In this video I demonstrate and describe the brief process on how to reset the engine and transmission control modules on VW, Audi, Skoda, and Seat vehicles built starting in the late 1990s equipped with an electronic drive-by-wire throttle. The steps to reset these modules is as follows:
1/ Get into the passenger side drivers seat of the vehicle;
2/ Close the Drivers Door;
3/ Lock all of the Vehicles Doors;
4/ Switch the Ignition to the Accessory position;
5/ Wait for at least 15 seconds;
6/ Push the Accelerator Pedal all the way down (as far as it will go) and hold it there for at least 30 seconds;
7/ Whilst still holding the Accelerator Pedal down switch off the Ignition ;
8/ Switch of the Ignition;
9/ Remove your foot from the Accelerator pedal;
10/ Remain sitting in the car (with all of the doors locked) for at least 3 minutes;
11/ Start the Vehicle
12/ Drive the Vehicle how you would normally drive for 15 minutes.
By following the procedure outlined in this video it may help resolve potential transmission issues in your vehicle, but be advised that this is not a substitute for having a professional technician resolve major internal mechanical issues in your engine or transmission if the vehicle continues to have issues after performing this procedure.

I have a 2017 passat rline 1.4tsi which is now 6yrs old, and developed a judder when pulling away in 1st gear. I was going to book it into a dealer at the cost of god knows how much, but after some searching, I found this video. All I can say is Wow! No judder and gear change is as smooth as silk, and the engine is definitely purring quieter now. Once again, thank you very much!!
Thanks so much for this video. It saved me $8,500.00 USD. The dealership told me that it wouldn't accept the code and charged me $398.00 to hook it up to their computer. They said the electronics in the transmission were bad. They would have to replace the transmission for $8,500.00 dollars. It wouldn't shift past 3rd gear and was banging when shifting gears. Drove it home at 45mph. I saw this video and it took me 3 tries but now the 2007 VW beetle runs great. Dishonest dealership, I think so. Certified VW mechanics can't put the code in but I can by using this video. Thanks again you are the greatest.
Hi Mate, thanks for telling your story! Unfortunately it is just way to common that Dealerships and their Technicians just want to swap major components and charge customers a fortune! Hopefully we can help out a few more people with this video, so don't forget to Subscribe to the channel and Share this video into as many of your socials and technical forums as you can to help spread the word!!! Hey, we have an audi a3 2015. The car bogs down when getting to third gear. Will resetting the modules help?
Hi Mate, it can’t hurt to give it a go! Cheers Drew
Vw dealerships are disgusting..
Following your method, my 2007 VW Rabbit indeed improved the gear shifting (from 2nd to 3rd gear), making much smoother and reducing the jerkiness. Thank you very much for helping me save money and solved the problem.
What’s your mileage? I’ve got 222,000 kms
Thanks mate, great video and timing. I reset while in Cole’s car park, but I’d had a few so I didn’t drive home. My wife drove but I didn’t ask her how it felt as she never notices any difference with the car. Will go for a long drive tomorrow and give feedback. Thanks again 😊
This reset worked to reset limp mode on my 2013 VW Jetta TDI. DPF and EGR valve(s) are clogged. This method enabled me to exit limp mode and regenerate the DPF 🚗 👍
Thanks a zillion to the fine gentleman that took the time and effort to make this video. Sincerely appreciate it 😁
Thank you very much,I thought it was a joke but I followed the steps and it really did work in my new beetle! You saved me a lot of money!!!
What issue did you have with your beetle and how does it feel like after the reset?
What were the symptoms? Any trouble codes?
Thank you for your assistance. It worked. And within seconds could tell a huge difference. Thank you
THANK YOU! Was having weird shifting and odd intermittent idling. I have changed almost all sensors and even replaced fuel pump, filter. This cured my problem instantly. Gears shift like when I first bought my jetta in 2009. So thankful for people like you!
Thatnk you so much.
That's a really great info.
I'm taking my A3 in for oil leaks tomorrow and was going to tell them i was having trouble with the transmission... you just saved me almost 2k, many MANY thanks!!
Further Update: Was not a software issue, Transmission case seal had broken and leaked out oil - Transmission is now in for repair. * big sigh *
Shame, that shouldn’t happen! Did they cover it under warranty? Cheers Drew
This actually worked like a charm! I have a 2005 Jetta TDI wagon that got a new automatic transmission and for the last 2 years after getting it back from the shop it has had a very hard shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and not very smooth in others this reset just made this car feel brand new. Thank you!
Hi, thanks for this video. IT WORKED like a charm on my 01 Allroad 2.5V6 tdi Tiptronic. The issue we had was some occasions it shifted too late (at 3000 rpm) and had extremely bad gas mileage. Now it learned to shift nicely below 1800 rpm and shows consumption numbers I have never seen on that screen before. Thanks again
This is one of the best guides I have ever watched; and it is receiving my first comment. Amazing job and I am going to test this out later on today!
Thanks mate! Cheers Drew
How was the result? Did it work?
I agree. Great job. Question though how long does this last before have to keep doing over and over
@@Mikelarson6112I normally have to do it in my car once a week 2010 VW golf 2.5L but it’s better than spending thousands to fix
Thanks drew, this worked on our VW GOLF 2011, made me look very clever in front of the in laws 😂😎
Thank you soo much for this very helpful and well made video! My 2018 VW Tiguan had been struggling with acceleration, jumpy shifting and poor gas mileage after getting some work done @ VW. They dismissed my concerns since no lights were on but I knew it felt sluggish. Followed your steps and now it’s got its edge back! Responsive, getting better mileage, and much more enjoyable to drive. I live in sport mode and like to “drive it hard” haha. Can’t thank you enough!!
Thanks for your comments and feedback! You may find you just need to do this periodically unfortunately :) Cheers Drew

