I’ve just received mine 5 minutes ago, my first impression was it’s huge, it is bigger than 2 omnibuses next to each other, the art looks incredible and it is just breathtaking.
I can't lie, I was excited for this until I saw how big it was. I wasn't aware how big the artists editions were. I literally have no place to put that bad boi
Get the artisan edition (paperback as tall as a DC absolute edition) whenever it's available. Artist edition are the same size as the original art, is look at the art. I have the Sandman Overture one because I Love JH Williams III 's work.
Mine's on the way. Simply breathtaking. No panel is wasted. David Mazzucchelli use of black, and irregular lines sets the story perfectly. I honestly think no other artist could have done a better job. It's one of those things, perfect artist, with a perfect vision, at the right time
I do not buy many artist editions, but I had to get this one! I already have DD Born Again, these are the two greatest superhero stories ever in my opinion. I was at a meet and greet with John Romita Jr this summer at Heroes Con, and he was asked who he thought was the greatest DD artist ever, no hesitation - he said Mazzucchelli, and then said he thought Year One was also the best Batman story/art ever.
Black & White shows you everthing, color makes you focus. It is fun to see the detail, but for that quick read you need to know where to look. Black & White get you to the neighborehood, color gets you to the door.
Like everyone, I literally laughed when the box showed up about how big it is. But holy crap is it beautiful. Even my non-comic-loving girlfriend even sat down to take a look at it and admire because it's so accessible and fun to pore over.
Mazzucchelli’s wife actually did the colors for both the newsprint version and the collected edition. I think she did the “new” version first, then had to dial it back for the single-issue newsprint version.
The "new" colors are actually quite old... AFAIK, they were done for the first collected edition of the story, in 1988, and have been used in all the reprints ever since. The Absolute was actually my first experience seeing the original colors.
@@THX1178 I thought they scanned some clean copies of the original single issues to build the "original colors" version? Maybe I'm mistaken. I love the way those massive Taschen Marvel Library books do that. They are amazing volumes and worth every cent.
@robertdouble559 Yeah that's exactly how they did it, we were saying that there must be many who didn't see those original issues so that those colours were new to them when they saw the absolute version.
I don't own any artist editions but this is a must buy, Batman is my favorite superhero and Mazzuchelli's art enlarged looks so good my problem is where to store this thing.
@@elvaquerovaquero5243 I was just joking, I'm not poking at anyone or trying to be negative! But I laughed my butt off when Omar said Oh! A transparent page! 😭😂
Thanks for the video, the book looks amazing! Did you only read the original issues as a kid amd not the tpb? For alot of people the original issue colours were only seen with the Absolute as since 88 the trade / redone colours have been the only ones used.
@NearMintCondition The 'coming back' to comics as an adult is such an amazing moment. For me it was Joe Q being in charge at Marvel and Morrisons New X Men / Milligan & Allreds X-Force that caught my attention and brought me back. 😊
Remember there was the guy in the epic.collection group who was daily vocalising being against omnibus " because artists draw at regular comic size"? What a dick.
Sometimes, there's no access to the originals or simply they use scans of the original issues (for example, elektra assassin) and in that kind of cases, yeah, better to just have it at regular size. Deluxe or absolute size are just zoom scans and usually look pixelated.
Thank you for the review Omar! After watching the video yesterday, I went to my LCS to order it today. Looks like I made it in time to get my copy. The status of the book is LOW STOCK from the distributor. Wouldn't be surprised if it becomes unavailable real soon. For those who wait too long, you might be in for a disappointment.
I like the b&w style, but if must have colors, I prefer old style colors (like the one of the absolute version) Can’t appreciate these new digital colors.

Absolutely beautiful book. Now that's a coffee table book for me.
You can use it as a coffee table actually!

Good idea Kramer! 😂
Love my copy.Greatest release this year.

They are the size of the original art (plus additional border). Some of the Silver Age editions are even larger.
Be on the lookout for the 'Artisan Editions' which are smaller, paperback, and at a much lower price point
I keep mine in the book on the floor or on top of book shelfs on the side.
@fireboy312002 I built simple angled supports so I could put them on top of my bookcase (Kallax) and face them forward.

Can’t wait to get this! Haven’t bought an artist edition since Daredevil: Born Again. 🙂
same here
That my friends, is a thing of pure, unadulterated beauty.
Got this a couple of days ago ... beyond amazing! The best of all formats for this modern comic book classic!
We all love your commentary Omar. Amazing
Getting mine today!
Never apologize for the commentary Omar, it’s so insightful and informative. You’ve educated a lot of us and cost us so much money with it!
What a gorgeous book.
Dam.... Every freaking page is actually insane for an Artist Edition!

My God. You can use that as a skateboard!
Yeah, this was a day 1 pre-order for me. Arrived last week, actually. Fantastic Artist Edition to go along with my Sin City & DKR editions.
I’ve never seen this story in B&W before and I have to say it looks better this way. Such amazing artwork.

I'm blown away by how big this book is.
This book looks awesome!!! I can’t believe how small the Absolute Edition looks in comparison to this version! 👍🏼💙

Same, I would imagine most people had only seen the redone colours until the Absolute.

I have the Absolute. It looks so tiny next to this. Kind of want this but have no idea where I would keep it.

Correct. I think the first time I got the trade when I came back to comics in 2002. So I didn’t even know about the new colors.

Holy Frick, this makes the massive absolute look tiny.
Thank you, father. I shall become a bat.
