And with no audio tricks or effects needed they sound just like their album. Great bunch of guys too. You get the genuine impression that they are friends on and off stage and have been for years and years. It's a real shame that Huey can no longer hear well enough to stay in time and tune with the songs anymore. :(

And the guitars he's playing aren't the amazing pro grade stuff now that's easy to play, like a Suhr or even a good Schechter, so he had to work hard on those 1970s guitars but that's just what guys did.
Today you can buy Eart or Shije guitars from China that out of the box play better than Chris' old Strat probably did. The manufacturing and quality control has just gotten that much better.

Yes, I agree. The live, big, multi-part vocal harmonies were spot on. This sort of expertise is quite rare & takes lots of hard practice. The only slight thing missing from the mix were a few guitar-fills. However, with the vocals being spot on, this song's version is essentially perfect.

Luckily, Huey Lewis was in Clover when Mutt Lange was 1 of the producers. Lange said yes to the change in lyrics. Then, it hit big time!
The 2 of them had a reunion in 1991 when the 2 of them wrote It Hit Me Like a Hammer. Mutt was busy writing for Eddie Money in LA + writing/producing with Bryan Adams in London + Vancouver. Check Hard at Play credits: HL thanks BA + Lange!

One of the many reasons that I feel so fortunate to have been an 80s teen. In 1985, I started playing hair guitar. Ratt, Ozzy, Dokken, etc. Graduated in 87. The day the music died... That was the day Nirvana appeared on Mtv for the first time. Flannel shirts, gay guitars, and no solos. Was the beginning of the end for music.

First time I seen them was on SNL, I think? Long time ago, I was blown away by their skills, vocals, I remember at the end of this song, Huey said, "You heard it hear from the news". Loved them ever since

Huey sounds is very distinctive and recognisable live or studio !
One of the great male vocalist indeed.
Very sad to hear about his hearing loss....It's like a death penalty sentence.
God bless and hope a miracle will cure him.

1982 - no digital, no tracks, no vocal correction, just straight analog and live, on the line recording. Gotta love the 80’s!

Wow, this is a well nigh flawless live version of Huey Lewis & The News' best song, among a long list of great songs. This version is nearly note-for-note like the original studio release version. Surprisingly, there is great replication of the studio's tight, upfront, 3&4-part vocal harmonies. Excellent. Richard
