Well, ring-magic isn't explained in a lot of detail in the movie trilogy. In my head canon Peter chose the finger ring thing as a tool for "show don't tell", so the audience understands the connection between Sauron and the One Ring from the moment of the prolog.
Also, people calling Isildur names often don't understand that this behavior was literally put into the Ring's "source code". It was Sauron’s measure to ensure its indestructibility, especially when he isn't in control at that moment time. And it did work on Isildur. It also worked on Frodo, but only after months, not just a few hours.
Gandalf's understanding that Sauron hadn't thought about Hobbits (as they didn't exist then, cough) when he wrote his magic "source code" was what tipped the scales.

    • @ddhVapor
      @ddhVapor 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

Yea you should have left that in the video.
In my opinion, the book version of Isildur taking posession of the ring actually makes more sense, since in that Sauron is already beaten and dying, so its just a matter of getting there and hacking his ring bearing finger off without much of a resistance.
I agree with @PiscatorLager , the movie ring thing is probably meant as a tool of "showing instead of telling"

Sauron never knows (nor does he care) what's the name of the hobbit carrying the ring. He just knows that _a hobbit_ is carrying it. So when Pippin looks into the Palantir he automatically assumes that's the ringbearer - and when Aragorn looks into it he believes that now HE has the ring.
When his army is defeated in the Pelennor fields he naturally assumes that happened because Aragorn used the power of the ring, and when Aragorn marches the remainder of the armies of Gondor and Rohan Sauron thinks he has gone mad with power thanks to the ring.
When he learns Frodo has been captured and a Powerful elf warrior (which is what the orcs thought Sam was because he was carrying and empowered by the ring) had freed him he assumed they were spies with no direct connection to the ring, which is why he doesn't think twice about it or put any defences to Mount Doom.
The fact is that Sauron never even considered the possibility that someone might want to destroy the ring instead of using it. He wants nothing but total domination over the world so naturally he believes everyone else wants the same, and hence nobody would turn down the chance of mastering the ring. He only realised what was actually going on once Frodo put on the ring at Mount Doom
In a way he was right, since nobody living on Middle Earth would have been able to willingly destrly the ring, once they got to the place where it could be destroyed anyone weaker than Sauron at his peak would have fallen to the temptation. The only way it could happen was by accident (or divine intervention)

In fairness, Sauron's entire life is a rolling calamity.
Becomes lieutenant to Morgoth. Sees the Valar coming to shit-mix his boss and he GTFO of dodge before he gets some.
Captures Beren and Finrod, but gets woozy when he attacks Luthien, and Huan pins him by the throat. Luthien takes the piss for a bit threatening to relieve him of his current physical form which by this point is quite powerful, and Sauron spills the beans before being let go.
Morgoth gets battered by his betters, so Sauron begs for clemency from the Valar. Gets forgiven, but like a little bitch can't face the shame of returning to the Valar's side. Flees to Middle-Earth.
Takes the mantle of dark lord. Hatches a master plan to corrupt the free peoples with rings. The moment he puts the One on, the Elves call him on his bullshit and he has to go to Eregion to get the other rings of power personally, muttering to himself about the fallibility of his plans.
He gets the Seven, gets the Nine, but the Three he really wanted are already gone. Hands out the rings and has some success with the Nine, but the dwarves are too strong to be fully affected, so his plan by this point is perhaps 30% effective.
Decides to push his luck after Eregion and take Lindon, but the Numenoreans turn up and send him packing back to Mordor after massacring his army.
Once back home, gets cocky again, so the Numenoreans come back to spank him and he straight up surrenders, recognising that they'll hand him his own arse if he fights.
Gets taken to Numenor and tries to get them to attack the Valar. God directly intervenes with a "nope" admin-command and deletes Numenor, drowning Sauron and forcing him to go home shapeless. This resulted in the loss of his pretty face, and he looked like an angry hobo ever since.
Builds his body back but is still under-strength when he decides to prematurely attack Arnor and Gondor. The Last Alliance of Ass-Kicking Chads turn up to bully him some more. For lulz one of them cuts his ring finger off and steals his Ring that he spent so much time building his failed master plan around.
Spends a long time hiding and sulking in spirit-form crying about the unfairness of it all.
Decides to take shape in Dol Guldur and just hang out and chill, considering his life. The White Council turn up with an eviction notice and sends him packing. Hobos his way back to Mordor.
Gets his shape back, and again gets cocky. Attacks Gondor and things seem to be going well, until he realises he was paying attention to the wrong guys all along. Hobbits turn up and violate his Ring, and for the last time, he's sent packing, but this time into the Void as a shapeless being unable to effect change or gain his strength ever again.
His is not really a tale of consistent success. Everyone's had a piece of this guy over the years.

