The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️

I remember playing the original as a spritely 21-year-old back in 2001, and it instantly became very special to me. Even now in 2024, I still listen to Akira Yamaoka's fantastic soundtrack while drawing. I'm currently almost all the way through the remake, and think Bloober Team have done a really great job. I particularly like the occasional nods back to items/puzzles that were in the original.
I understand this generation has grown into visuals and framerate, but back then there was a whole different joy on PS1 and a box Tv and a good game such as this.
You asked if it would have made more sense to make a remake of the first Silent Hill game. The thing with Silent Hill is that apart from SH 1 and SH3 every game tells it's own self contained story. The only constant is the Town of Silent Hill itself. So SH1 and SH3 tell a story about a cult and SH 3 is basically the sequel to SH1 (and there is also SH Origins which is a prequel to SH1 :D ). SH2 on the other hand has nothing to do with a cult. It tells the personal story of James and that's it. Additionally, SH2 is considered to be the fan favorite (followed by SH3), so remaking SH2 was probably the best decision. But yeah, it is quite confusing :D
Plus, we already got a reimagining with Shattered Memories, which I personally didn't like all that much. Silent Hill's pretty much gone nowhere since Downpour, so a remake of the second game is one way to reel in the old fans while trying to gain new ones.
I am personally VERY GLAD that these asshats are not BUTCHERING the SH1, the absolutely best game in the franchise. I also absolutely despise the nu-SH2 wannabe fans that try to turn #2 into some sort of standalone spinoff, all while bringing up "MUH CULT!!!!" a hundred time when talking about the rest. No son, SH1 and 3 are VERY personal stories, and the occult stuff is always just a smaller backdrop cog in the bigger picture. 1 outright ignores it. Last but not least: SH1 is the second most popular fan favourite. Been so the past 25 years.
@@GugureSux Dude relax, I wasn't trying to offend you. More power to you if SH1 is your favorite, I enjoyed it too. I was just trying to answer a question by summarizing the most common views on the franchise 😄
Since you were wondering, here's some similar games from the same ps2 era that are pretty unique their own way and worth checking them out: Rule of Rose, Haunting Ground, Clock Tower 3, Siren.
Im currently playing the game on PCSX2 on software mode (perfect emulation with 0 glitches, limited to 640x480) on a CRT Monitor at 640x480 interlaced 120hz with calibrated brightness for deep blacks. Yeah....this game DEFINITELY didn't need a remake.
yeah.. unfortinately people don't understand that, because... as many are mentionning "tank controls are outdated, the aiming sucks, ..." while here I am with 10 star achievement for every single SH from 1 to 4. majority just don't give a fuck about the story nor the atmosphere. they want to consume stiff shit action with no solid narration.
@@bombastik_bombWhich makes no sense because believe it or not the tank controls crappy aiming mechanics were like that for a reason. The team silent devs wanted to make you feel like a regular guy with no fighting or shooting experience to make you feel more vulnerable and if anything added to the immersion. It showed you real quick that your not some super human like Leon in re4 or some of these other action/horror games.
It was a product of it's time. That era, that hardware, the group of devs being thrown together by konami etc. There is just no way to recreate that magical combination. Having two og members isn't going to make it great. I don't even think the entire team silent could pull it off again.
The saddest thing is, Bloopooper's entitled twats outright ignored and neglected the TS' guys in the end, shooting down their suggestion of making a brand new game. Masahiro Ito especially has been openly AGAINST remaking the SH2 for many, many years now, and TS in general is known for always trying something new, not rehashing the same thing.
I played the PS2 version via emulartion a couple years ago and wasn't as high on it as most. I think that was mostly due to how I played it. I used a walkthrough because I sometimes get frustrated with games from that era providing minimal direction. I need to replay it without a walk through. With emulation of the PS2 version I have little interest in the remake.
And that is the problem. Using a walkthrough because you cannot pass a few parts. Have you ever beaten . . . let's say TMNT for the NES? Or Ninja Gaiden? Even Double Dragon 3? If you have, SH2 shouldn't be a problem.
Aside from maybe some of the puzzles, I really don’t think the Silent Hill games, or PS2 era games in general, are that difficult to follow or progress in? I mean they don’t hold your hand like modern AAA releases, but most games even then certainly weren’t that obtuse.
when i come over to my friend he forces me to play games he likes and one of those were SIlent Hill 1 to 3. Oh boi i wished i played those when i was younger. Especially SH2 was a masterpiece with its story telling and music.

