animals there are.🐙 Also scary at times, but usually humans asked for it when they attack.
I've just discovered Dr. Ann Jones and fell in love with how she explains and presents the animal world. Attenborough you've got competition!! hahahahaha ... Loved the video and it reinforced my believe that we as a species are extremely stupid (most of the time): the blue ringed octopus baiting was just plain stupid and idiotic!! I have horribly afraid of hippos, even though I've never been near one. Except for one baby pygmy hippo at the Chicago Shedd Aquarium. She was adorable yet still weighed more than me. Also I highly recommend ZFrank's Hippos walking backwards video. It's surprisingly entertaining.
I find it vile that the practice of catching sharks only to lop off their fins and toss them back into the ocean alive & finless for a delicacy soup is still allowed to go on. I’m aware that it would be nearly impossible to regulate or monitor something like this given the vastness of the ocean.

Some fun trivia about hippos... many Egyptologists believe King Tut was killed by a hippo. He was depicted as a brave hunter that loved to go after bigger and bigger game, and hippos have been documented in paintings as one of his targets. Due to the crush damage to his heart tissue and ribs they found in his preserved remains, they believe he got too overzealous during a hunt and a hippo bit down on his chest, crushing his ribs and heart, killing him. They believe this because if he was attacked by a crocodile or other predator with teeth designed for tearing chunks of meat off a carcas, it would have taken a bite and many more pieces of his body would be missing. In reality, the tissue and bone were crushed but still mostly intact, showing the animal that attacked him had no desire to actually eat what it caught, which is exactly what a herbivore such as a hippo would do when defending itself. Also, Egyptians respected the ferocity of hippos, espcially mother hippos with young calves, so much so that Taweret, the proterctive goddess of childbirth, motherhood, and fertility, was depicted as a hippo (or mostly hippo) in paintings and carvings.

Please give all wildlife space. It makes me angry when people try to get as close as possible to take a picture. Then act surprised and shocked the animal attacks.
I had my sweet 16th birthday at the beach. My friends and I were in the water, when suddenly they screamed "SHARK, SHARK" and ran, leaving me behind. Everyone else at the beach screamed and ran. My dad, a former lifeguard, had taught me that if there's a shark, don't splash around as they'll see you as prey, so I stayed as still as possible. Suddenly, something rough rubbed against my leg. I looked down, and there were sharks swimming all around me. I. Didn't. Move. Even as the waves smashed into me over and over, I tried my hardest to stay as motionless as I possibly could. I apparently had gone very pale, and the lifeguard on duty noticed. He came over and managed to shoo them away, guiding me safely back out of the water and to my friends who were all crying on the beach. My brother told me it must have been nurse sharks and assured me that they are very gentle, he's even pet them in the wild. He's a scuba instructor, so I assumed he must be right. Years later, I was telling this story when someone told me, "Nurse sharks aren't in that area of the ocean. Tiger sharks are, and they can be aggressive." I asked my brother, who admitted he knew it must have been a tiger shark but didn't want to scare me, since he wanted to nurture my love for the ocean. I ended up studying oceanography in college, so I guess that worked, but I still have a phobia for being in opaque water. If I can't see my toes, I can't handle it. I prefer to stay on the boat.
So if an octopus decides to move across the seabed, does it experience that movement in the first person as we would, or does it experience it more like an expert carriage driver ? I mean, does it go there, or does it issue commands and get carried there ?

Huge ships catch thousands of sharks, they cut off the fins, then throw the still live sharks BACK in the ocean because all they want are the fins. And rhinos are nearing extinction because poachers catch them, cut off their horns then leave the entire rest of body to rot, all because some cultures think the horns have medicinal or aphrodisiac properties. Now, are those traditions that should be continued?
It drives me crazy when people go into an animal's territory, provoke it with their behaviours and then are shocked when they get attacked. They're just trying to protect and feed themselves

Cape Town, South Africa we have a fabulous Shark Spotters initiative....a combination of lookouts, radio, sirens and flags all along our beaches. Very successful!! The recent Orca activity in the bay the last few years have made the GW's flee....Orcas like shark liver and the whites are no match for them....Did a cage dive at Seal Island years ago and was blessed to see these ancient beauties in flight...we hope for their return. ( made famous as air jaws "flying great whites" a new behavior documented by Chris Fallows years back. Incredible creatures all! Thank you for the nerdy fabulous insight into all these creatures!
It’s a bit ironic that the young girl was dragged into the water considering she wasn’t even the one feeding it. There was another family beside them that kept throwing the food to feed the sea lions. Thankfully though, her grandpa was quick to act and get her to safety! This is just one of many reasons why you shouldn’t feed wild animals! I’m just glad that no one got hurt because that could have ended differently!
I'm from the UK & I've noticed Aussies can explain things in detail better than most people. I think I would be compatible with the Aussie educational system!😊

I believe that one of the closest relatives to seals and sea lions are bears. So technically, sea bear would be a better description than sea dog.

I love her. Also something to think about with sharks: they don't have hands; the bump and bite is a test to see what you are and not a true 'attack'. Sharks can do a lot more damage than their test nibbles usually do.

