    To all our “old” lesbians out there, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being the one group of people who helped my friends & their friends back during the AIDS Epidemic (late 1980s/early 1990s) when no one else would!!! I would say 95% of “young” LGBTQ people have no idea that during the peak of the AIDS Epidemic, nurses and doctors REFUSED to provide healthcare for gay men dying of AIDS…but our amazing lesbians stepped up and gave them the love and attention they needed while some of them recovered, but more importantly when most of them died. My appearance belies my actual age, but being in my 50s, I remember how scary it was back then, and how straight ppl would spread lies about us gay men and I’m just thankful the internet wouldn’t really become popular for another decade ‘cause misinformation spreads like wildfire on here.
    These “old” lesbians will always be the ultimate queens to me ‘cause they’re just cut from a special cloth…they’ll always have the utmost respect from this “old” gay! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 Lotsa love and aloha from Honolulu! 😄🤙🏽❤️🌈😓

Take all of it in ‘cause it all shapes who we are, and strife only holds us back if YOU allow it to do so…YOU always have the option to to use strife to elevate yourself.

    I'm trans and I absolutely agree with that whole: don't give older queer people shit for missing a pronoun or not using the most modern language, for fuck's sake. I feel compelled to answer "same" here too... But yeah, I grew up mostly without internalised homophobia, so that when I did get my first crush last year I wasn't in denial. I always had the "My sexuality? We'll see." mentality. And eventhough I'm asexual and (so) never had crushes on TV characters like people seem to have, I just always knew I was gay? Growing up I wanted short hair and I wore t-shirts, jeans and never pink.

      If there were more 'older' lesbians as TH-camrs, I feel like they could go viral with all the love, hope, and encouragement they could give to everyone including those who've lost or still lose families, friends, and communities for whatever reason. Plus, it would help remind people that even though the Trans movement is going through these issues now, 40-50 years later, we might just have a more accepting society as long as we continue being true to ourselves and supporting those who need it.

    Right off the bat her first point really made me see stuff. We always talk about history of repressed minority groups but one that we don't talk about too much is the history of LGBTQ groups. We are really focused on the present, WHICH IS GREAT, but I think we should also put some time to look at what people back in the day had to go through. That almost means being considerate for those struggles and knowledgeable about them

    • @arijeanz
      @arijeanz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      i also think the lgbt community is really divided now, in my experience. we are hyper focused on labeling and boxing. most of the accounts I've seen or heard of older lgbt people give off an air of stronger unity within the community.

    • @charlie8432
      @charlie8432 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@arijeanz it is really frustrating to see tbh. i understand the value of labels/words to truly understand your own and others' experiences... and at the same time, focusing on that too much can really take away from the fact that being lgbtqia+/queer is still not widely accepted let alone protected. i grew up during the time that the internet got real big on Discourse(tm) and i found that it's really easy for younger people (25 and younger) to get REALLY caught up in the minutia of it all because they have (understandably) very little personal experience just trying to find others like them and survive in the world. the internet is a blessing and a curse. living in a small conservative town, i likely never would've learned the labels that are comfortable for me; thanks to the internet, i did! but i've also seen how hive minds work and it's insanely sad the division & ignorance it perpetuates

I'm from a young queer generation but i spent most of my formative years without being on social media, in a small town, knowing all the other queer people personally and being able to count them on two hands. this made my experience be more about connecting with the few other queer individuals i knew instead of trying to label myself perfectly. i was really uneducated about trans issues and intersectionality and things like that but at least i grew to learn all that with time. me and all the other queer people in my town were very different but we all stuck together and stood up for each other when people said nasty things about us. that was my first experience of being in the lgbt community and it really shaped me

It forever changed my view on the community though, and gave me a deeper respect and understanding of older LGBT+ people that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. i think that being older and having had it harder doesn't mean that you should be exempt from things like respecting people's pronouns. yeah, people shouldn't attack her and other people for messing up once, but she is gay, she isn't trans, and being misgendered is a thing trans people had to fight against for so long... and still do! and an old lesbian being mad about it doesn't make things better.
      gay people still have it better that trans people in many cases and having fought for gay people's rights doesn't mean you can't be wrong about stuff that doesn't apply to you. i respect her for being so brave and doing so much when it comes to gay rights, but i don't think we should be okay with people messing up people's pronouns because they "had it rough". like... she had it rough so she thinks that other people are wrong when they ask her to not make things harder for them?
      sorry if it's chaotic, i just get annoyed with that kind of logic, "i had it rought and i made some things easier for you so you should be thankful and I should be exempt from criticism. otherwise you're just an ungrateful and entitled baby gay" lol

