    You don't have to be a guitar maker to appreciate your content, Ben. There's plenty of useful things helping guitarist to better understand their instrument. Such is my case.

    THERE ARE FEW THINGS MORE SATISFYING THAN WHEN A HAND PLANE IS SET UP PERFECTLY AND YOU GET THOSE NICE CLEAN AND CRISPY PASSES. I'VE GONE THROUGH MANY A CROOKED 2BY4 JUST PRACTICING MY TECHNIQUE AND SHARPENING SKILLS. PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PART OF THE BUILD, DIMENSIONING THE LUMBER IS SO GRATIFYING.

    Love these videos of yours Ben. They are always informative and professionally produced and edited. I have learned so much from watching your tutorials. In fact I've learned more from you than anyone or anywhere else. I look forward to your videos very much..... However lol....... When I'm sat down and looking forward to learning something else, it can be a little annoying when you loose focus and go off on a tangent leaving me waiting, patiently, anxiously for the promised tutorial. Apart from that your videos are awesome. One day I will have some spare money in my bank account. I will be in touch with you to design my very own custom Crimson Guitar. Made by you and with your permission I will spend a little time watching you do your luthier thing..... One day my friend. I've promised myself..

    Very good video as usual Ben. I have been a custom cabinet maker ie furniture 30yrs I have made & used alot of shooting boards & planes, I learned a long time ago Simple is best I have always used an impeccable sharp #4 or #5 plane My joints fit butt ass tight hardly no clamp pressure just as you said. So I say Ben sell the bloody shooting plane. Love your vids from USA.

    In his video on restoring a bench plane, Paul Sellers remarks in passing that for jointing the cheeks of the plane don't need to be square to the sole. I haven't found out what he does when they aren't: what do *you* do?
    BTW, re that Veritas jointing plane, "not expensive" = damn near 300 quid. I'll stick to my N° 6.
    Final question: how flat does the plane sole have to be? I've got mine to the point where toe & heel are bright & shiny, and in between the felt-tip marks have been sanded to peely-wally grey but are still visible. I've gone through ~3 metres of 120-grit and I'm fed up.

    I think it's best if I don't go near a plane again.
    On the instrument I'm currently working on, I planed a hump into my wood and then I worked out that by the time I've made it flat again it wouldn't be wide enough anymore.
    So the solution I came up with was to add another piece of wood in the middle.
    I cut a piece of maple and put it through the planer thicknesser (because that can plane wood properly). Then when it was down to the size I needed I used it as a template to route the edges of the wood I was using for the body.
    The three pieces fit together perfectly :)

    For speed and because I don't own a number 7, I superglue and masking tape the sides face to face with the edges as close as poss, then fix to a reference joint and run a flush trim router bit along it. Close enough for rock 'n' roll.

    June 08, 2022: I just bought a Guild D-150CE Westerly Collection Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar Natural ($1,049.00 + tax). this is a nice sounding all solid wood guitar. But, one side of the top is a lighter color than the other side. I would think if I was truly book-matched, then it would be the same color. What do you think? If it is book-matched, then why are two different shades?

    Forgive my ignorance - and I'm a luthiery pre-novice, so the ignorance is strong in this one - but why is the 'centre' side not made perfectly flat and square prior to slicing the block to create the two halves? Would this be a better way to ensure a perfect centre match, particularly for flamed and quilted wood, that often show a clear discontinuance and a too obvious centre line on the top? Have I missed something, or, much more likely, what have I missed? Cheers.

    • @Erowens98
      @Erowens98 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keith Wallis assuming your cut is perfectly square yes. However a band saw, particularly when splitting wide planks like this cuts at a slight curve. And wood this thin bends by itself very fast.

    Would the levelling beam not be more accurate. And it also removes less material ?

    • @joebigwood7605
      @joebigwood7605 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ian MacPherson It works just as well as a plane. Only problem you get is when you're jointing anything thicker than a drop top, you'd need a very wide leveling beam, and the thicker the board, the longer it takes with a leveling beam.

    • @jacobthellamer
      @jacobthellamer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A plane iron leaves a much cleaner finish and with practice is much quicker than sandpaper. A plane can remove very little material when set up to.

  • @driesvanoosten4417
    @driesvanoosten4417 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The doubling up of the boards in a bookmatch is done to make everything less critical to the joint being out of square. On thin boards, like those of an acoustic guitar top, it can be hard to measure if you are perfectly square.

    Hi Ben, are the levelling beams machined precisely enough to give you that 90 degree finish you demonstrated in the video?

    • @A1BASE
      @A1BASE 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can answer this one as I've got a bunch of them. No, they're not. They're close, but they vary and they're not consistent.

    • @janjoscak
      @janjoscak 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A1BASE I suppose the way around it would be to flatten 1 of the book-matched sheets, flip the levelling beam round and flatten the other sheet. Then whatever inaccuracy is on the levelling beam, it will be cancelled out when sheets are glued together. Does it make sense?

    • @A1BASE
      @A1BASE 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see where you're coming from, but how do you work out where your 'parts' stop and start. Sounds pretty inaccurate to me.
      My solution was to go to a local kitchen counter supplier, tell them your problem and ask if they might have something like a 6x2 inch offcut (or longer) with a 90 degree edge you could have. I bet you they give you 3 or 4... ;)
      attach sand paper to that and you have a 90 degree edge that cant move.

    Question! why are guitar tops in general almost always two piece bookmatched? Is there a reason why we don't really see one piece tops?

    • @Erowens98
      @Erowens98 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mitch people prefer the look of a symmetrical top. And planks wide enough for a 1 piece top are not nearly as common.

    • @mitchtube3
      @mitchtube3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Birki gts interesting. so it's not a structural thing. I'm not saying I don't like bookmatched tops, I've just always wanted to try and find a one piece if I was going to do a build. probably nearly impossible to get though I guess.

  • @KingBollock
    @KingBollock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now then, I am to wood working what Donald Trump is to running a country. I like to have a crack at it but I really shouldn't.
    However... if a skewed mouth plane is preferable but you don't have one, would it help if the part of the shooting board that the piece of wood rests on was angled like a ramp. So the part where you start planing, being the bottom of the ramp, is thinner and would go up to normal height? Does that make sense (even if it's wrong does what I am describing make sense?).
    It seems to me that making a new shooting board would be cheaper than a new plane.

    • @MarkDennehy
      @MarkDennehy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KingBollock Short answer: yes and they do make those. Problem is that it limits the thickness of material you can use because geometry.