Does the tiguan not have DSG?
Thank you so much,
I have just followed these steps in my Audi A3,1,4T and the transmission feels brand new.
Awesome and thanks for sharing!! Cheers Drew
Hi, same car. Some times I feel the gear is slow to engage. Same with reverse, do you think this will help?
@@luisfmoreno Hi Luis, sometimes mine is slow to engage either both reverse or drive. Funnily enough, it's actually my wife's car and she never notices it ... I think it's literally that I start the engine and then engage the transmission quicker than she does. So, what I typically do is start the engine before I get in the car and then I never notice the issue! Cheers Drew
Good morning everyone so I drive a Audi q5 2016 it has 111000 miles on it love my car but every since I bought it in April of this year it has been jerking are bucking in D mode S mode and M mode I was tired of driving like that today I went to research what can cause jerking and bucking and how to fix when accelerating I found this channel and I did the steps and guys I kid you not guys my car went 120 on the highway smooth as butter with gear changing I tried all the drive modes and it works thank you sir for saving me money to go mechanic to get my car fix 😊 to all you guys who say it’s not working it did for me have a good one
Awesome procedure, i've just instaled a new CAI, camshaft position sensor and upgraded the coil packs, so for a few kilometers the car was jerky and was doing "weird" stuuf over low RPM accelerations. After the reset the car felt stronger under acceleration and overall more reliable. Hope stays that way. Thanks for the video!!
Same problem To me Volkswagen Jetta 2015
My Audi a4 07 has been in limp mode for two months and I have replaced about ten sensors and parts. I recently did the head gasket valve cover and still nothing had changed and limp mode was still on. Today I watched this video and unplugged my ground for a few hours and did this and it’s now out of limp mode. I’m still having problems w acceleration into gear but it’s driving. Thank you so much
Wow thanks mate. I have a 2015 A3 with the 7spd S-tronic and found it had some shudder on take off. This reset has completely removed it. Crazy!
Glad it helped and thanks for sharing! I personally think VW, Audi and Skoda should stand up and be accountable for the mess that they have created with this transmissions, whereby it should be free for life to get these transmissions repaired at a Audi service centre IMHO!! Cheers Drew
do you have to keep doing it often?
It worked on my daughter’s 2006 beetle. The transmission was not down shifting now after doing this it magically worked perfectly
Hi Frank, great news and thanks for sharing! Cheers Drew
¡Gracias!
Thanks mate! Cheers Drew
Just performed this on my 2008 S4, WOW!! Shifts are occurring when they should now and the acceleration is much smoother!! Thanks a million.
Hi...Just performed your procedure on my grand daughters 2005 Audi Quattro, 1.8 Turbo, AT, and it works fine......Did notice her backup lights are still on when the car is in drive, this was going on before the procedure...Any ideas on the back up lights staying on when we drive it???.....Thanks again!
Hi Mate, I’m glad you were able to sort out your granddaughter’s transmission! I would say that the reverse lights are a seperate issue! Cheers Drew
How how long does this last though and what cause it to need to be reset. I got stranded in middle of road and wouldn’t move until I did this. So far so good this worked on 21 q8
Seriously works mate . I am surprised and impressed. Thanks mate and you have a new subscriber . Cheers mate .

