- It was early March and there was a forecast for snow on higher grounds with temperatures of -5 and windchill of -12. Winds were to be 45km
I set up camp at 780 metres.
The snow seems to add to the cold experience and make it more bitter.
Nevertheless, I got my best night sleep ever on the mountains.

Tent: Helm Compact 1
Sleeping bag: Pajak core 550
Mattress: Thermarest NeoAir Xtherm
Bag liner: Sea to summit reactor
Backpack: Gregory Zulu 55

Its nice to be in a sheltered spot and hear the wind howling outside. It was cold when I stopped hiking. But when I got into the sleeping bag I was grand.

Ah, i saw someone else mention you were by Lough Ouler. Camped there myself a few weeks back. Was pretty cold but looks like you had colder. Brrrrr. Good for you. Enjoyed the video. Thanks 👍
Hi Oran. Thanks for your comments. The plan was to get a camp in the snow and if conditions were too bad on top, then I would drop down to beside Lough Ouler. I did actually walk down towards the lake for about ten minutes but turned around and went back up the mountain, I put a lot of extra walking on myself. The conditions were forecast to improve through the night and for once they were correct. I have camped in that exact spot twice before so that helped. I do most of my camping in Wicklow, so hopefully I will bump into you on some occasion. Glad you enjoyed your own night beside Lough Ouler. Take care 👍

Hi Miriam. Thank you for your comments, Yes I giggled for a while for some unknown reason. I was in a giddy humour all day 🙃. It was a miserable and very cold day on the hike up. The snow on top seemed to make it a colder experience. I was pushed for time and not sure whether or not to stay on top. I walked ten minutes down towards Lough Ouler and then turned around and went back up top. I was glad to get into the sleeping bag and just stay there for the night. The next morning the clouds descended to smother the sunrise 🤨. overall, I really enjoyed the whole experience, the frozen feet, water, and gas. warrior chancer is more apt 🤔😅. thanks again and take care 👍
Brilliant Andrew, what a trip! Love the idea of toasting the Nan bread over the gas, the smell must have been amazing! And what a view over Lough Ouler in the morning, the perfect accompaniment for your cooked breakfast! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Gary, Thank you for your comments. I got the idea of toasting the naan from a friend who I hike and camp with, it really makes the flavour nicer. I usually have Readybrek for breakfast, but the rasher is way better and tastier. Thanks again for you comments, I really appreciate it. 👍👍

Hi Niall. Not too sure how I feel about sending you to bed with a smile on your face🤔🤣🤣. The Helm performed great. It was actually the best night sleep I have had on the mountains. The sleeping mat and bag made all the difference. Yes it was great to wake up in those conditions. I was in Wicklow last summer, staying in some normal camp sites. My plan is to return and do a wild camp such as this. Beautiful scenery and people, when and if you meet them along the way! Thanks for the upload 🌲
