I have stock gearing on my 225, and first gear is low enough to climb anything where I can get traction. If you road that trail with your tires only halfway inflated, you might want to check your wheels. They are the XT225's biggest weak point. After destroying one set of wheels, I started running 32 psi in my tires. That was 20,000+ miles ago, and they are still fine. I can ride trails like that with 32 psi. The XT's wheels are very flexy, and without enough air in the tires to support them, they quickly begin to fall apart. Broken spokes, spokes pulled through the rim, elongated holes in the soft aluminum hub. I sure would like to have a set of high quality wheels with straight pull spokes for that bike.
+Tim Higgins He's adjusting a "roadbook". It contains route notes...the fancier models are motorized...here's a link to a picture of one: www.google.com/search?q=roadbook&safe=off&espv=2&biw=1517&bih=783&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjUuvbS897KAhUT_WMKHVneDbsQ_AUIBygC&dpr=0.9#imgrc=OSa8KwviIZCufM%3A
Enjoyed this very much. Such a fascinating area.🙂
Goler Wash. Looks as good as when CalTrans first graded it.
XT's are great.👍

where you in first when you stalled it on that hill ? i have a 16t cs sprocket on my xt225 and it still has plenty of pull up very steep hills
