The title means “Reminiscence from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni”. Liszt here is transcribing passages from Don Giovanni to the piano. He did the same with Bellini’s Norma.
I’ve got to say Lang Lang is an astounding technician 😭 I don’t agree with all his interpretations but this one has always struck me as truly fantastic despite the theatrics
on its own this interpretation is indeed outstanding but comparing it to for example okada's rendition really shows how many passages he completely rushes through or skips, its so radical but it works i guess
@@nandovancreij personally I think lang lang plays all the sections very poetically maybe rushing some sections but the same can be said towards Okada that he rushed sections aswell.
The themes from the opera that I recognize are "La ci darem la mano" (the most famous part of Don Giovanni) and "Fin ch'han dal vino' (the champagne aria). And something from the overture in the beginning too You should definitely react to Don Giovanni, it's like the best opera ever written
A fun piece based on a great opera by Mozart, you should check out "Là ci darem la mano", the tune Liszt uses as a theme and variations at 4:51 as well as the Final scene, which includes a demonic statue and the protagonist being dragged to hell for his actions, it's wild! And some of the best music Mozart ever wrote.
I can't help but every time I hear "Là ci darem la mano" (a duet from Don Giovanni), even in the Liszt arrangement, I must think of Monty Python's lumberjack song.
Here my recommendation on more Liszt music to react: Réminiscences de Robert le Diable, S.413 Réminiscences de Lucrezia Borgia. S.400 Réminiscences des Huguenots, S.412iii Fantasie sur des motifs favoris de I'opera de Bellini 'La sonnambula', S.393 Grande fantaisie sur des motifs de Niobe, S419 Sonata in B Minor, S.178 Mephisto Waltz No. 2, S. 515 Tannháuser Overture, S.442 Hungarian Rhapsody No.9 'Pesther Karneval', S.244 Hexaméron, Morceau de concert, S.392 Grosse Konzertfantasie über spanische Weisen, S. 253
I'd like to request a reaction to "An American in Paris". Not the movie, the piece written by Gershwin. It's genuinely a masterpiece on all levels. I have some interpretations that I prefer over others, but I won't police what you should watch
Dude- you should listen to the Chopin Cello Sonata in G minor!! He only wrote one, but it's great imo! One of my favourite pieces of music as a Cellist :)
2 requests I'm certain you'd love : both are by composer CLAUS OGERMANN . He is very well known in the music industry. Please go to his cd album -- 'Symphonic Dances / Some Times ( Ballet )' performed by the New York Studio Symphony Orchestra , and listen to the Symphonic Dances piece. ••••••••••• The next one , from the cd album 'Claus Ogermann / Two Concertos'. The whole album is liquid gold. His music is warm , sophisticated , and builds a corridor directly to your heart. This album is the one i cherish the most. Mr. Ogermann died year 2016 at age 85.
In terms of technical difficulty of this piece compared to other Liszt pieces, this one probably ranks top 5. There are only few other pieces I can think of, that can match this level of virtuosity (only some of the Beethoven Symphony transcriptions like the 7th, 3rd and 9th or the spanish fantasy) Lang Lang hat richtig rasiert Bruder :)
Idk about top 5 since there is also symphony fantastique transcription and also Reminiscences de Lucrezia Borgia which is considered to be the hardest of the Reminiscences
@@skillbomb8823 I see your point, Hamelin once said that the Tannhäuser overture transcription would be "basically unplayable". There is an absolutely stunning performance by Cziffra on yt: th-cam.com/video/13zFjZ7OLDw/w-d-xo.html. Liszt is such an underrated composer imo, so many incredible works. Its just unfair to say Liszt is just about showing off without sense of musicality.
I dont think Mozart ever imagined that a sadistic demonic composer would produce this hellish cascade out of his cherished masterpiece….Pretty sure he would at least be impressed by the firework virtuosity
@@kasajizo8963 Yeah I mean the “Liszt treatment” is fun to hear every once in a while. Fun and pretty creative at times, i find him better when he works with a given theme(s), like in this case, rather than original thematic material.( exception for his B minor Sonata which is stunning)
I have never refused to listen to Liszt, but I am yet to hear anything that moves me. The inclusion of the Mozart aria and the variations were the only cool part. Otherwise it's all very pedantic. His transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies are fun to perform. There's also the story about him and Wagner getting drunk and dancing to Beethoven's symphonies!

Go view Lang Lang playing Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy. I believe even Schubert considered it unplayable except by a select few virtuosi.

Have you listened to the Prokofiev Toccata?
He adds a lot of extra notes that aren’t in the original arrangement. But pretty fun to listen to.