I know this is only talking about the movies, but I always had the impression that the last battle of Sauron during “The Last Alliance” was a five on one beat down.
“Alas! yes,’ said Elrond. ‘Isildur took it, as should not have been. It should have been cast then into Orodruin’s fire nigh at hand where it was made. But few marked what Isildur did. He alone stood by his father in that last mortal contest; and by Gil-galad only Círdan stood, and I. But Isildur would not listen to our counsel.”

    Sauron in the books:
    1) Hmm, if noone else can defeat the enemy kings, then I will do it myself... (dies, loses the rings, his physical body and his realm for half an age)
    2) Hmm, the enemy king is now dead. Interesting. It appears that some random band of orcs completely crushed his squad. But the ring is now lost somewhere in a river. Tough luck.
    3) Okay, back to subversive action, sabotage and deception. Yeah and biological warfare. Perfect, half of the enemy realms are gone and the other half is almost dead. And it only costed us an artificial realm that we created only to do this job? Perfect.
    4) It appears that this witch-king-guy is kinda competent, unlike literally everyone else under my rule. That is perfect. Im sure he has a bright... DARK, I meant DARK future to look forward to.
    5) Let´s join with some dragon, capture a super loaded mountain, then backstab the dragon and eliminate any enemy east of Misty mountains.
    6) I´ve never ever seen a plan go tits up THAT quickly...
    7) Anyway, let´s rebuild Mordor.
    8) Niiice, Harad and Rhun are still my faithful bitches doing anything I ask of them. Maybe I should use more men and less of those stupid orc. Those have brought me nothing but shame. Men are far more efficient... Or maybe not. The orcs may be barely useful even as a training target, but I just can´t be bothered to change my strategy again.
    9) Wow, my ring is now apparently in the hands of some Baggins of Shire. That must be a mighty lord. He fought dragons, orcs, trolls, and earned a lot of gold doing that... He was also the one who screwed me a few decades ago. But he´s quite capable, maybe I should hire him... No, Sauron hates nasty hobbitses... Sauron wants to see them... dead.
    10) My nazgul squadron was very close, but ultimately lost in a battle against a river. They didnt even scratch their enemy, and suffered a complete loss of their horses. Maybe I should upgrade them to avoid them getting into such fight ever again.
    11) Damn, it looks like that Saruman dude is not really on our side. Just pretends to be. Saruman, I´ve heard that name somewhere, where do I know him from??
    12) Okay, seems like that Saruman dude is not such a great friend with Rohan after all.
    13) AND he got his ass kicked. Now he´s off to Morgoth knows where...
    14) Oh wow, now it looks like some damned midget keeps my ring somewhere in Rohan... So that´s how they defeated Saruman. I got it. Better get rid of Gondor before they have a similar idea.
    15) Wow, capturing Osgiliath was so easy. Gondor sux.
    16) Let´s crush their capital. I´ve sent my general witch-king, and he´s got all the army and equipment he needs.
    17) Damn, he got himself flanked, and then killed by some technicality in some prophecy made by some undead elf guy.
    18) Aragorn? And he´s got the ring? Oh, so that´s how he defeated my best general. But no matter, because I still hold all the triumphs. Let´s crush Erebor and Gondor at the same time.
    19) What, they are attacking?! Well that makes my plans a whole lot easier, if Aragorn wants to just bring me the ring...
    20) What?! what spies in Cirith Ungol?! Don´t bother me with such nonsense, I´ve got a war to win...
    21) He´s got WHAT in Mount Doom??!!
    22) I hate them so much...

