The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Chap 38 The Injured Man

It is five years since her marriage. Helen writes she has decided to leave Grassdale but she doesn't elaborate. She describes how earlier, in September, the regular bunch came again for a visit. This time, although Helen sternly warned Annabella if she behaved in any inappropriate way, Helen would immediately inform her husband, Lord Lowborough of it. Annabella said she'd be good, but apparently just got more sneaky about it. Lord Lowborough finally becomes aware of Annabella and Arthur's love affair. He goes into the library and pours out his heart to Helen. He is utterly despondent. He accuses Helen of helping to deceive him, since she had known all along.
Lowborough can't stand it and leaves. Annabella invents a story about a business emergency - for reason for their departure. Huntingdon creepily asks Lowborough if he wants to swap Annabella for Helen. Lowborough swears at him and leaves.
The women all leave before the men. Helen is very uncomfortable in her own house. The men act irresponsibly. Helen admits she is very unhappy.
