Loved this years line up, 10 stunning cars. It's a shame about the Z06, it's a solid V8 track monster & it should have placed higher (in my own opinion), I honestly thought the Cayman GT4 was going to win considering it's mostly been Porsche's that win this test over the past few years but the AMG GT-S truly deserves it, it's wicked, a true German hot rod. Can't wait to see what next year has in store, I'll be keeping an eye out for the new Ford GT :)

Im here cos I just bought a 2015 Miata Club Edition yesterday and Im blown away. 6 speed manual and blows doors. Well, atleast you felt like you just blew doors from a start and you look down and your doing 50. Im not wealthy and after watching this I feel like I got the best deal in the world. It prolly took 2nd in this if they had called it.

I've had 3 MX5s. I currently have a third gen. (NC). I am no longer envious of any overpriced, pretentious, super-duper car I see on the road. I'm convinced that I have one of the most fun cars you can drive. I can do crazy stuff with the tail end at speeds less than 15 MPH.
I recommend good summer tires (BF Goodrich G-Sport Comp 2) and an aggressive alignment. You think you are having fun now? wait until you get more comfortable, confident, and competent.

Thanks for all the personalized replies to the comments, Jonny - it goes a long way for your subscribers and viewers. Shame the Corvette was sick, would've loved to have seen it at least pull a quick lap with Randy behind the wheel.
It seems a lot of people really enjoy this series, even if opinions differ. I'm sure you guys are up to your necks in content to push out the door and don't need any suggestions, but I think a similar series with older cars would be interesring, as well! Best driver's car of 2005? 1995? 1985? (what could you find in good condition!?)
Anyway, thanks for the hard work you guys put into this, was great to see and fun to watch, regardless of agreement on first place.

It's the only thing that annoys me about the BDC series that really annoys me. As much as I appreciate any great driving supercar, knowing that a $300k Ferrari is the best driving car doesn't really do me any good as I (along with 99% of everyone else) will never be able to afford one.
So I think having a Best Drivers Car for $20k, $30k, etc would be really cool. You could consider new and good condition used cars at each price point. Obviously the used market is a can of worms, but it could make for an interesting show and comments debate.

i too thought the miata would win since its the pure sports car and the underdog. was sure they wound't give it to the super expensive supercar but what do you know.
They really should have put some more weight on the price difference... soft suspension... Well when you got 140k or so dollars up to the next contender replacing the shocks with something stiffer won't be an issue. It's the car 99% of the audience even has a chance of buying.
I'm getting the new miata 2.0 club edition delivered next month, it's on the ship, the first thing i'll do is to upgrade the suspension. This is the only car i can afford because is my country there is a 110% tax on cars so i'm paying approximately 60,000 $. I opted for the BBS alloys, Brembo front brakes and the aero kit.
I could tell from here that the Merc coupe was exquisite. When Randy stepped out I pretty much knew he was gonna say something like 'best car ever.'

How are you enjoying the mx 5 so far?
acceleration is good for me. Indeed lots of fun. drive it every day to work. I especially like the bose sound system. gas consumption is good. with my prior car (volvo c70) I have to spend 28$ per week for gas. Now about $18 per week.
The only thing I am still getting use to is the steering wheel is a little stick... not sure whether it is because rear-wheel-drive.
Kai Bi I'm also considering buying the mx 5. Would you say the highest trim is worth buying ? Is there a huge difference between the normal sound system and the Bose system?
Mine is Grand Touring. I saw in other video that Club is even worth buying. It should also have Bose. It's worth to have a look.

Wesley Green cost is no issue in this test. They test which car is the best ti drive. Not fastest, because if that was the case, miata would get dead last. Cost has nothing to do with the test.

VW and Mazda chose to send these cars, Motortrend accepted them because thats how they run the test as explained in the video. And guess what? The miata was one of the best drivers cars and that made it a valid entry. They even commended Golf on its impressive performance. The point is that the price isn't was defines a drivers car, its how good it is.

+Erek K I guess you can technically say they do that. But all they really do is put the ones with the best 1/4 mile times in the center. But they still actually race the cars side by side.

+gr743g43ggfb4 If they could provide press cars that aren't broken, that'd help - and the press cars should be very well looked after because they know they'll be abused. If they can't make the press cars (Effectively the halo cars) reliable, that does *not* bode well for someone who buys a 'Vette and is considering tracking it, given that tracking it will likely invalidate the warranty in most countries.
Putting it last was harsh, but not unjustified - but it's definitely a shame as it seems the 'Vette is competitive in all manners with the rest of the worlds competition these days (it never used to get lauded for it's handling and refinement in the European press - these days it's well regarded in those respects for the most part) and it'd be really interesting to see how it compared to the AMG GTS 'in anger'.
Ah well.