In the books, after Frodo puts on the Ring, we actually get a few paragraphs from Sauron's POV. He could not even imagine the possibility that someone would ever set out to destroy the Ring.
"And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the Power in Barad-dûr was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung.
From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom."

They actually made him seem like Sauron's "deadliest servant for just a few moments before some random handmaiden kills his mount and then stabs him in his nonexistent mouth.

@@origami83in the books. The reason the Witch King was killed in that moment was twofold. It technically has nothing to do with Eowyn being a woman. It was simply prophesied that he would not be killed by a man. He was killed by both a woman and a Hobbit. And that’s the key. It was Merry’s involvement that made the Witch King vulnerable.
Eowyn physically held him off for a short period of time. Witch King gets cocky bcs he thinks he’s fighting a weak man. Meanwhile unbeknownst to him a Hobbit with a magical dagger specifically designed to kill him is sneaking up behind him. Merry stabbing him effectively eliminates all the Witch Kings enchantments making him nearly invincible. Thus giving Eowyn (the primary combatant) the opportunity to deliver the killing blow.

Okay now what's kind of important to remember is that sauron is like fully thinking that eragon is the one with the ring
Like the whole point of the story is that sauron overlooks little people and is overly focused on the grandiose tales of kings and Knoebels
But in the end it is just a lowly Hobbit that defeats him while he is distracted by the king he thinks has his ring

1:10 to be fair Sauron reaching out towards Isildur makes sense once you realize he killed High King Gil-Galad of the elves by burning his face with his hand. Also Sauron probably wouldn't know about the movie version's added scene of him denying throwing the ring in the fire, because in both the movies and the books it explicitly says that Sauron doesn't believe anyone would think to destroy it, because he thinks all beings lower than him are too power hungry to resist trying to take it for themselves.
Also Sauron didn't know where the Shire was apparently, sense it didn't exist when the ring was first swiped from him, so that's why he sends black riders to go and find out where the hell it is hence why they ask "Shire....? Baggins...?"
Also the Nazgul were busy during those two thousands years. The Witch King for example in those millennia has done the following; founded the kingdom of Angmar, destroyed the Numernorian kingdom of Arnor, conquered the Gondorian city of Minas Ithil, which was hence forth renamed Minas Morgul, taunted the last king of Gondor into facing him in a one on one duel in which the kings fate is unknown. That's just the Witch King, what the other's were doing is unknown but they likely were busy doing similar things in the East and South.
Also in the books the reason the Nazgul ran away is because they thought since Frodo had been hit by the Morgul Blade it was inevitable that he would become a Nazgul and just sort of hand them the ring on command, and also they aren't immortal, one of them simply has a vague prophecy about his death.
Sauron showed those images to Pippin because at the time Sauron thought that the traitorous Saruman had captured Pippin with the one ring, and that Pippin was using the Palantir at Saruman's command to taunt Sauron into saying "look what I have" and so Sauron was essentially trying to scare Saruman into thinking that Sauron's forces are still greater and will smush him like a bug even with the ring.
You got what he was thinking while they were at the black gate kind of correct, though I may clarify that Sauron thought Aragorn had claimed the ring as an heirloom of his house and planned to wield it against him, hence his delusions of grandeur to face all of Mordor with a couple men and a wizard.
Yeah but Sauron had no clue about Frodo and Sam being in Mordor or even trying to enter Mordor until Frodo put the ring on in Mount Doom, before that he thought Frodo was some kind of scout or spy sent by the fellowship to look for weaknesses in Mordor's defenses.