Does this method remove the ie dsg tune?
No mate! Cheers Drew
I hit a deer and had the ABS and transmission disconnected while troubleshooting all wiring and now have u0101 code. Hopefully this and checking the fuses will fix it.
It was the red/yellow switched power wire. Shorted out and blew the fuse.
My 2024 Volkswagen Jetta had a transmission problem. The transmission fault light came on at a red light and would not go into gear. No forward or reverse gears. I shut the car off, let it sit for about 3 minutes. Started it back up and the transmission fault light went out and it drove normal. What's crazy is that the car was driving normal before the transmission fault. No funny shifting, no strange noise, nothing. That was about a month ago. Fast forward to today, it happened again. I actually stopped to get coffee. Came back out to the car, Started it and the transmission fault light came on and the car wouldn't go into gear, no reverse or forward gears. This time, it took about 15min for the transmission to reset itself. The car only has 45,000mi on it. I don't know if the cold weather has anything to do with it but I'm a little scared to drive it now. I'll try the technique that I just watched in this video and see what happens.
Is this for DSG only? They also make a non DSG 6 Spd auto transmission
Yeah non DSG owners want to know!
@@chadstrohmayer541 it works on mine and I got the nun do clutch. I got the 09 train. It definitely worked for me.

Will this clear the U0101 No TCM Communication error?
Hi, My 2005 Audi A3 3.2 started the other day with all the gears flashing on the display. We couldn't engage any gears. I left for a while, restarted and waited for it to warm up. We could then change gears, but engine light stays on. It's currently at the garage who reckon it's either the solenoid, or a mechanical issue with a $5 000 price tag. You reckon I should try this first?
Hi Craig, for the sake of $5000 I would definitely try this out first! Cheers Drew

If my car is tuned to have no throttle delay, will this process reset the tune?
Does this apply to a VW Golf made in 2014 ? I've done 30k miles and had no problems with the transmission at all. I think it's a continuous variable automatic gear box. So far if it ain't broke I'm not likely to try to reset anything. Advice much appreciated.
Hi Mate, yes I believe this video will apply to your Golf! Cheers Drew
My 2015vw golf tsi gave a transmission ⚠️ so I tried your brilliant solution but sofar it hasnt worked. Pleased for the others that it worked. Any other suggestions?
Does this still work if i have D flashing & car does not move?

Would this work on a 2019 Jetta?

Will the reset work on a Jetta 5? I also think I may be experiencing the same problem because when I put it in gear the car doesn't move and the gear im in flashes.
I have a brand new audi s3 with a few hundred miles. When im in sport mode using the paddles the 2nd to 3rd shift at about 3800rpm is very harsh and jerky sometimes it feels like I hit a pothole do u think this would fix this problem?
Did you fix it?
Mine does this in 6th I've has malfunction message appear aswell it's a piss take take it back to audi imo
Sport mode is always very agressive (too agressive for me). I would use normal mode, until it has at least 10K miles on it. If this complaint stays with normal mode, i recommend to have it checked by the Audi dealership.
Thank you so much❤ it really work for volkswagen Golf R.. thanks for your help hope more helping tips❤
Does it work

