- 2024 Topps Chrome is almost here! In this video we break down our thoughts on 2024 Topps Chrome. We discuss the rookies, number of players on the set increasing, parallels to target, and much more!
One thing i appreciate about your show is that you encourage the audience to be smart with their money.
Chris here - we try! And to be honest, we’re also talking to ourselves at the same!
Jeff here: trying to help others avoid my past mistakes! 😂
best part about chrome cards is that the tears wipe right off when you get a skunk box 😂
If that fails, there's always Kurt's juice
Chris here - yep! And something else if you actually I’ll something huge!

Hell no. Blasters at $40 online presale. There is no value in that and hobby went up to $190 plus tax upon release. I'm out on buying any wax of it. They added more parallels and as Phil said over 150 different autographs which dilutes things even further. I'd buy singles in off season when prices drop and maybe an MVP buyback lot if priced fairly. Thanks for sharing
Chris here - exactly the right move
Brown Rectalfractor made me LOL!

“Better be reaking of perfume and covered in glitter” 😆 Chris is hilarious
🍻🍻🍻
You are all right - Singles is the way to go. I am buying 3-5 copies of the Players I like. I will watch Breaks to see if there are any Photos I really like…get 3-5 Serial Numbered of a handful of RCs is good enough given the Production Runs. Great video - Topps Chrome is still a must own! 🤓⚾️
Chris here - sounds good to me and thanks for watching!
Love THIS video. I learn something new, everyday, with your videos! 👍🇺🇸
Thanks for watching!
I hope we can help at least a little!
Reaking of perfume and covered in glitter 😂
Chris here - we all know the feeling!
I remember feeling devasted after I opened a jumbo of 2018 Topps Chrome at $180. It was a tough rip back then. I still remember that first box. 5 base autos. 3 no name relief pitchers, Jack Flaherty, and a redemption of Francisco Mejia. I was shattered, lol.
@@1stBowman yeah that’s brutal.
Chris here - I have a reel in my IG page of the autos I’ve pulled over the years. It’s just so unlikely to break even.
@@SpitballinCards I probably should mention , for the sake of balance, that I opened a banging hobby of 2018 Topps Chrome. It had an Aaron Judge 1983 Orange refractor auto /25 plus all the good base rookies including an Ohtani refractor. I wish I still had the Judge auto. I graded it and sold it for a pittance pre covid.
I’m done buying. Will be on the sideline for a few years. I enjoy looking at new products. However, I can’t justify paying these prices.
Chris here - smart decision. Just pick the singles you want. Box prices are getting offensive.
Great breakdown of Topps Chrome. I think my concern is Topps is turning this into more like Prizm and copying Panini instead of sticking to there guns and doing the opposite. I usually buy two hobby boxes (keep 1 and open 1), but this year, will probably just open one. One of the most under appreciated inserts from this set is the Radiating Rookies. Really tough pulls and good looking cards. Last years Gunnar Henderson has only 135 graded at PSA. Until next time....
Nice! Good luck! Thanks for watching and commenting.
To answer your question Chris, the McGriff auto in a DRays jersey is for those of us who grew up in St Pete lol as kids are Braves fans then root for the DRays growing up as the home team. There’s not a ton of us though lol
@@AfterHoursCollector Chris here - thanks for the answer! Good think the card is low numbered!
I think only 81 of each. That should be more than enough 😂😂
I think you guys should talk about the topic of gambling addiction. Opening wax is gambling, and it seems to me that with the prices and print runs increasing, the only people Topps would be able to sell boxes to would be addicts.
Chris here - that’s a good idea. Sports gambling seems to be spreading all over the country with apps becoming legal in several states and ads for it all over Espn and mlb.
Ripping boxes is exactly that - gambling. And the odds really STINK
Great video keep up the good work! Thanks for the information 🎉