But, in my opinion, Tolkien made clear what was the power of Sauron (with the ring) in battle. He was exactly two times stronger than the strongest mortal at the time - elf or man. We can confirm that because it took exactly one Gil Galad and one Elendil to tie things up and for the three to die.
But the thing is. I don't think Sauron cared about physical strength. In the movies he kind of goes to battle to show his muscles and his big mace. In the books, he's escaping the field, because his army is fucked. Gil Galad ser that, and intercept him with Elendil. Sauron is like: "god damn, guess I have to battle."
Again, he's a brilliant tactician, not a fighter.

@@Nomsynho yes. The movie, good as it is muddles certain details. For instance, why wasnt doom guarded? Well..because sauron knew no one in middle earth had the strength of will to throw the ring in. No one. Not frodo, not gandalf, not galadriel, not even himself. So why guard it? Anyone who came would simply be found and taken by the nazgul. And he did not understand why anyone would. He thought aragorn had the ring. That's why aragorn revealed himself in palantir. Sauron thought pippin was frodo, and gandalf and crew figured that if aragorn revealed himself, sauron would think aragorn took the ring from the hobbit because only someone with the ring would be crazy enough to attack mordor with such a small army. Thus sauron would send his armies to stop aragorn, leaving mordor less guarded improving the odds of Frodo's success. Sauron could not comprehend why anyone would destroy the ring.

  • @galosniper7010
    @galosniper7010 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

What y'all in the comments seem to be forgetting is that for every 4 or 5 military L Sauron took through out the timeline he had a world ending W.
After he made the one ring he dominated about 70% of all middle earth for 1500 year until Numenor intervened, and even when he was captured by Numenor (which he did willingly cuz he knew he could destroy them from the inside) he quickly begins to manipulate the King and takes control over Numenor, which was the mightiest empire ever in the works of Tolkien, it was only after he convinced Numenor to invade the blessed realm that Sauron took his first major L and lost his body due to divine intervention from God himself (and yes, he had already taken quite a few minor L'sz specially with the dwarves and elves but had ultimetly succeded in taking over middle earth so far). Not to mention that by the time of LOTR he had most of the South (Tokien's north Africa) and the Easterlings (Tolkien's middle eastern people) under his commend either by force or diplomacy. Even in the battle of the Pellenor fields (which is probably the most crushing defeat Sauron took during the events of LOTR) was won by a simple yet game changing divine intervention by Eru once again, which was clearing the sky from Sauron's dark clouds to fuck with the orcs, allthough in the movies that detail really isn't that much clear. And finally, in the books he loses by divine intervention AGAIN when Gollum trips and falls, which in the movies looks more like a result of his fight with frodo.
The movies dont really do a good job of showing how Sauron thinks, which i think is actually a good thing for the story telling of the triology, but it also kinda makes him look like an idiot.
Sauron doesnt mind taking a military defeat here and there, he loses an army? sure, he can just rebuild more, but men? elves? they cant. If you take a look at Saurons life he lost a lot more times than he won, but in the grand scheme of things it really didn't metter, for every victory middle earth had over Sauron during theese thousands of years they lost countless soldiers that cannot be replaced, unlike Sauron's orcs which he breeds like rabbits. Even when he himself is "killed" it doesnt metter, not only is he completely immortal but with the one ring he can always make a new body, might take a really long time if the ring is lost but it happens very quickly if the ring is with him. Sauron was confortable with losing battle after battle cuz he was always looking at the big picture, playing the long game, knowing he is gonna win in the end.
The reasons why he loses in LOTR are very nuanced, you can say his biggest mistake was not guarding Mt. Doom but even then Sauron was low-key right not to, he thaught no one could ever resist the willl of the ring and he was right, what he didnt count on however is in one of Tolkien's most important themes "evil always destroys itself", for Sauron himself didnt view him as evil, but as the only one fit for rule, capable of achieving ultimate order, and THAT, was the only mistake that truly defeated Sauron in the grand scheme of things, not being able to realise his own darkness, and by extension not being able to comprehend altruism and self sacrifice.

