    Great video. I grow them all over the garden especially around my fruit trees. A true bee magnet in my garden. A time when we really need to look after our bees.

    I really am going to put a concerted effort to grow it. Mine was absolutely beautiful and thru a very difficult stressful year last year, I let it die.

      Oh awesome! Yes, I really believe they are one of the few hidden power houses in the garden that pack a real punch with pest control, brings in huge amounts of pollinators, smells amazing and has incredibly tasty leaves.

    Hi. Thanks for your amazing video. Is there a "wrong" time to prune Basil. Mine is not doing well after the last hard prune. It is quite woody..leaves are always droopy.

      Really good question! I would not prune it in the dead of summer or winter. Summer it's too hot and winter it's not growing strong enough to build energy. For me, the best time is spring as the temps start to warm up and you can see the plant coming back to life. I hope this helps and I'm so glad you enjoyed this video 🌻

    Could you use this in cooking, like lasagne for example? I know it sounds odd as it can be rather invasive, however, I have trouble growing mint here and perhaps that’s a clue as to my lack of success with growing Basil also..? I was hoping to grow tons of mint as it’s useful indoors to mask the scent trails of mice. This helps keep them away from your pantries etc.
    Ah you’ve just solved the problem of your old neighbours 😃 You needed to gift them a perennial basil plant to enjoy basil tea ☕ 😂 You may have had a more pleasant neighbour 🍃☕

      Hahaha, unfortunately I don't think any amount of calming tea will turn that neighbour into a nice person 😂
      Oh, absolutely, you can add it into all sorts of cooking. You can add it into lasagna as you say, fresh on pizza or anything else, in salads, etc. I would just use about half what you usually would with normal basil because of how potent it is. It is amazing fresh though!
      As for growing, perennial basil actually thrives on neglect, much like mint. They both like full sun and just enough water to survive, not much more.
      I really hope you manage to get a plant going to grow your own because it's just so yum and versatile 🌻🌻🌻

    Bought mine as a small plant and I let it grow thinking to myself what if she dies up until now I have 6 cuttings and couldn't be happier

    I absolutely love Basil. It’s my most favorite herb. So is perennial basil the same as African blue basil or where can I buy this particular plant? I had never heard of basil being a perennial, I always thought all Basil’s were annuals. I live in Saint Augustine FL. Thank you for such a great video!

      Oh yay!!! I also love basil! It's such an awesome plant! From smell and bees through to eating they are simply awesome!
      Yes, you are correct with the African Blue Basil. That's a common alternative name it goes by. I know that in the US Bakers Creek has a really good basil range and they have a few different perennial basil varieties to choose from.
      One thing to remember is that the leaves are more bitter than the annual sweet basil that's so common, so you need to compensate for that, but I find that simply adding more lemon makes it perfect.

      It is the greatest of pleasure and thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment with your question 😁 Yes, technically you can eat them but they are very hard sticks. The sweet basil we are used to have very tender shoots that the flowers grow on when it bolts but this perennial basil has very firm stems. Hope this helps 🌻

      I'm trying to find your video on pruning Perennial (African Blue) Basil.
      We have one in a pot that has been fantastic for past few years ... but is looking 'woody' and not putting out fresh new shoots & leaves ... despite being given a good dose of compost in +-August.
      So I'm wondering if I should cut it back ... or wait for our W.Cape (S.West) weird lonnnng winter to be over and see if it perks up?
      Many thanks for any advice

    Enjoyed your video. I live on the east coast of Australia and have a number of different basils growing including the one you call Perennial Basil. I've had it for years and it loves growing in the rocks on the edge of my veggie garden (it self seeded). I looked on the internet to find out a bit more about basils particularly the difference between holy basil and Thai basil. There were numerous types of basil referred to with descriptions and pictures. Yet none of them matched my plant....except yours....which is the same variety. We also call it perennial basil and it is quite popular. I also grow other mints including Vietnamese mint which is quite an attractive bushy plant and easy to grow. We use these plants regularly in Asian stir fries, soups and salads. They give great clean and refreshing flavours to dishes. Am going to look for your perennial basil pesto recipe. I agree. I don't think it would work made in the usual Italian style.
    Interesting to hear of problems with monkeys, baboons and moles. Although I live in a big city I back onto a several hundred hectares of bush. Our problem is Possums (brush and ringtail) and native marsupial rats who often eat our plants. Flying foxes can also be a problem for fruit.