The dilution of Topps Chrome over the years is what made products like Stadium Club Chrome so refreshing the past couple of years. It's a shame they scrapped 2023 Stadium Club Chrome. I hope it returns this year.
Exactly!
@@audaldas Chris here - really bummed that set is gone. I can get over it if the chrome autos in Stadium Club are all ON CARD moving forward.
The pricing is so crazy given the dilution and has to be a direct result of breaker demand. As mentioned, the odds of pulling a Delly auto is something like 1 in every 300 hobby boxes yet the card may command only $500 on the singles market. So you only triple your money by hitting a 300-1 shot. How bad is that? Opening wax is not just a little bit worse than a slot machine. It is much, much worse than a slot machine. It makes zero sense to open wax these days. Yet breakers are mowing through this diluted crap.
Chris here - the math breakdown here says it all. The odds for the layoff make no sense.
I’m done ripping this stuff. Glad to hear you are as well.
I’ve been buying more singles lately but if you want that big hit you have to take a chance and bust open packs. Probably one hobby box for me.
Chris here - the thing is, the “big” hits are getting cheaper and cheaper to buy on the secondary market.
Box prices just don’t make sense if a Corbin Carroll rookie auto is like $50.
Singles only..no way in hell $40 for a blaster, $200 hobby, and don't even get me started on jumbos...basically a car payment. GL getting a good auto with this checklist bloat now
Chris here - 100%
Jeff here: totally agree! Thanks for watching!
I got absolutely destroyed by Topps Chrome last year (3 jumbos).......And I'm here for the blood bath part 2, ordered 3 jumbos again. Pray for me. 😅
Oh man, good luck!
Chris here - good luck!!!
Fight the addiction!
I want turkey red and Cracker Jack sets back
Chris here - maybe they’ll make them inserts in another product. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
They are pricing regular people out, breakers will buy most of them. And the number of cards and the print run. Keep it up. Love the Red Sox jersey Scott! 🤙🏻
I'm just getting into the hobby after not collecting since the 90s. Sounds like breakers are killing the hobby. I see them on tiktok and they seem scammy.
@@MrHahaveryhappy Chris here - I’d stay away, personally. Just buy the cards you want. Ripping is too expensive and not worth the risk.
Chris here - I hate these prices
I’m a Red Sox fan and would love a Don Orsillo autograph card!
Wouldn’t love pulling it but would like to buy one on secondary for cheap 😂
Chris here - I can get on board with that!
A jumbo case is $3300. So if by some miracle you pull SIX $500 cards, you still lose money.
Chris here - how insane is that?!
Singles only.
Dammit, topps
panini really watered down their products with excessively large checklist. it appears fanatics is gonna do the same with chrome.
Chris here - yep, they’re going to print and print and print. Can’t “grow the hobby” without more cards.
We collectors have to be smarter.
Topps was moving that way before Fanatics bought in. Check out how much Bowman autograph checklists have increased since 2018. 2020 Bowman Draft was wild. The prospects auto checklist burgeoned to 135 which was a significant increase on the year before. 4th and even 5th rounders suddenly had a 1st Bowman auto and that has continued. Insert autos also increased. Topps may not have gone the full 80+ parallels like Panini Prizm but it has been steadily increasing the print run in all products - especially the popular ones - year on year since I started taking notice in 2018. We reached the tipping point a few years ago imo. The value is absolutely atrocious and no amount of spin can make it otherwise.
@1stBowman for sure! At least with bowman, people will pay strong on those autos. Not so much for the 29yr old rookie reliver auto from chrome lol.
You guys do entertain.
Chris here - that’s the goal!
Thanks for watching! We appreciate the support!
🍻
I’m not a set collector but there are some desired rookie card singles I have targeted
Chris here - Alan, I’m right there with you
The best part about the prices is just knowing I'll stick to singles. I can't justify $200 for 1 vet or rookie relief pitcher auto.
Chris here - absolutely agree!
Thanks for watching
Aren’t single packs expensive too?
@@jacedragon I mean singles as in buying the cards I want, not packs or boxes.
@@Deevoized oh gotcha. But those can be expensive too $45 for one card

I spent $1300 on two jumbos and 2 hobbies for fun. Me and my wife like to rip for fun a few times a year and always set aside the money in advance
Good luck!