Plus, people don't understand that no one could actually throw the ring in the lava. That's why it has to happen by accident. Even the more powerful characters would fail at this because the ring corrups everyone it's what it does. Some may take longer, but they still will come under it's spell. Plus, how you gain possession of the ring really matters. If you take it by any kind of aggression or violence you've already lost.

"Uh, yes sir?" "Really, did we get any of them?" "Well, we think the Balrog got the wizard. They fell off the top of the mountain and made a pretty big boom." "And did you check?" Sauron is a Maiar, follower of the Valar, Morgoth, and has spent thousands of years honing his manipulation skills to the point that even thinking that you want to destroy your enemy will tempt you to give him more power over you. The timeline and plot is MASSIVELY compressed, but the wandering around moping and feeling sorry for himself, his considering going good for five seconds before fully committing to the Dark Lord bit, and the storyline of his manipulating the Elves into creating the Rings is about as accurate as a book-to-tv/film adaptation typically gets. You see a lot of people saying they watch entirely for Sauron, and part of it is the actor’s portrayal, but I think a BIG factor is the fact that out of everything, his story and character most closely follows Tolkien’s works (even though the dialogue and individual events feel like they were written by AI). Staying true (ish) to the writings of one of the most beloved storytellers of the 20th century and it works!? Imagine that!

To be fair, If I was (movie) Sauron, a Maiar spirit in a BIG metal body, who could make dozens of soldiers fly with a single swing. Crushing a royal with a "bare" hand sounds kinda hardcore. (if he succeeded) so why NOT be a bit theatrical?
"I crushed lineages of Kings with my barehands."
    "Sir, that was one time"
"SILENCE! It was epic! Now, sing again of my victory!"

My guess is that Sauron was planning on lifting Isildur up for the whole army to see (which is why he was reaching out towards him), then he was gonna bash him with the mace, which would likely take the fight out of the rest of the army.
He didn’t want to just beat Isildur, he wanted to make a show of it.

Something very important from Sauron of the books are two very important things what explain how Sauron was defeated:
-Sauron, a prideful being, and only consider those who he thinks are "powerfull", like Aragorn and Gandalf. Case in point he does not bother to even know the name of the Hobbits
-Sauron, a being obsesed with power, could NOT conceive the possibility that someone might want to destroy the One ring, rather than use
This are the two things Eru, the God of LotR , and Gandalf used agaisnt Sauron. The entire Trilogy was a giant goose chase game masked as a race agaisnt time.

I’d imagine Sauron would be so happy that he just has to stop by hobbiton to get the ring and not a whole dungeon under an entire kingdom. Just the easiest grab ever… and ur own dark paladins cannot catch them and lose them. And now u have to find them… and they still keep getting away… and eventually a king gets it… and he goes to war with u… and ur in ur tower waiting for ur army to overwhelm them… and then he succumbs to the ring and hol on sec u turn around and THE HOBBIT HAS IT AGAIN AND IS LITERALLY INSIDE MT DOOM
Btw this is book Sauron. He’s alive, he came back as a necromancer and died again and returned again but knows a hobbit bilbo found it and took it from a crackhead. And Sauron just sits in his tower, prob in terrible shape, just waiting for the ring to make its way to him. And he thought Aragorn had the ring after seeing him in the palantir

It's actualy thought Sauron never even knew the shire existed, and in fact, many didn't know the shire existed. Sauron may have known the lands by a different name, long before hobbits inhabited it, so he was actually fumbling around in the dark. He probably didn't even know hobbits were a race of halflings, and may have just assumed that the ring-bearer was some normal dude before learning of hobbits.

You know what the power of Sauron was? Propaganda. He created a mythical marketing campaign. He was not all that. The ring was not so all powerful as it seemed . He was beaten by Gil Galad and Elendil, an elf and an old man, while he WAS wearing the One Ring! yep, he killed both of them, but that was his limit, an even king with diminished powers because the curse of morgoth over middle earth, and a retired sailor with a shine blade that he broke.

