    Thanks for the vigorous defense of my credentials, Tim- but you played too well in this game!
    I think this video may come in useful for my appeal to get bumped back to 4.5, lol.

      I feel like USTA was way more aggressive in bumping on up players this past year (2017). Like if you had a ridiculous record in your single's season, you got bumped up. I saw way more people bumped up than the previous year; I even saw someone at SF Tennis Bay Club go from 3.5c to 4.5c... didn't think that was possible to jump a whole point!

    • @formulaicsounds
      @formulaicsounds 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      minhluu20 dude you were so tough to deal with that windy day in downtown LA last spring. You're for sure a 4.5 tho haha. Let's play again

      This just goes to show how much you've improved. Also, depends on your opponent. If allowed to rally I think you're happy to do so.
      Minh, your opponent yesterday brought it out of you. Made you go for stuff. Would've been a great one to film! Not for usta appeal, though. Haha you were looking like Medvedev out there :)

    I can see how he wins a lot of matches at 4.5. Lots of consistency, great top spin, and that slice. Those slices will throw off a lot of baseline players and his style of play is a problem if you don't attack the net, cause you will get tired. Minh's style of play forces errors. In USTA if he was playing a lot of 2nd singles, he would win most matches.

  • @stefanrahovean
    @stefanrahovean 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Great match! I'm a USTA coach at the national tennis center in NYC and I gotta say that Minh's forehand drive is about the most extreme grip that I've seen and I deal with lots of unorthodox players all the time :) At first I thought that he was hitting the Gasquet forehand since the shoulder turn is very similar, but then I realized that he's actually making contact with the other side of the racquet (I had to watch it at 0.25x speed) Even more interesting is the fact that he uses the same grip to hit a slice forehand but he just makes contact with the opposite racquet face of his topspin forehand. Jack Sock uses and extreme western grip (index knuckle between Western and continental) but Minh's grip is 100% Continental in reverse :) I'm curious if he was taught that grip by a coach or it developed organically by playing ( I know some ping pong players use that grip for added topspin). One more thing! how do you go around the 30min limit on your Sony a6000? does it ever overheat?

    • @tennistim
      @tennistim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Stefan! Thanks for the comment and feedback. Great to hear from a legit USTA coach :) I'm not sure about the background on Minh's grip, but will definitely ask him. The 30 min limit is a bit annoying, I basically check it every few games and manually stop then restart the video once it gets close. Overheating generally isn't an issue-it's placed at the back of the court where there's usually some shade. It did happen when I was recording at the WTA Bank of the West Classic earlier this year, but that was from being in direct sun and temperatures of mid 80s F

    • @stefanrahovean
      @stefanrahovean 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that 30min limit is a great example of bureaucratic crap that's only in place because of some European tariff laws that discriminate between video camcorders and photo cameras. I just don't get it why the big manufacturers like sony and panasonic do it for products sold in the USA. The Panasonic GH4 and GH5 are the only photo/video cameras that don't have that annoying limit but they are a bit bulky. Hopefully, the newer phones coming up, can record 2.7k resolution with no limit and you can hang them on the back fence with a claw tripod (gopros and other action cameras have a crappy video quality in my experience). Keep up the progress!

    interesting player minh is!! its either a super spinny topspin or a slice, and he disguises well. a human backboard. I think he'll probably get beaten at 5.0 - probably people will hit through his defense. but its amazing he's only lost once in 3 years of 4.5! I guess people can't hit through him consistently enough.

      I would say he has the potential to get a stroke that is well disguised, but because of his loooong backswing on his forehand you get time to read him. Also he is setting up for the backhand slice very early. Right now his game is varied but not super well disguised. He has the potential to become a more effective and better player tho. Just my take on it.

    Good game plan. I don't remember you coming to the net as often in previous matches. Smashes/finishing at the net was very good, as well. Great pick up at 5:18.
    I bet Minh trips up a lot of players with his spins, but it's something a good player should be able to deal with. His footwork looks a little lazy at times, but maybe he commits to hitting a slice/lob so early and so he doesn't feel the need to get his footwork right. My dad always used to tell me: "A slice is a defensive shot; never hit it unless you had to." He's obviously had a lot of success but if he wants to get to the next level he has to start dictating points.

    Sea level tennis is so "full stroke". I play at 5,000 ft plus, sometimes 7,000 ft plus. The ball looks the size of golf balls it is so fast. All our strokes are short, stabbing, blocking affairs.

    Grinders are hard, especially if they're really good. On our club we have a 5.5 grinder who has an even slower speed than Minh. But he just has Every.Single.Ball and eventually he wins by opponents getting tired, mishitting when trying to force the point or he suddenly hits a winner out of nowhere. He does it on purpose though because he can hit his winners more frequently. But he just loves to drive his opponents crazy. And the audience loves it. Nothing more fun than having another 5.5 who could hold his own against even 6's get completely frustrated by moonball after moonball and then from out of nowhere a precise winner.

    All the hate on Minh is kind of completely unneeded. Yes his forehand is wonky, however! His record in his area of competition holds true. Part of the sport is enjoying the game and bettering ourselves so him sticking to what he knows isn't terribly bad. That being said his style heavily relies on pushing at a higher degree of play. I think some more angles and variance in down the line shots would make vast improvements at the 5.0 levels of play! It'd be a far more junkball style over straight pushing, and gives him some winner shots with key placement down the line. There were many many many shots in this high light where with a somewhat fast, well controlled topspin down the line on either side would have won him the point!
    Love the vids Tim and the variance of people you play with! Good match, great video. Great fun it seemed!

  • @chapaneseboi21
    @chapaneseboi21 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's pretty good for pretty much an upside down continental forehand.
    But just imagine if all that power and body exertion was used more efficiently into one of the other grips. You'd have to do less pushing and get more power with less effort.
    It's fun to watch though :)

      Yes, Hungary. Tennis is not too popular (but we got to davis cup the world group again, and now we have an atp 250 tournament so maybe it will slowly get better) so not much state money goes into the public side of it, and proper indoor courts would not generate enough income because of the high price (would not generate enough visitors who can pay the market price)if they had to make it only on market financing.

      Don't worry about having to explain someone's rating. The real players understand there is a wide range at each level. Just bc someone thinks they can either beat you or lose to you doesn't mean they have to be rated different. That's why I like UTR, I feel it matches players up better. Do you know your UTR? I would assume in the 9 or 10 range.

    Wow Minh's forehand has more movement than Jack Sock's, Tiafoe's, etc. Fun to watch! I can only imagine playing against him it would be so hard to tell if it's going to go down the line or cross court. I would just stare at it wondering how he's doing that lol
    Good video, some fun opponents you're playing against! I think you're on your way to 5.0 yourself.

    1. Has a very uncomfortable looking forehand. 5:45
    2. Prepares so early for the backhand only to slice it 7:01
    3. Lobs so often its not even useful.

      tennistim then put both USTA and tennisrecord. Tennisrecord is actually pretty good bc it rates you based off your opponent's. Tournaments are usually small draws and you play a lot of scrubs in ntpr unless you're playing open
