I've read that the engines used for the Mig-25 were originally designed as single use units intended for cruise missile application. The Mig-25 used the Tumansky R-15 engines which were originally intended for the unsuccessful Tupolev TU-121 cruise missile as it was the most powerful engine available that could be used in the Mig-25 design. As such these engines would be scrapped after each flight to Mach 3.2. During the era the Mig-25 was being designed the Soviet's resources were greatly limited as to what steels/alloys could be procured/produced. The Mig-25 with all it's short-comings is still a bruiser of an aircraft. Great content GS, and a big thank you to 4NVIL for piloting the aggressor.
If I recall correctly, the Foxbat had the largest engines ever fitted to a fighter jet (certainly until fairly recently at least). The Turmansky R11s were monsters.

Yep, western intelligence absolutely freaked out when they started seeing images of it - though they did think it was built from titanium as an incredibly fast and manoeuvrable fighter with crazy power. But it was actually designed to intercept supersonic nuclear bombers, was super heavy, made from steel and while it was crazy fast it couldn't go full speed for more than a couple minutes without destroying the engines
A common practice for Soviet and American interceptor aircraft was to fire both heat-seeking and radar-guided missiles in tandem to increase the likelihood of a kill. The F-102 and F-106 did it with their Falcon missiles which came in both varieties. The Soviets also did it with their interceptors like the Su-15, Tu-128, and MiG-25.
I understood that Soviet practice was to shoot an active radar seeker missile and an IR seeker missile at the same time, as counter radar manoeuvres allowed the heat seeker to lock on. Certainly that was intercept procedure. That might have been interesting in this fight.
Note its semi-active radar and IR missile. Its kind of a weird strategy tho, considering the semi-active missile has more range, so it would be a waste to shot the IR first.
@termitreter6545 the idea is them going defensive from the pings from the radar missiles would show their engines heat and cause it to track. After I'd assume they'd defend themselves and possibly break lock. When the bandit turns to re-engage they have a silent missile to the face

From a comparison standpoint, I'd like to an F-4 Phantom vs. the F-15C armed with Sparrows. Just to show how much of an improvement the Eagles radar was vs. the Phantoms.
I know some people say the su 27 is the f15s nemesis but in reality it’s the fox at, the f15 was literally made to combat to revolutionary foxbat, also they are so similar which is why I love these videos between two nemesis
Gotta' luv the Foxbat and the myth's surrounding it - the west thought it a super fast mysterious killer, but when Viktor Belenko defected with a Mig 25, crash landing on a small airport in Japan, it was found to be a 'sledgehammer to crack a nut', a crude missile. The thing could fly so fast, but destroyed engines and the leading edges melted because the Russians could not afford the alloys to battle the heat generated at speed. Yet, still my personnal favourite Mig
They saw the design and thought the large wings meant it was a fighter, then got scared when they saw the speeds it could reach. Then they realised it was so heavy that the large wings were needed just to get off the ground
Heard that once or twice U2 pilots saw Mig-25's appear in visual range on intercepts but at that altitude their control surfaces hardly did anything at all so they were like unguided missiles.
The scary foxbat if 1973 flew 100,000 ft at mach 3 with only cameras on board. Upon landing the big turnanski engines had to be scrapped....but u can imagine the west shat them selves

Very good match up GS, good fight. Like to see you fly the FOXBAT next time. Should be a Mach 2+ launch of the R-40 from 65,000ft. The IR version, the R-40T, is a hypersonic missile at altitude and was the biggest threat for the SR-71. When launched from a Mach2+, 60,000ft+ FOXBAT chasing a Blackbird, the Mach 6 R-40T has an overtake of Mach 2-3 on the Blackbird. Next mission, double or triple the take off distance between the Eagle and the FOXBAT, giving more time to reach proper cruising altitude for the FOXBAT. Watched an interview with Eagle pilot "Disco". He had the Eagle to Mach 2.35 at 30,000 ft with 8 missiles and a centerline tank. I've always said the high Mach/Altitude performance data in DCS are bunk.
I’d imagine this is every real Eagle drivers dream. This exact scenario. Having listened to the Fighter Pilot Podcast for years, those actual fighter pilots would ask for exactly this scenario.
I'm fairly confident that the F15 not being shot down was due to the excellent training of the US and Allied pilots as well as the superiority of the aircraft in its era of operation.
One BIG factor that I haven't heard you mention is, "Pilot Training." I hope American fighter jocks, don't become too dependent on tech, and not keep their pilot skills sharp. That's one big reason for the American fighter pilot success rate. They are constantly training! Even their battles become teaching aids!
I am fairly sure that some pencil pusher would complain that you used a perfectly good missile to shoot down an opposition fighter that was already gunned down. We are talking about million dollar missiles if you believe the Pentagon.Good video anyway, loved it.
GS, is there a Foxbat module you can fly in DCS? If so, I think the most interesting video you could make is actually flying the Iraqi Foxbats that almost shot down the F-15, that was a work of art and had a slight chance of succeeding. Playing the underdog seems more interesting, and it would be interesting to see if you can pull it off!

The Mig 25 is an interceptor and not a battlefield fighter, but it can outrun a missile fired at it. I talked to the former Mig 25 pilots, he told a story that in the 80s they did a trick, removed the weapons from the Mig 25, and removed the engine power limiters. And the mig 25 caught up with the American SR 71, which was flying along the southern border of the USSR. This is approximately a speed of 3300-3500km per hour. After that, the Americans stopped flying on this route.

Even though, they wait about 10 minutes to let fuselage cool enough. Thats all because at such speed plane was so heated, that canopy just stuck with fuselage and refuses to open in the ground
That's my girl. I've not been able to confirm it, so absolutely take this with a grain of salt; The F15 Streak Eagle was capable of Mach 3 however, at those speeds apparently the windscreen started to warp/bow. The windscreen is comprised of Poly-carbonate over an inch thick.

Man I bet you would make for a Badass Raptor Pilot or any kinda Pilot cause you use Tactics so well, and use the Aircraft you are in to its strengths while forcing the other plane to fly to its weakness. You are extremely good at that. You also know how to move an Aircraft Around while still dealing with everything inside the cockpit! It just seems Natural to you and I know you have been doing this for a long time now so I understand it is not like you could just hop into a F-15 Cockpit and take her out and bring her home by yourself. It just seems like if you had done that you would've been really good at it...

@@Generic_Name_1-1 The "launched out of envelope" is a real, but rarely discussed issue. We have to understand that warfighters had little experience in AA missile tactics. In fact, almost all of the tactics GS uses came out of the post-Vietnam analyses that lead to Red Flag and Top Gun.
I love the story of how the Foxbat terrified the American military just by the way it looked, convincing intel specialists that it was an extremely capable dog fighter. Years later, a fox bat pilot defected and landed his jet in Japan, giving America the opportunity to study it and realizing it was nothing but a super fast brick that would fall apart if it tried going max speed. So in the end, the eagle was designed to fight a boogie man that never existed.
The interesting thing about these fights is that they might be closer to reality than the high tech stuff, because the numbers are less classified because it is old tech, so you might get a more accurate representation in the simulation.

This is the first video I've seen you do a fight that starts in BVR and actually make it to the merge, let alone end with a gun kill. That was awesome

Yes, IR missile first otherwise the IR would track the heat from the radar missile.

The Flanker and Fulcrum were the counters, MiG-31 was a continuation of the Foxbat programme and would eventually become the SR-71 counter.