A lot have been cut from the opening battle due to time constraints. In the original script Sauron used telekinesis to lift Gil-Galad in the air (with the reaching out gesture) and then burst him into flames. Then he killed Elendil and finally went for the same telekinesis move on Isildur... who surprised him by cutting of his fingers with the broken Narsil.
In the books Sauron is defeated in combat by Gil-Galad, Elendil and Isildur. With only Isildur surviving the fight and taking the ring from Sauron's dead body.
As the destruction of the ring goes... NO ONE not Isildur, Elrond, Frodo or Golum could ever destroy the ring. The One Ring has simple too much influence over its wielder to allow its own destruction. Ring was literally destroyed by the act of God (Eru-Ilúvatar the same God who brought Gandalf back) by making Golum fall into the lava.
You may not like it... but that's how Tolkien wrote it.

A minor nitpick: Sauron is defeated (or "brought down") by Elendil and Gil-Galad, not Isildur, although Sauron isn't "dead" at that point. When Isildur cuts the ring from his hand with the hilt-shard of Narsil he is vaquished and his spirit flees his body - so it isn't that far from what happens in the film, except that in the book Sauron is fallen and Isildur standing rather than the other way round, the method to "kill" Sauron was the same, namely removing the ring from his hand

I've been saying this for years. As powerful as Sauron is, especially in the context of Middle-Earth by the late Third Age, the truth is, he has been the Sideshow Bob stepping on rakes for thousands of years. He is like an errant late 20th century punk, raging against the powers that be. I've done the same thought exercise (except from the First Age onward) and seeing exactly how many times Sauron had been messed around by fate itself. It ultimately comes down to the nature of how the Free Peoples were supposed to win their victory over Sauron.
If you think about it, Eru could descend at any time he so felt like, and crushingly defeat Sauron without even trying. Maybe he could do it with a single thought or word. A gesture. Anything, it doesn't particularly matter. Sauron can't defeat Eru. In a way, Sauron is like rebellious son. The Lucifer comparison is often made. I'd say Lucifer was Melkor, but Sauron is the greatest acolyte of Melkor.
I'm aware that the claim that Sauron is the most powerful of the Maiar, is challenged. He has been defeated before (though these seem to be Maiar with comparable power to Sauron, where Sauron's own is moot if he has become weakened by recent defeat) *Eönwë* or *Ilmarë* could be stronger from a _certain point of view_ and it's fair to say Eönwë was likely the best _fighter_ of the Maiar. And just as Melkor feared Tulkas (the best fighter of the Valar), Sauron likely feared Eönwë. But perhaps just as Tulkas was not necessarily the greatest of the Valar, the same could be said of the greatest fighter of the Maiar (?) On paper, it can be debated this or that way. In context, Sauron had just survived the War of Wrath and wasn't necessarily about to be in the best form to get into an all out fight with Eönwë. Sauron's overall powers were generally deemed greater.
I'm seeing comments here dismissing Sauron's power as lesser because of defeats, though these all ought to be contextualised. Yes, Elendil and Gil-galad defeated him (together, sacrificing themselves in the process) Yes, Huan the Hound of Valinor (a great wolfhound magically imbued with godly strength, one of the Vala Oromë's hunting dogs (albeit originally belonging to Celegorm, one of the Sons of Fëanor -- also specifically given prophetic purpose (in direct significance to one of Sauron's forms; that of a great Werewolf)
People are saying a Dog beat Sauron like that's some small thing. In all fairness to Sauron, Huan was a super-powered wolfhound the size of a horse, given god powers and Eowyn-style purpose via prophecy (in her case, to defeat the Witch-King, in Sauron's case, to defeat the greatest Werewolf aka Sauron's Werewolf form) Huan was quite literally, purposefully fated to defeat Sauron (another rake, right in Sideshow Sauron's face)