My brush with an octopus: it was dark red angry after a lot of divers had photographed it, then changed to sand colour and carried on minding its business. Quite impressive to see that in real life. It sodded off into a crevice and my dive-buddy thought it was a good idea to try to get it out of the cave by poking around with his snorkel. Five of six tentacles came shooting out and took the snorkel away. We could see the octopus sitting in the cave, examining its new booty, the sort of snorkel with a transparent mouthpiece, so you could see the tentacles fingering around in it. Eventually it got bored and threw it out again. The dangerous bit was me running out of air later in the dive because I had laughed so hard.

I have horribly afraid of hippos, even though I've never been near one. Except for one baby pygmy hippo at the Chicago Shedd Aquarium. She was adorable yet still weighed more than me. Also I highly recommend ZFrank's Hippos walking backwards video. It's surprisingly entertaining.

I find it vile that the practice of catching sharks only to lop off their fins and toss them back into the ocean alive & finless for a delicacy soup is still allowed to go on. I’m aware that it would be nearly impossible to regulate or monitor something like this given the vastness of the ocean.

Dr. Ann- I’ve just recently watched the Netflix documentary” MY OCTOPUS TEACHER”. It was absolutely brilliant
here from canada! I remember that day that it pulled the girl in the water. was all over social media. MY fiancé and I walks down there a lot. unfortunately they have a boats selling fish ect. there and people like to also try and feed animals in the water.

Some fun trivia about hippos... many Egyptologists believe King Tut was killed by a hippo. He was depicted as a brave hunter that loved to go after bigger and bigger game, and hippos have been documented in paintings as one of his targets. Due to the crush damage to his heart tissue and ribs they found in his preserved remains, they believe he got too overzealous during a hunt and a hippo bit down on his chest, crushing his ribs and heart, killing him. They believe this because if he was attacked by a crocodile or other predator with teeth designed for tearing chunks of meat off a carcas, it would have taken a bite and many more pieces of his body would be missing. In reality, the tissue and bone were crushed but still mostly intact, showing the animal that attacked him had no desire to actually eat what it caught, which is exactly what a herbivore such as a hippo would do when defending itself. Also, Egyptians respected the ferocity of hippos, espcially mother hippos with young calves, so much so that Taweret, the proterctive goddess of childbirth, motherhood, and fertility, was depicted as a hippo (or mostly hippo) in paintings and carvings.

I had my sweet 16th birthday at the beach. My friends and I were in the water, when suddenly they screamed "SHARK, SHARK" and ran, leaving me behind. Everyone else at the beach screamed and ran. My dad, a former lifeguard, had taught me that if there's a shark, don't splash around as they'll see you as prey, so I stayed as still as possible. Suddenly, something rough rubbed against my leg. I looked down, and there were sharks swimming all around me.
I. Didn't. Move. Even as the waves smashed into me over and over, I tried my hardest to stay as motionless as I possibly could. I apparently had gone very pale, and the lifeguard on duty noticed. He came over and managed to shoo them away, guiding me safely back out of the water and to my friends who were all crying on the beach.
My brother told me it must have been nurse sharks and assured me that they are very gentle, he's even pet them in the wild. He's a scuba instructor, so I assumed he must be right.
Years later, I was telling this story when someone told me, "Nurse sharks aren't in that area of the ocean. Tiger sharks are, and they can be aggressive." I asked my brother, who admitted he knew it must have been a tiger shark but didn't want to scare me, since he wanted to nurture my love for the ocean.
I ended up studying oceanography in college, so I guess that worked, but I still have a phobia for being in opaque water. If I can't see my toes, I can't handle it. I prefer to stay on the boat.
So if an octopus decides to move across the seabed, does it experience that movement in the first person as we would, or does it experience it more like an expert carriage driver ? I mean, does it go there, or does it issue commands and get carried there ?

Huge ships catch thousands of sharks, they cut off the fins, then throw the still live sharks BACK in the ocean because all they want are the fins.
And rhinos are nearing extinction because poachers catch them, cut off their horns then leave the entire rest of body to rot, all because some cultures think the horns have medicinal or aphrodisiac properties. Now, are those traditions that should be continued?

Those guys are lucky, blue ring octopis don't enjoy biting people. They will put up with alot before they finally resort to their venom.

Cape Town, South Africa we have a fabulous Shark Spotters initiative....a combination of lookouts, radio, sirens and flags all along our beaches. Very successful!!
The recent Orca activity in the bay the last few years have made the GW's flee....Orcas like shark liver and the whites are no match for them....Did a cage dive at Seal Island years ago and was blessed to see these ancient beauties in flight...we hope for their return. ( made famous as air jaws "flying great whites" a new behavior documented by Chris Fallows years back. Incredible creatures all! Thank you for the nerdy fabulous insight into all these creatures!

It’s a bit ironic that the young girl was dragged into the water considering she wasn’t even the one feeding it. There was another family beside them that kept throwing the food to feed the sea lions. Thankfully though, her grandpa was quick to act and get her to safety! This is just one of many reasons why you shouldn’t feed wild animals! I’m just glad that no one got hurt because that could have ended differently!