I have u0101, can this help?
I have an Audi A4 B9 from 2017 with the DL382 transmission. Today, I tried to drive off from a parking lot but only managed to go 20 meters before the car lost power. The error code P0811 appeared, indicating excessive clutch slippage. Just before this, the car was driving without any issues. Every time I try to drive in D of R again, the car loses power after 20 meters, and the error reappears. The car has 141,000 km on the odometer.
Does this reset help with this issue? Thank you!
It won’t hurt to try … but I don’t like your chances! Cheers Drew
Will this work on a 2011 polo1.4?
When your car is having problems shifting in the engine light comes on is this what you do I own a Volkswagen bug 2002. it starts to not shift correctly and downshift too soon and the engine lights on
Hi, I used an OBD to check my car fouls and I used to have 17 issues on the transmission. I applied this method to clear them and it worked but when I turned on the ignition and did the check again all the errors came back
That's cos your transmission actually has fault that need to be fixed . More of hardware
If my car was tuned stage 1 will it affect ?
Thank you for the information. I plan to test it in my 2008/2009 Audi A4 B8. It seems there might be an issue with the gears or shifting in my Automatic S tronic.
While driving, it appears the gears aren't changing automatically in the D drive mode, seemingly stuck in the first gear I guess because I didn't hear any switch gear little noise.
Only on Sport mode and manual mode, I notice shifts based on speed that are switching automatically and it looks good.
I experienced a noise when starting my audi in P position today, giving gas for 15-30 seconds. Could this have caused the gear switch problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am having a similar issue have you figured it out? I’ll put my car in D and it won’t shift out of first gear until I put it in S then I go back to D and it will work normal until I stop and I have to do it again.
Will this method 1. Be an option for a tcm communication code? 2. Would it remove an apr ecu flash?
Did you figure out about if it removes the apr flash or not?
I'm trying it now. My car wont even turn over with u0101 code and park indicator flashing. I have a tune on my passat tdi.
My audi A3 shown "Vehicle electronics malfunction, shift to P before leaving car" should i use this procedure ? please advise. Thanks
Hi, i have passat 2017. The transmission get locked at P, i sow one video says press in the the yellow tip inside, i do it. And the gear is moving BUT the car is still not working, and if i put the gear on P it’s locked again.
I have a question. Have not tried this yet but my wife’s 2011 VW Jetta Se 2.5 has terrible jerking when gear shifting. Either when you are slamming the pedal in 1st gear or when you are about 3000 RPM’s it feel like they gears are slipping. And I have been told we need a new transmission. Also tried it in the manual mode and it gets jumpy when shifting. I did a tranny oil flush but no one seems to know the cause of it! Hoping this works!
I just tried it and it seems to fix my jumping when hard acceleration or gear shifting! 2011 VW JETTA SE. thank you!
also for renault ??
Can I try this on a 5cyl 2013 Passat ? (No DSG transmission)
I got the same face so you do to 09 non DSG AND IT WORKED FOR ME BIG TIME you might have to do it more than once
I have a 2012 Audi A1 with P283C Shift Fork C Position on the diagnostic tool. I can move the gear selector from P, N, R, and D, but when I start to drive, it is stuck in gear 2. I wait for few minutes and it is gone and can drive normally. then few days after, it comes back, then is gone again. I have booked for a transmission specialist but it would be good if you have some experience about it and if this method of resetting the transmission program might work on my car. Cheers!
Sounds like something with/inside the mechatronic.
Hi mate any news on this I have 2015 A3 exact same problem and code?
Thanks
Regards Joe
@@joeyt6813 I brought it to a transmission specialist, they drove the car, cleared the code, and was told that we need to observe the car more. 1 month has passed and the code and the problem did not come back anymore so far. so the mechanic was suspecting about the gearbox mechatronic system but they hesitated to open it up as it will be costly.
Hey mate... Sounds exactly like the problem on my 2014 Volkswagen Touran. Brought it to the mechanic and they've changed the mechatronics twice. They've also replaced the clutch and inspected the gearbox twice. They've cleared the error codes and I was told to collect the car. But when driving home the hi rev problems and intermittent stuck on gear 2-3 problems came back. I then asked them to tow back the car for repairs as I wouldn't want to be stuck on the highway in D but gears seems to be in N like it did a year ago. Maybe I can try this method of reset and see if the problem goes once I get the car back...
I might be out of my league here, but I own a 2001 Bora, my car does the exact same but stuck in 2nd more often than working good recently. I've been told to check my speed sensor as it could be going bad and not entirely bad, so it does show sometimes on a scan. You could give that a try as it's not an expensive item to change. I've yet to order my replacement tho but I can give an update once I do

I’ve been having transmission problems for like 2 months. It drives great around town shifts gears good no noises but everytime I go up a hill to go to work it starts to give me issues. It’ll start to high rev and when I try to slow down it’ll have trouble shifting gears then it’ll high rev and shift gears at like 4RPM. I don’t hear clunking or gears skipping but I can smell the transmission fluid. Then I basically let it sit then it works fine again. No check engine light either! I take it to shops but they don’t really know either. I’d appreciate any help it’s a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SE about 120k miles just got a transmission flush but I didn’t do this method. I am going to try this on my Jetta 2015 TSI in canada.
I’ll let you guys know.
I bought this car used, excellent condition, but I noticed a small jerk in the 3-4 shift. Especially when I’m going uphill. When the car is cold or hot it also shifts different.
I’ll come back after I try this.
Hi Mate, I suspect that there are different profiles for different temperatures, thus completely expected that it will shift differently from cold to hot. I look forward to hearing how you go with it :) Cheers Drew
So it’s only been 10 days I thought it was longer. But I made sure to come back and share.
So I hope this isn’t a placebo effect but I do feel a difference after trying this. The car shifts more to my style, I drive it in regular mode and it shifts better, no jerk on 1-2-4-5-6 etc. slight jerk at 3 for me still. It’s an auto, but feels like a clutch slip. It’s barely there now though. So I’m happy with what I have now. In sports mode it’s clean shifting. When it’s warm the shifting is even better. All in all , I believe it did work and I’m happy with the results.