If the Valar and Eru were 'miffed' (to put it mildly) at Fëanor and Fingolfin of the Noldorin, going into Middle-Earth against their wishes, and with this causing a cascade of misfortunes for the Eldar involved, playing out over several thousand years, then _what do you think they think about Sauron the Deceiver_ whom goes around supporting Melkor, turning into werewolf form and serpent form and all kinds of other forms? What level of FUBAR bad luck do you think the powers that be had in store for Sauron? It was bad, very bad. Sauron was basically on the naughty list forever, no backsies and was doomed to a fate, _worse than_ death (and let's face it, aspects of Sauron had 'died' many times. Huan did, yes, 'kick Sauron's ass' but that was still a tough fight (and Huan still had some help from Lúthien's magic)
That said, in all fairness, in turn, to Huan, he didn't just fight Sauron at Tol-in-Gaurhoth (the clue is in the meaning of the name of that dread-fortress that used to be a nice place; the Isle of Werewolves) Well, he and Lúthien's walked right in there. Huan (with help from Lúthien's magic) defeated _every single one_ of Sauron's werewolves. Absolutely destroying all of them. How many that is, is unknown. It's also unclear if any Orcs were present but I guess Orcs wouldn't exactly be in their element in a fortress garrisoned by a bunch of Werewolves. My guess would be, Sauron could walk amongst them but Orcs were not exactly safe from them. Huan just absolutely wiped out all the Werewolves _then_ took on Sauron whom transformed into the most terrifying Werewolf in the world (and still won)
Before Huan defeated Sauron in giant Werewolf form, he'd already defeated Draugluin, the _First_ Werewolf. The First Age was a bit of a mood or phase for Sauron, as he was into sticking bad spirits into various subjects and seeing what happened. He was something of an experimenter of cruel ways and making new monsters. Sort of like a mad scientist or a general testing new weapons of war for Melkor. Draugluin was one of Sauron's experiments essentially. One of his 'creations'. A nightmare itself, of course. Huan still slew Draugluin, the grandsire of all Werewolves ever in Tolkien (and possibly also all the Wargs, too) Sauron's Werewolf phase was very much in evidence in the First Age and he was full on fiending at Tol-in-Gaurhoth. That which had once been Tol Sirion, an Elven fortress, was overrun by Sauron and Draugluin, and then he got to work.
Basically, Huan and Lúthien's with her magic, completely defeated the entire Werewolf horde at Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Sauron fled. This would not be the last time Sauron ran away, or the last time he got defeated. Again, this _still_ doesn't mean he isn't the greatest of the Maiar by raw power (especially looking at his origins) However, like Melkor, he frittered away his power in a sense, and became weaker. In Sauron's case, that was very pronounced after he lost his fair form Annatar, following the events of the Akallabeth near the end of the Late Second Age (the Downfall of Númenor) Sauron had allowed for that to be the case. It was the one way for Sauron to defeat Númenor.
Sauron the Super Sigma had accepted he simply could not defeat Númenor at warfare (Mordor stood zero chance against the true might of a united Númenor, even _without_ all those Elves helping, so Sauron changed his strategy, allowing himself to be captured and then using his manipulation skills to worm his way into arrogant Ar-Pharazon's ear; whom had already lost the plot ego wise after Sauron - a demi-god - was seen to openly kneel in surrender to him inside Mordor) There was simply nothing Sauron could do to stop the grand armies of Númenor it simply wasn't a contest at that point.
[part 1/2; part 2 in reply below]

    • @ThePalaeontologist
      @ThePalaeontologist 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