I always had a special relationship with this game , especially after losing a wife it does hit hard .the remake tried and has its moments but it sacrifices some of the cool stuff that made it epic
Silent Hill 2 will always be one of the greatest games ever made. Still Wakes the Deep was also surprisingly good! Here is how I know the remake of Silent Hill is going to be pretty damn good. Just go watch the gameplay trailers and cutscenes. Just look at it. Like with your eyes. Looks fuckin good right? Yes. Yes it all does. Looks phenomenal. You won’t putting in that kind of work of fidelity, and showing off your gameplay of your game before it releases if you weren’t confident that it was nothing short of amazing. Don’t think you guys realize what kind of work goes into making these games. It’s a lot. Now I know there are some exceptions… saint Row 2022 looked pretty decent with their trailers and shit but it was a total shit show when it released. But they never showed off gameplay before release. There’s the difference. So relax guys. The Silent Hill 2 remake is going to deliver. I guarantee it.

@@GugureSux I think that's a bit hyperbolic to say all the worst fears. Bloober is not great, but the recent trailer and gaming journalist sites commenting on the time they had with it is more or less what I imagined it to be. I'm going in low expectations and if I'm pleasantly surprised by something then that's cool. There already have been several SH games made by Western developers that were already not the best, and at least this is trying and listening to what more or less made the original a cohesive piece.

You just slap the Enhanced Edition mod on the SH2, and the latest fan-fixes mentioned on the PC Gaming Wiki site on the other two, and you're good to go! SH2 is a masterpiece, but I HIGHLY recommend playing ALL of the OG trilogy. In release order. All of them are very easily acquired and played on any PC-like device made after the Windows XP era. And sorry, but the DEimake is confirmed to be a steaming pile of shiat.
Friend, i know you are in no obligation to know everything that there is to know in this world, but this game controls are the classic Tank Controls that were prevalent in the Resident Evil games for the playstation 1 and Dino Crisis and Silent Hill 1, these controls are sucky but back then everyone and their mothers dominated them. They make more sense in old RE games since they shift the camera perspective even more than Silent Hill.
Correct info, but I disagree. The "tank controls" never sucked. Literal children, me included, could master them in no time, resulting the later playthroughs (yes, you indeed replayed these games dozens of times) being borderline speedruns. The real-time cinematography of the SH games is in fact so good, that the makers of those (horrible) SH movies copied them almost 1 to 1 into their film.
Silent Hill 2 is one of the greatest games ever. However if you want another PS2 game that is unique like this, try the Fatal Frame games. Fatal Frame 2 is one of most unique horror games of that era.
I mean ive played it the first time in may and it dethroned shadow of the colossus as my favorite game and im super picky with the Remake. The way maria delivers the line or that the camera focuses on her hand instead of her face or that when you pick up the flashlight you no longer can see the dress from maria or the bad animations like the 2 frames doging or glas breaking wich dissapears after 1 frame the bad lighting wich makes james look like he is Photoshoped in pre rendered cutscenes all say that blooper has not the talent team silent had. Since may i remember how a youtuber said how he likes it to hang around in the prison and i understand why. You like the art that they have created there and Future generations will experience something that is not that.
THIS. All the shown trailers and gameplay videos demonstrate nothing but some absolutely butchered cinematography. And in a case of a story- and theme-heavy game like SH, that is a massive sin. It does not help that the gameplay is so generic bog-standard PS5 era over-shoulder action game slop, a la Homecoming / TLOU, that it comes off as a pure parody.
Try the fatal frame series and manhunt (made by rockstar)and no the best in the series is silent hill 1 . However, silent hill shattered memories is considered a loose remake of silent hill 1.
2's remake is getting backlash because it looks generic schlock that is typically made in today's day in age. For a game as genre defining and legacy holding like Silent Hill 2, "generic modern remake" isn't going to cut it.
Yeh I understand your point, but you can't expect the remake to have the same impact as the og. That's not a goal any developers can ever have because it's not a tangible thing. The cultural impact, artistic innovation and creative genius of the og isn't being remade here; they're just literally modernising the product. It obviously won't be a "game changer" like the og was, even if it's technically better (which it will be)
@@huzidamasta The thing is tho that fans or players of the original aren't expecting the "same impact" as the original. They're expecting a remake that improves the flaws of the original, not a boring dime a dozen third person schlock of a remake that's basically a wannabe The Last Of Us. How would this remake be "technically better" when it literally misses the point in almost every aspect of design or downgrades what the original already did with significantly weaker hardwear? If that's the case then they simply SHOULDN'T bother remaking anything and just make a new entry of Silent Hill and call it a day. Look at the Dead Rising 1 remake, aside from a few moronic changes, the remake STILL captures the point of Dead Rising pretty well since it still has its main gameplay and physics but significantly improved the jankie-ness of the original in order to make it more enjoyable.
@shriderrad4123 sounds like you want a last of us part 1 style remake rather than an re2 style remake. I personally want the latter and that's what I'm seeing, so I'm very happy
@@huzidamasta I rather have none as style remake. I literally was crapping on SH2's remake because it looked like a Last Of Us clone wannabe which again shouldn't be the case for Silent Hill whatsoever.
@shriderrad4123 imo, a remake should have the same vision/goals as the original, but using current technology. The original SH2 was aiming for graphical realism, so if it's being remade, surely graphical realism would be the goal?
I was pretty fascinated by the complete 180° they seem to have made with James (if that's even still the main character's name). Unlike the original where he's totally apathetic and void of emotion as if in a state of constant shock, they instead seem to have made him super emotional, I like the balls in the creativity there, cause let's face it, they're NEVER gonna live up to the original trying to copy it 1:1. However slim the chances might be for them to make a game worthy of calling itself a remake of Silent Hill 2 the only way to go IS to make it their very own version their very own way, and so I like that first sign of such a totally different main character. BUT, then came the combat trailer, which felt so extremely unnecessary to begin with, the fact they even feel like they HAVE to show off the combat feels like a pretty bad sign, Silent Hill 2 was never even ABOUT the combat 🤦 and yeah, even worse still, it didn't even look that good... So I have mixed feelings this far. The original is probably my favorite game of all time so this is a delicate subject for me 😤 I'm trying my hardest not to be too excited but I won't judge it till I've actually tried it.
Playd silent hill 2 when it first came out back in the 90s silent hill 1 is mutch better and the best silent hill game for me was silent hill the room and down poor
Still one of my personal favourite survival horror games even to this day. And no, the remake won't be good. It's gotten so bad, that the developers of SH2 Remake are even begging for fans to give it a chance.