I was really disappointed with this film for the most part. Up until the top three cars at the end, there wasn't a whole lot of detail in how the cars behaved and how the cars made the drivers feel. Just a brief statement on the car as a whole. It was the same with Randy Pobst on the racetrack...I am not faulting the people who spoke in this film, however. The editors of this video and/or the people who choreographed what to film and say may be at fault. The reason I bring this up is because the previous two years' films for BDC were utterly fantastic and I just felt a bit disappointed when I watched this. That being said, Motor Trend still picked the car I would have chosen. It's not my favorite car in the world but I can't deny the smiles and feelings that the GT-S gives you. Just wish I could have received a little more detail.

MX-5 is all about cornering.
A concept very few understand, hence their surprise about the little roadster.
The miata had tons of body roll. Suspension is too soft. Cornering is not it's best attribute.
I agree Nord IMHO if it won world car of the year and world car design of the year 2016 in my book its fantastic and for the price up against motors costing double the amount is amazing.
I like it so much I've just bought one, grin factor is off the scale although I will say the most fun I have had in a car is in a Morgan three wheeler but they really are totally impractical and not very good value for money.
Spend $2k on a full Öhlins Road and Track coilover setup, and it rides better around town, and transforms the car on track. You probably loose 50% of the body roll. I know this test is about fully stock cars, but for the price of the miata, most people can afford a mod or two. Both the porsche and amg has adaptive dampers so they behave completely different between the normal mode and track modes.

The Miata is oh so close . Just needs a little bit more . Not much just a little. Little more meat on the tires. A little more horsepower and just a little stiffer suspension . doesn't even need to be 200 hp at 190 I think this thing would be a beast.

It's funny how in the 80's, as I became of driving age, I lamented missing the 60's era muscle car. Quite honestly, we are currently seeing some of the most exciting automobiles to ever been produced. A true golden age of motoring exists today.

Please keep doing this every year. It is a great way to compare...run them all at Laguna Seca. Gives a lot of us occasional weekend HPDE drivers a nice benchmark.
I've owned a couple of sports cars from Lotus and Porsche. I have an NA mint MX5 and in two days I will have a brand new ND delivered from Pacific Mazda. I find the push for Mercedes was a bit silly from that one guy. I have a dual clutch, torque, etc etc... To me this isn't driving. Driving is the engagement of man and machine which is what Mazda achieved with the MX5. I'm really excited for my new ND. Tuesday at 1615, stay tuned.

Pretty much every single journalist in the car industry is biased bribed. They are flown over sea taken to race tracks in limos, stay in luxurious hotels on the expense of the manufacturer. They are fed and given expensive bottles of wine. They get to drive this cars. It's not just motor trend is biased everyone is. So I suggest taking everything given to you by every cat journalist with a grain of salt....a big one at that

+Homicidium There are other cars as for example the megane RS, rs3 sportback, focus rs, z4, slk and even a mini cooper s that could run easily lower times at the nordschleife than the mx-5. Even without any modifications of course. What I am trying to say is that the mx-5 is a great car for the price it has but it is so fucking basic compared to all these cars. There is no reason for a comparison between them. Plus to me it seemed like 15 out of 30 minutes of this video were dedicated about the miata

I agree that it would not deserve the best drivers car award and would be hard to live with from a day to day basis. But i really would like to know what its lap time would have been if running at it optimal ability. Awesome to see a corvette running at the same level as some of the fastest cars in the world. Other than this lemon its a testament to GM upping the bar.

What a turd this new Z06 is turning out to be huh? GM has been surprising me lately with how good their performance cars have been, but this Z06 makes me think they're back to their old tricks again. Now that they're safely out of trouble from the last government bailout and bankruptcy, they'll resume business as usual. Selling death traps that break down constantly.

Don't get me wrong its indeed disappointing that the Z06 had (probably sensor) issues for this, but the test mule Z06 had probably seen more track time than any of the other cars here. So drawing the above conclusion about unreliable death traps (which was actually never true at all) is abductive reasoning at best.

Not at all. During the worst of the GM years, (gasp!) the late 70's-80's, I think most European imports were worse for reliability (that's not a statement of fact, it's an opinion based on my personal experience with the cars). I had some experiences with GM full size cars back then that led me to believe that they were unsafe and unreliable, which isn't contested by many. That's why I was surprised about their recent move toward quality, and why I'm disappointed to see something that's giving hints of a move back to that problematic state.
The Z06 is supposed to be the pinnacle of what GM has to offer for performance machinery. You should be able to beat the snot out of such a car for at least 30k before you have any problems out of them like we're seeing with these test mules. I know the company is capable of building something that will do that, because they recently have with the ZR1, ZL1, old Z06 and Z28, they just didn't with this car it seems.
+Bill Bradsky Actually it seems the supercharger on track is known to have some cooling problems. You can't really beat laws of thermodynamics... it's a sports car, but not a race car that's specifically designed around tracking. The chassis seems to be designed around NA motor, so they'd have to redesign it more to give it adequate cooling.