I bought two hobby boxes of UD allure and warned my nephew not to expect much. I definitely didn't get my money back, but got one super cool auto and a rookie Faber card. People should know they aren't going to make their money back. I'm giving up on retail and buying singles for now
Chris here - I agree, nobody should go into a rip expecting profits, but based on facebook and reddit posts I've seen, people's expectations are way out of wack.
It's fun to open with your nephew, though. And I enjoy a retail rip with my dad. But we are well aware that profit isn't happening.
Thanks for watching!
@@SpitballinCards yeah I tell him expect the worst, hope for the best. I got a local kid from St Paul on the auto in the hockey box. I was thrilled.
These prices have forced me into only buying singles.
@@docscards Chris here - agreed! Only way to go
Tovar debuted in 2022 before the Debut card was introduced (2023 product). He literally couldn’t have had a debut patch card because he didn’t have the patch on during his first game.
You can look forward to Amador hopefully in Chrome Update. There’s always patience for Veen and Romo in 2025. 😅
Chris here - thanks for clarifying!
Bryce Harper NL MVP already 🤔 idk about that one. Don’t forget about Shohei. I think I might see a 3rd MVP on the way 🫢🤫😮
Chris here - they’re there two front runners right now.
I have to consider biting the bullet on Breaker's Delight boxes, since that is the only way to get the Robin Yount auto (according to the odds). Also, how can you put Ryan Ruocco on a card and not have a Bob Uecker?
I did pre-order one hobby and one jumbo (which I have traditionally done since I got back into the hobby in 2018). But, it is crazy how much more I spend relative to 2018 compared to today. Normally, I have purchased a couple more boxes at The National for the special silver packs, but I am wondering if I have to consider other less-costly (and less desirable) boxes for the silver pack promotion.
I saw an interesting take (I think on blowout forums) that I somewhat agree with for collecting: flagship is now early 90s flagship, chrome is now flagship, sapphire is now chrome, and gilded is the new sapphire.
Chris here - that’s a really interesting take. I’m curious where topps/fanatics will take gilded in the ext few years. It’s a great looking set.
But all the different Sapphire sets have definitely diluted that product for me.
Listening to the four of you, it all adds up to a simple fact. Topps isn't asking the question that you are answering, which is, "is it worth ripping?". The question they are asking is: will breakers be able to sell the product. I disagree with Scottie that the breakers won't be able to sell it. They will. Having watched a lot of Sapphire the breakers are close to being maxed out but not quite yet. It is coming though and Fanatics business model is not gonna work.
Chris here - I think you’re right, topps chrome breaks will probably sell out just fine. At least at first! Lots of rookies in this product.
But man that checklist is huge. The refractor rainbow is huge. Good luck hitting anything.
yeah wont be buying sealed at 40$ a blaster. Just look at 23 update. They are so bad they are getting put into fairfield boxes. 24' topps chrome will be in those boxes next year. with the increased checklist, 2x price, the buyback is no longer a "fail safe" for buying a box at the inflated price. I will buy the singles and the completed set for 20$ a month after release. we are seeing the true new Toppnatics. and they will do some sort of marketing to try to hype us into the product, but im done. First year not doing topps chrome since i started collecting in 2015. Also on the broadcaster autos, absolutely not..... i have pulled 3 broadcaster autos and together they are worth less than a Jon Duplantier vet auto.
Broadcaster Autos are cool, if they were a bonus hit. No way should they be your guaranteed hit, especially in a product this expensive.
@@mnplumberman 💯💯
Chris here - buying singles is the only way to go
I was really looking forward to this even after being disappointed last year but this is it for me. Can’t do it. Just looked at the checklists again and I’m sure I’d get bent over by Fanatics. Getting tough to justify buying any new wax.
@@Str8BreaksHomie Chris here - right there with you. Prices make it impossible.
This was a fun conversation. I think the only thing thats made the hobby decline as much as print run increases is the idea that ROI is everyone's main focus. If you're ripping wax in 2024 and expecting a high ROI or to break even, you're insane. Better off quitting the hobby and investing in a HYSA.
Buy what you like and what you can afford. ROI is not everything
@@vinceperrotta2763 chris here - there is almost no hope of any ROI ripping packs and boxes. Gotta get extremely lucky.
But it still can fun - even if your left with kind of an empty feeling…
I wanted to buy a blaster for my birthday but then I noticed they removed a pack from them this year too. Increase the checklist, okay. Increase the price to $40, sigh. Give me even fewer cards with those hikes? Straight up I'm out.
Chris here - I didn’t realize that!! Just terrible. Wrf?!
Someone get @Philmington a jersey to wear.. 🙃
Chris here -we should get him a devers.
I almost never open baseball product anymore. Our local LCS ratbags have Topps Series 2 at $250 USD a jumbo and 2024 Bowman hobby at $330 USD. I refuse to do it anymore and I used to love doing it.
Chris here - ripping has always been fun but im priced out too. Just zero chance at even coming close to getting your money back.
I find myself looking for older products to rip. Seems a better value.
Chris saying, "Keep it out of the gutter," after saying several dirty comments himself is hilarious.
@@rockiesinoctober I’m a classic “do as I say, not as I do” kind of guy.
I checked the auto checklist. Unless I missed it, there is no Shohei auto in the set.
$40 a blaster????
Chris here - I think you’re right.
No Ohtani or freeman autos this year.
Fanatics is dumb. If they really wanted to be rich, sell your product at a cheap price, like 2018, so the secondary market goes beserk. Then create a marketplace to sell singles that replaces eBay and charges a lower fee. Boom, you don't dilute, still capture the price difference value, and dont have to saturate the market.
Chris here - this is a great idea and I’m guessing fanatics will try at some point.
Not the price lowering, but the selling platform.
If Michael Kay had an auto, that would become one of my most sought-after cards.
@@csc538 well guess what! He’s on the checklist!