      I am so glad that I was able to help you get a positive match on your perennial basil and seeing as our climates are VERY similar it would make sense that the same plant thrives on both locations.
      Your basil salad combination sounds divine and unfortunately I haven't got around to making that perennial pesto video yet, but it is coming, I promise! What I have found is that using perennial basil for the pest requires a lot of lemon juice. I mean, a lot. The acidity cuts through the bitterness and adds a very unique freshness with the incredibly strong basil flavour this variety gives off.
      You should also try get your hands on the pink perennial basic I showed in the video because that is a show stopper in the garden.
      I love hearing about what happens in other parts of the world, like possums and flying foxes, although I am not sure if your wildlife or ours is more damaging 😅

    Perennial basil is a category including Holy, Tulsi, African Blue, and other species and varieties as opposed to annuals. While you otherwise did a good job on the video it's kind of useless if we don't know what species you're talking about. Apologies if you said so and I missed it.

      Hey, thanks for the comment. I am pretty sure I mentioned in the video that I have 2 varieties, which were White and Pink Perennial Basil (Ocimum basilicum spp), which as you correctly point our are very different to varieties like African Blue Basil, Tulsi, etc. I hope this helps clarify things a little?

    I just did a hard prune of my perennial basil. New shoots are sprouting from the thick woody stems.
    The bush was getting huge (1.5 x 1.5 m)
    I use it in stews or pesto for baking. The leaves and taste is very robust.

      Oh nice! Yeah they can get pretty big and grow aggressively. This is why I absolutely love perennial basil and much prefer it over the annual varieties.
      I'm so glad you are also managing to use it and I have to agree that the flavour is strong and as you say, robust.
      I have a recipe I'm going to do a video on this week. Have you found a recipe that works for you to make pesto?

      I make a Franken-pesto with what is on hand and I add amounts by tasting.
      Usually sunflower seeds, a neutral oil (it's hard to get olive oil with the right taste in my area), lots of lemon or lime juice and preserved lemons (also homemade from the garden), garlic, cumin and salt( if needed).
      Adding milder tasting leaves like spinach or sweet potato leaves can help to bulk out the pesto and dilute the very strong basil flavour. A little goes a long way with this great tasting herb.

      Oh amazing, thanks for sharing! I also mostly franken-pesto it (love that you named it that 😁) and add lots of lemon juice. I love your option with spinach to bulk it up because as you say a little goes a long way and this basil is pretty powerful from a taste POV. Thanks again for sharing 🌻

      I tried out basil tea as you suggested and it helps calm my anxiety a lot. Tonight I paired it with rooibos for some extra calming action for a good nights sleep.

    I love basil's.. i have different types..holy basil..this basil sweet basil and the purple basil .i just love all my herbs.I started growing more this year..but my problem are monkeys harvesting and destroying my vegetables..cucumbers..tomatoes..blueberry fruits..Butternut.. litcis..etc. I live in Durban. Looks like you don't have issues with monkeys. Ant tips to prevent them coming to destroy my produce?

      Oh no, that's so frustrating! I feel your pain because we have baboons and they cause big issues. I refuse to enclose my garden in a net or fence so we have neighborhood whatsapp groups to alert when they are coming. I then have just enough time to set up my sprinklers which is pretty effective at keeping them away. Turns out they hate water being sprayed at them so sprinklers work really well.
      That being said I have heard monkeys are a huge problem and hard to deal with. Your only option might be a 40% shade cloth or mesh wire enclosure if sprinklers don't work.

Monkeys are too cheeky..they come harvest early in the mornings..I even have some exotic vegetables and fruits from my country of origin

      Good question! It depends where in the world you are. Here in South Africa it is commonly sold as a plant in nurseries, however a lot of seed companies sell seeds, including Bakers creek. They go by the name of African basil, blue basil and many others. I hope you manage to find some because perennial basil is truely and amazing plant to have in the garden 🌻

      Hey Laura, where I am here in South Africa most nurseries stock them, however, I'm not sure about in the US. That being said I have checked and Bakers Creek does have quite a few perennial basil's that will more than likely do the same thing as the flower stalks look very similar. The flavour of the leaves might just vary 🌻

      @@angelaraum1545 wow, that's a tough one! It looks very similar but I see Bakers Creek list it as an annual. I also read some of the reviews where people mentioned it spreads easily and I haven't found that to be the case with the white and pink perennial basil. There is also the Thai basil and African Blue Basil, the African one being the most. Loosely related, that are perennial.
      It's really worth finding the right one as they simply provide and abundance of food, bring in masses of pollinators and smell insanely good 🌻

    Yep, there is no such thing as a specific perennial basil. There are named varieties of perennial basil. Which variety is this guy goofing in about?
