I was really scared to get my thumb involved because it looked like a lot of time and effort. This lesson got me playing some cool stuff immediately - now I can't stop doing it! There are a lot of great shredders, screamers and arpeggiators (?) on TH-cam but I always thought the creativity and flair of a great guitarist comes out when they're bopping in and out between chords like this. Gentleman!

True fact: Hendrix actually appropriated this rhythm guitar style from Curtis Mayfield. In the early to mid 60's it was this style that made Hendrix more employable for live gigs and session work. Hope this helps.

Obviously, if you want to get heavy with this style.....you should go back & check out where Hendrix himself got that style from. He was a lover of the Soul/Gospel & R&B style of playing that people like Curtis Mayfield ,Bobby Womack,Pops Staples & Steve Cropper played. Hendrix was a master at this & surely put his own mark on it......but that is where this style originated. The same style that folks like John Frusciante & John Mayer copped from Hendrix.....Hendrix copped from these older cats. ;-)

where can I learn about those key chord tones the route and 5th?.. I know the pentatonic scale but it just sound repetitive with nothing really behind it. like I know the positions but I don't know how to make them work.. any help?

I have a cover of "who knows" by the Band of Gypsys on my page - if you checked it out and commented on it I would probably crap my pants. One of my favorite guitar video and the most "knowledgest" about Jimi style PapastachePop tnx just one question can you right the chord progression that you use in the last part of the video?
This style of play is exactly what I want to be doing - but it infuriates me that my hammer on finger mutes the previously strummed chord, meaning it sounds miserable and amateur when it should be harmonic and beautiful. Cant seem to play it with the rounded finger. Practice makes perfect or is there a tip out there that would help? IE. when i was learning barre chords and they sucked especially an F chord, I was told to squeeze my tricep to get the angle and strength which really helped. Any ideas? Great video by the way, I am going to explore the different chord shape fingerings tonight, the barre chord doesn't seem to be working - maybe the thumb over the F shape will be better.
8:37 I really can't bar the first 2 strings with my index! The e string became muted if i try to keep my thumb on the 6th string. Any good suggests? Thanks

fantastic lesson. As someone who's been playing for a couple of years and is trying to start doing more than just learning songs, this is just what i need. This and your hard rock rhythm lesson mean I can actually just jam by myself and have it sound interesting and like i can actually play rather than just boring basic chord progressions.that someone who just picked up the guitar could play. Hendrix ‘appropriated’ nothing. He had many influences, which he didn’t hide, but created his own style. His playing is distinct. Anyone can hear that