I agree with what you're saying, but that was the old GM way of doing things, and when you add up all the little ways in which they did this "good enough" engineering, it ended up literally being a death trap. I lived in a town that had a GM plant, so EVERYBODY had GM cars in their driveways. I knew 3 different people with full size GM cars that spontaneously combusted, all for different reasons (1. air injection pump fire, 2. alternator bearing failure/engine fire, 3. fuse block melted and caused electrical fire). Even back then, the key could be removed from the ignition after a few thousand miles without turning switch off, and that problem was there in all of them for more than a decade. The window cranks would fail, handles would fall off, engines would blow smoke after like 80k, auto transmissions would burn up, etc. It was a constant chore chasing repairs around in circles on those. If they keep doing stuff like this Z06 cooling problem, they'll regain their old reputation and be bankrupt even quicker than last time. Competition is a lot more fierce these days.
+Bill Bradsky from what I know, people on corvette forum who work at/own shops have tested z06's and say the ecu is pulling timing even when the temps are fine and no sensors have been triggered. I really want to love the new z06 but it's staring to look very suspicious

I purchased the Mazda ND with the GT trim. Immediately I took them Bridgestone's tires off and replaced them with Continental ExtremeContact DW! The ride and handling is a huge difference in this Florida hot and wet weather. I'm very impressed with the MX-5 Miata performance on this video but didn't think it will make the TOP FIVE with the competition it was up against.. Well done Mazda!

Non of the M series can match what the ATSV at all. Cadillacs got better handling, easier on the racetrack and obviously those seats are incredible. And BMW has what inlines with fake intake noise the ought the cabin? Come on man, it's about the best drivers car and nothing BMW got is going to get into this list. Everything they got is similar to a Porsche but the Porsche is just a thousand times better. And truth be told, they're not inventing anything special. And the M2 wasn't out yet at the time of this video. And the M4 is old compare to these cars here. Sure it's 2015 but it's still the same as it was 3 years ago.

I feel it's a bit as if you buy a Maserati. It's not the pinnacle of engineering, but it's a certain style for people to associate themselves with and that's fine.

I 100% think Cayman came in 2nd. While the gearing is indeed annoying as shit and such a dumb oversight by Porsche, everything about the car is objectively better than the Miata. Even accounting for price difference. GT4 is just packed with new stuff in terms of Cayman line progression while Miata changed looks, weight, balance but at the final result of nothing too spectacular. Imo, Miata gives you the base chassis, lots of potential for tuning.

Did you read their review? They literally said the gt4 had way to much understeer and they called the amg gts perfect. You can't exactly beat perfection.
Nate Eintracht also be reminded that these guys drove SOOOOOOooooooooooo many cars that they are really picking not nit picky things sometimes that are just preference. I drove Miata, Cayman gt4 (and cayman gts), and amg gts (but not this year's so maybe that matters). the gt4 is by far the most fun and engaging one. Understeer can easily be fix with some tuning and it will be a hella fun experience (or just an anti roll bar prob easy peasy fixed right off). not to mention it doest even understeer that much. just a little and very cntorllable. I'm starting to think in MotroTrend's testing their tires might have been worn more than the others without them noticing. Tires is first thing that determines understeer (or really any factor of a car comes to tires first)
They tried retuning it but still understeered way too much at the limit. Anyway, they reviewed thousands of cars, I think we should respect their opinion as it is clearly a very well informed one. I for one agree with their choice.
these rankings should be taken with a grain of salt. forget that there are so many cars not included.... the fact that they ranked the Miata 3rd and the Corvette 9th says everything. I'm not even a big fan of the Corvette, but the Miata making it even in your top 40 is a joke.
I'm not a big fan of the Miata n will never buy one. As far as the Z06,it goes to show u how crappy Gm cars are. I love the look of the convertible but it's unreliable n that's the bottom line. GM is a dead brand.

Its pretty clear that these motortrend guys are very bias. They shit on the Lexus and even the Bentley but the Miata which clearly has more flaws, they couldn't even make up half the criticisms. The Miata handles like crap and doesn't have turbo, yet they picked it as the top 2-3 car to drive. Lol. This ranking is a joke for real. Anyone who takes it seriously is a fool.

yes the ranking is based on "most fun to drive". You can't tell me if someone gave you the oppurtonity to drive a car for just 10mins that you would pick a Miata over a Z06, RCF, ATS-V, C63, GT3-R Continental. These guys are just a bunch of bafoons that could say a mini cooper is better than a Koenigsegg One:1 and you guys would eat it up. And yes they should ask me to do the list for next year, it would be a million times more accurate than this joke list.