[2/2] Sauron pivoted to subvert Númenor on a political and societal level, and that was the end of that, really. The price was Sauron's corporeal form as Annatar, which he could _never_ take on again. He was a broken, desperate thing, resorting to that to sabotage Númenor and to reduce himself to imbuing oversized armour to compensate for his considerable loss. And the Rings of Power were that as well, compensation and improvement of the powers he had lost and the powers he still had, like focusing lenses to exert his will over the peoples of Middle-Earth. Viewing it from the perspective of the Valar, what Sauron was doing was both insane, and ultimately, pathetic. Still a massive problem for the mortals and even the immortals still fighting him in the Second and Third Ages (especially the latter), though he was still basically resorting to lesser and lesser gains at terrible cost.
Strategically, Sauron's grasp of war is also questionable, as in spite of thousands of years of wars, he seems spectacularly, uncannily unfortunate in war (almost as if he was never meant to win, hmmm) The sum total of his behaviour is essentially that of a destructive, tyrannical monster that got less and less powerful over time. Compared to mortals, he was still terrifying even when weakened. But the fact Gandalf the Grey drove the Necromancer (Sauron in hiding) from Dol Guldur _alone_ that time, shows that he really had fallen from grace (no offence to Gandalf, whom is still my favourite character of all)
The simple fact was, Sauron was the most powerful of the Maiar (originally) Whether he still was at the end of the First Age, when Eönwë was sent to apprehend him, is unclear. We can't really judge Sauron in that moment for being a bit unwilling to get into a duel with Eönwë. Huan was Sauron's Werewolf form's nemesis by prophecy. Carcharoth, the greatest wolf ever (besides Sauron's shapeshifted Werewolf form) was to be mutually mortally wounded with Huan, and that was while Huan had help from Beren and Mablung etc. The implication could be that if Sauron wasn't cursed to lose that fight in his Werewolf form, then he could have otherwise slain Huan.
As much as Huan is cool and everything, I think that makes sense. If not for being granted certain powers, then Huan would just be a very large wolfhound the size of a horse (incredible, yes, but still fighting daemonic fallen angel Sauron in giant Werewolf form; it was his high intelligence, literally at talking Dog level (although he was only allowed to talk three times before he died) Morgoth/Melkor _made_ Carcharoth stronger as the greatest of Draugluin's offspring, to be some predestined monster to defeat Huan; Carcharoth, literally becoming what he did, simply because Melkor wanted him to destroy
Another idea I have seen is that Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs is the most powerful Maiar, but I think that is absolutely not true at all, and there is zero evidence for making such a claim. Ecthelion of the Fountain of Gondolin, defeated Gothmog, and convincingly. It cost him his life to do it, but there you go. Could Ecthelion defeat peak Sauron? Doubt it. Sauron from the Dagorlad Plain? Doubt it but maybe.
How does Ecthelion of the Fountain, stood in his own city, guarding that fountain, compare to Elendil and Gil-galad (combined or separately) if suddenly sent to the Late Second Age and from Gondolin to Dagorlad Plain or the slopes of Mount Doom otherwise? Who knows. It's not like there is a quantifiable system in place to see, dare I say, exact 'power levels'. It would be unimaginable for a Hobbit to slay Sauron in combat, though a Hobbit did defeat Sauron in the end. Two Hobbits. And Gollum, technically. But there you go.
I personally think giga-chad Eönwë would be a sight to behold, as he duelled Sauron (if both were at full-strength) Sauron's power isn't all about combat though, so Eönwë (whom is still as powerful as he ever was, because good guys don't finish last in Tolkien, mostly anyway) He could probably defeat Sauron throughout most of Middle-Earth history. I am not sure that if Sauron was geared up for a fight and full-empowered, that he would be so easily defeated. On paper, the herald and fighting champion of Manwë, would overwhelm Sauron. Sauron whom is more like an all rounder, inventor, sorcerer and warlock. A tyrant and a deceiver. He's more of a politician, in those regards. Politician, meets inventor.
Sauron is likely more powerful and better than Eönwë at a broader range of things. Could Sauron at his best defeat Gothmog? Probably. Could Sauron ever defeat Ungoliant? No. But if a flock of Balrogs can scare even the superpowered form of Ungoliant off, then Sauron could at least be strong enough to hold his own against her for a while, like any of the Balrogs in the line of thought. If Gandalf the Grey can defeat Durin's Bane in a battle that takes 8 days for Gandalf to win (at the cost of his own life) then Sauron at his best would easily defeat Durin's Bane and do so without dying. This makes sense. What doesn't make sense, is the entirety of the Rings of Power series.
