    immediately sold my lcd for the OLED and man, its become one of my best emulation tools and has literally replaced my Switch. Once I got Yuzu settings down I didn't have any issues with the particular games I cared about, so we'll see how long that lasts but I'm more than satisfied. PS3 emulation has been S tier as well, I also just love the fact that I can play almost any of my regular steam games or roms modded and it just works. There's just so much value to the Deck off the bat that the other PC handhelds don't offer IMO and I cannot think of what valve will choose to innovate for the Steam Deck 2

    • @DaveyG

      I have a feeling it will be a long time before a new replacement unit will take it's place. Minor changes sure. But full new unit it's hard to beat the current OLED. The value is awesome!

      For Yuzu? That will depend on which games you are choosing to emulate. I had to use Power Tools from Decky loader to turn of SMT and limit the GPU to 1100mhz to get steady performance. Almost all titles will run like shit at first, but that's because shaders need to be built. After that it was smooth sailing@@zhivkogalchev4306

    The thing with PS3 emulation is that it’s still a work in progress. They’ve been chipping away at compatibility for years now. It’s actually impressive that just a couple years ago it could only really play a fraction of the games it can play now.

    I hope that the Xenia and RPCS3 devs can somehow take advantage of the OLED higher memory clock speeds and improve X360 and PS3 emulation. That is my dream. To have a handheld powerfull enough to emulate the PS3 era games that have been completely ignored by Sony by not releasing a backwards compatibility program for the PS5.

NOPE, it was an issue with emulation and it wasnt until i was about 2/3rds done with the game that I found out its a weird emulation glitch, and that there was a built in mod to fix hyrule field and it was flawless after that. The emulation between LCD and OLED is no different other than the screen. The only time you'll see a difference is if you overclock and tweak the power settings but that mostly comes down to silicon lottery.

      Depends on the emulator and your setup. Yuzu tracks your playtime per game. Steam will only track the title it's given, so if you just launch yuzu from steam, steam will just track playtime for yuzu as a whole, not individual games you load into yuzu. But if you use something like steam rom manager you can make individual entries for each emulated game, which steam would track on a per game basis.

      I am a "modified" Oled switch owner (and it turns out to be an amazing machine for emulation and regarding battery performance).
      Apart from Gamecube/ps2/ps3/xbox360 games, it can run pretty much every old emulator (in addition to the massive Switch games library so that's about over 40 000 games with an incredible display quality if you have the oled version).
      but if you asked me I would go for the Lenovo Go if I had no Switch.
      However on a price point view you should also consider a thin laptop (for better battery performance and practicability such as usb ports, memory size, etc) with an AMD APU (some even have the same one as the Legion Go)

      The Steam Deck is only more user friendly with Steam Deck verified games, and maybe with Emudeck make things easier. Outside of that, windows is easier to use since most other things you might do on this device is built around Windows.
      That said, Emudeck is in beta on Windows. And I tried about 1-2 months ago on my PC and the experience was not yet as good as using it on the Steam Deck. However, I prefer to use other tools for emulation than Emudeck when given an option.

    Here's my question:
    How does emulation performance on the OLED model compared to the LCD model? With the more efficient chip (6nm vs 7nm) and the faster RAM (6400/MT vs 5500/MT) what kind of emulation performance improvement can we expect? I would imagine it wouldn't be a radical improvement, but I could see games that were borderline, just barely unplayable, on the LCD model and becoming just barely playable on the OLED model.
    No one seems to be willing to answer this question...

    • @matthiasschuster9505
      @matthiasschuster9505 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Emulation is mostly bound to CPU, and in case you upscale and add other nice graphical improvements, the GPU. The performance difference in normal games lies at the range of 0 - 4 fps, so its not huge. What could have changed, is the ability to play with huge texture packs, but I doubt that would make a difference on the small screen. So very marginal improvements performance wise. But: The emulation software itself improves steadily, and I expect as an example to see something like FSR3 to be implemented.