I think this reflects an unfair societal standard that women or more femme people are supposed to be hairless? I've struggled a lot with my body hair in the past and have come to love it and let it grow untamed! And my girlfriend adores it. Let's try to promote body hair neutrality. It's not something to be afraid or ashamed of, it's totally natural and can even protect us against STD's (not pubic lice though hehe). Bella reminds me of my aunties. I was blessed to grow up with a boomer lesbian aunt, who has been out since the early 70s, and her gaggle of lifelong friends. I was even at the wedding of two of them as a baby! They've taught me so much about life and relationships, and were a comforting influence while I was coming out and learning to be comfortable in my skin. Go find an older lesbian and give them a hug!

    with all due respect, you can 100% appreciate and understand the history of where queer culture was, and where it is now, and *still* care, correct, be hurt, etc etc w.e, towards pronouns. You are NEVER too old to learn. (unless you literally can't, i.e. something like dementia)
    If someone is using the wrong pronoun on purpose, deadnaming, w.e it does not matter how old they are. they don't automatically "get a pass".

    (im sorry I wrote such a long comment) I agree that more young lgbt people should educate themselves on our history, and I am really grateful for a lot of the things we have now that older gays didn't/ had a harder time with. however, its so frustrating when you try to talk about your struggle with others in the community and people just brush it off because you're younger. lgbt people still get kicked out/ abused/ killed/ threatened/ bullied. good representation is barely starting to appear and there is still lots of pushback. even just unsupportive families raise the risk of suicide soo much higher. when you try to talk about people in those situations (or even more simple things like pronouns) and get told that you couldn't possibly struggle because it used to be worse, it's so invalidating. she isn't trans so she doesn't understand how transphobia feels. her struggle doesn't negate anyone else's. things being better doesn't mean we're done and it's all perfect now.
    there is a point where younger kids can be nitpicky and uneducated but it's older gays' job to help guide/ educate the younger ones. when cishet people turn their backs on them WE are supposed to help show them that there are people who share their struggles, or at the very least are willing to be there for and help them. I'm almost 20 now so I'm still pretty young but I definitely have a different experience than kids younger than me. that doesn't mean they cant struggle though. someone always has to worse but the 1st person in that line still has issues. it's not a pissing contest.
    I still remember looking up to this one gay family member and trying to tell them about some experiences that have in all honestly, changed me and my mental health for the rest of my life. all he had to say was that he had it worse and that he's never seen _______ or ______ happen to me. also, that hed take me to a gay bar when I'm 21. since I figured it out when I was 11 or 12, he was "the older gay" that I looked up to and it really fucked me up for him to just brush it off like that. all I needed was reassurance and support from someone in the community. if I had it "so easy" then why were my lgbt friends and I trying to talk each other out of suicide in middle school? why was I shamed and bullied? why did my parents make me swear on the bible and force me into the church? why did I try and force myself to act straight for years in fear of getting ostracized/ bullied worse? Why did I fear being kicked out, like some people I know were? why are gay bars still set on fire, and trans people especially (kids included) still being killed? wlw sexualized and assaulted?
    yes, general public opinion in a few countries has improved a lot, but these things STILL HAPPEN. I was alive when a lot of these protections were made (and some, taken away). I was 13/14 when gay marriage was legalized, aka a cognizant person. even shit like misgendering people and anti-gay laws in schools is invalidating and hurting lgbt kids. people make mistakes and say the wrong pronouns. people are uneducated. I don't think genuine mistakes should be shamed, and it is annoying when people focus on small issues. still, invalidating younger people's experiences as a whole is wrong and helping nobody.
    appreciating what we have doesn't mean negating all struggles that young lgbt people still face.