The ""HD"" Collection is notorious clusterfuck. So bad, that even the original developers hated it! I don't know what kind of sinister lunatic would WANT modern crap like trophies in an atmospheric, emotional tale like this. That final trophy in the HD col. is just insultingly bad taste. If you must have HD visuals, play the original PC ports of 2-4, with the fan-fixes such as the Enhanced Edition mod. SH1's visuals you can easily crank up with the DuckStation emulator.

Please, even if the game is old, just check the settings. It doesn’t hurt. You could be saving yourself some trouble.

So happy people are finally talking about this franchise again, one of my all time favorites. Played every single one except 4
Give 4 a chance, it's better than downpour & homecoming
I got a second hand SH2 and playing it was one of the best experiences in my life. My wife waiting excited ( and sad) for the vhs tape scene
@@GugureSux

It was a product of it's time. That era, that hardware, the group of devs being thrown together by konami etc. There is just no way to recreate that magical combination. Having two og members isn't going to make it great. I don't even think the entire team silent could pull it off again.
The saddest thing is, Bloopooper's entitled twats outright ignored and neglected the TS' guys in the end, shooting down their suggestion of making a brand new game. Masahiro Ito especially has been openly AGAINST remaking the SH2 for many, many years now, and TS in general is known for always trying something new, not rehashing the same thing.
the two OG memebers were forced to make it woke as Konami's contract mentioned... get your facts straight...

Are you KevinGohD or his long lost twin? Edit: just realized you are actually Kevin after seeing the same backdrop LOL
Now you don't have to play the remake because I'm sure they will be exactly the same
I was pretty fascinated by the complete 180° they seem to have made with James (if that's even still the main character's name).

He clearly hasn't. He keeps commenting how the controls were "weird" and obviously skipped SH1. Doubt he has ever even touched RE1-3, the originals.
I tried to get into it this year for the first time. Didn’t like the combat at all.
You’ll probably like the remake
It's heavily a story and atmosphere driven game, the combat is basically just fluff and preferably avoided and the enemies are there to make you feel vulnerable and exposed to danger in order to generate a feeling of unease. I'd never recommend Silent Hill to anyone looking for a great combat game.
Nobody plays silent hill for its combat. The atmosphere and symbolism is the main topic of silent hill games.
Why do you care about the combat I swear to god these new "fans" drive me insane
@@MeryemOktar And if you do want combat, Homecoming is the one to get. Despite all the game's shortcomings, that's the one thing I feel it got right.