    • @hydzior
      @hydzior 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the same

    • @ottowokeninger9617
      @ottowokeninger9617 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Marginal improvements. I have both models, and have tested some 3DS, PS3 and Switch titles side-by-side. The faster RAM does make compilation, shader-caching and general loading *slightly* faster. For a game like LittleBigPlanet, where at native 720p I was getting 24-25 fps and it bumped up to more like 26-27 fps, so still a little slow but more playable. But it varies so much game to game (LBP 2 runs mostly 30 fps for example, and Demon's Souls also full-speed) and with emulator updates over time. Something like Tears of the Kingdom is still not fast enough by default, without tweaking various settings and hacks via desktop mode.
      Generally, if the game is unplayable due to low FPS on the LCD, it is not ideal on the OLED either. What I have done is dock the LCD model to a OLED TV for arcade / emulation using controllers, and use the OLED model for portable play.
      I think for those borderline-playable, a better investment is waiting until the next Deck model, or a Windows gaming tablet (3x expensive though- something like the Asus Z13 with 13900H + RTX 4060, and mostly to dock it to use with a TV, but it would run high-end emulation @ 4K), but the Steam Deck already covers so many systems. I wouldn't buy it for the (really minor) emulation improvements, but rather for battery life, OLED screen- the game changer (it was hard to play a game like Outer Wilds before), and maybe the improved design of the sticks.

      The Steam Deck is not a closed system. It's essentially a custom OS based off Linux.
      In short, no, this isn't like running custom firmware on your hacked home console. You can install a hell of a lot more illegal shit and still never get banned, because your system is not monitored the way, for example, Nintendo would monitor their Switch.
      And as others have mentioned, emulation is not inherently illegal. It's just that most people don't want to go through the effort of extracting their ROMs and no one really gives a shit about old games since most aren't even sold anymore, so yeah, people just download the ROMs they want and no one cares.

      I find running Xenia from non-Steam games using latest Proton-GE compatibility to be the best, but the emulator has a long way to go. It's less developed than the PS3 emulator. There is a patches folder in which you can find game-specific true / false toggles to make some games look better and run faster. The quality varies a lot though- many XBLA games run fine, some just black screen and others have various issues. Same goes for disc games. Dante's Inferno runs well, along with Alice Madness Returns (including the original Alice game DLC, which may be the best way to play the original Alice), Silent Hill Homecoming (but not Downpour, which has texture flashes).
      Original version GTA IV iso sadly runs decently but has sky texture issues. It still looks clearer than on Series X BC because I think that version runs 720p/60 on there still and looks blurry (plus you lose all the music that was removed with later patches, like Smashing Pumpkins, etc).
      You can also run Xenia through EmuDeck / EmulationStation method, but it seems to perform slower for some reason, and you have to make sure you have the game folders with default.xex or the long character string files for XBLA games, or the iso files for full disc games.
      The better alternatives are running Xenia in Windows where compatibility (and probably speed) is higher than using Proton, or of course a modded 360.

I know some games will do that using Proton compatibility (and maybe also true on Series X, since it's not native Windows), but then they run fine in Windows and get past the boot screen. You can also try switching between DX12 and Vulkan GPU emulation in the config file. It's still kind of a mess of an emulator at this point, the least developed of most of them so least compatible. Hopefully it gets better, more on the level of the PS3 emulator.

      It's pretty decent on a (Windows) gaming tablet or laptop at least (thinking RTX 4060 mobile or better and good CPU). It's at least a much better emulator than the 360 one, Xenia. Games like MotorStorm Pacific Rift, LBP, Infamous, etc. at 4K (and some 60 fps) go way beyond playing on a real PS3 at mostly blurry 720p'ish. And the relatively underpowered Steam Deck still runs maybe half the games exclusive to the console at full-speed or near. Those guys must be really motivated to put that much work into emulating such a complex architecture.
