i showed this to my mom who claimed to be very good at physics during her high school years. before i showed her this, she claimed that the person would need to aim above the monkey to hit it. Then she proceeded to start a 10 min talk about why would i fail physics becuz of i saying that i bet we need to aim at the monkey. After i showed her the video, she claimed that if the monkey doesn't drop from the tree it wouldn't work...

if you were to change the height from where the monkey falls from, without changing the angle of the gun, would the monkey still get hit?

No, because in that case the gun would not be aimed directly at the monkey.

I prefer the college demo I saw where a dart was fired out of a gun using pressurized air which could be adjusted to different pressures. A photosensor caused the monkey to be released from the suspension electromagnet just as the dart left the barrel. The dart would stick into and remain with the monkey. The air pressure of the gun could be varied so the point of intercept could easily be varied.

Needs one more angle: a camera filming the whole scene, but it is dropped at the same time with the monkey. It would record a stationary monkey and a laser-straight shot, regardless of the muzzle velocity.