And don’t forget if there also veterans autos in this product your going to dud a lot for both the regular and jumbo boxes.
There are

David Fry has a 2023 Update Debut Patch auto. 1/1 - it's his only MLB card from 2023 (he has no other cards besides minor league cards up to 2023 - no Bowman cards). He has a card in 2024 Topps series 2 with no RC badge. Does that make his 2023 1/1 his only RC? It's a fine line to walk.
Chris here - that’s really interesting!!
Might have to do some digging here.
I have a Spencer Strider Topps Chrome Auto if you want it
Chris here - thanks for the comment. I think I’m all set on strider cards.
For now….
Blasters were 34.95 last year. $40 this year
At least $40 indeed
Thanks for clarifying. $5 increase.
A little off subject ...but what will hapoen with these gunnar Henderson 2024 topps autos that have the rookie cup and the rookie shield...not supposed to have the shield ...his rookie is 2023...
Chris here - great question. We talked about it in our Series 2 episode.
It’s a terrible mistake. Some people will definitely overpay for the card thinking it’s a rookie and that’s a shame.
But what will happen? Nothing. The cards are out there. Just be careful. It’s not the first time topps has made this mistake either.
Does Spencer strider really not have a base chrome card? Not even in chrome update?
Chris here - correct.
He’s got rookie autos in 2022 and a future stars insert in 2023.
No base card. Even though he got a topps All star rookie cup in 2023. Only guy to have that and No base chrome card last year.
Very strange.
Open8ng a 2018 topps chrome jumbo is crazy at $2500. Even hitting a numbered Acuna or Ohtani your down on the box. Hitting a Acuna auto and your still down. 2018 at 2500 is not worth it ever. There’s value in boxes being sealed bc of rarity. Not so much bc of the ROI/contents.
The key is not to open. I still have mine sealed. Sealed wax IF the rookie class is stellar can be a good way to buy and hold. The difference back then was you didn't have a watered down product like it is now. I knew a guy who once opened 2000 Contenders expecting a Brady, didn't get it. That box today likely would be in the $15,000 range if he had kept it sealed.
Chris here - the value is in leaving it sealed!!
@@chrisc4264 💯💯💯
Fanatics is planning / hoping to IPO in the next 18months, fyi, I'd expect prices to rise and hype to multiply!
Chris here - scary to think these prices could actually go up.
Does the breakers win on this because of the price and just the chance of hitting the one that you want? Sure seems like it. Thoughts gents?
Breakers will do well, yes. And anyone that waits to buy singles in 3-6 months from now.

Chris here - you fanatics hates money being left on the table
So if this isn’t the baseball set what is?
@@dash9658 Chris here - we arent saying it’s a bad set. We’re saying that you are unlikely to get good value if you spend $190/$380 on hobby boxes. It’s a bad rip at that price.
Some cards will definitely be in high demand, but I’d rather just hunt those singles down than gamble on boxes.
Thanks for watching!
I will buy this years Chrome next year when all of it goes on clearance. A big go F🤬 yourselves fanatics, and those secondary market paticapaters, thanks!!👍😎💯
Chris here - I like the strategy!
Pick off the singles when you can!
Last year, I opened up around 60 blasters, maybe more or Topps chrome and only hit 4 MVP base and 2 refractors of them all together. I did hit a 2022 MVP stamped Judge xfractor /99 though.
I loved the product but it's bs they limit the amount of certain players they knew would win the MVP spots and saved themselves money from the buy back.
They are some greedy MFER at Topps I won't be buying like that this year
Chris here - with the expanded checklist for 2024, every base card and parallel will be tougher to pull!!
Its not a logistical nightmare to sign on-card....It's laziness. Make them rare. Cards in 90's-2000's made it happen..
Chris here - exactly. Laziness and cheapness.
if i sit at my kitchen table with a case of chrome and a box of tissues looking for an image that can replace the one i have in my head of me and my ex wife and my dog dont worry about how much money i borrowed in pursuit of my new happiness 😂😢😅. i know you still love me pete 😂

You guys weren't too negative, but to be fair the baseline of this show is slightly negative.
I am excited for the cards coming out of this set.. That is the only positive that can be said, everything else about it is worse than previous years, and I am a glass half full person who loves to rip.
I got a dual Acuna/Riley auto and it was sticker autos. The guys are together 250 days a year and can't sign the same card. I have zero hope for any of the dual legend autos.
Good feedback. Till we get sponsors we reserve the right to be slightly negative. 😉
