      Samara Weaving is the OPENING KILL. She has found fame and fortune in faking surviving a Ghostface attack. RICH and FAMOUS. Lives with her husband. She's at home watching television where she receives a phone call from none other than Ghostface. He taunts her saying he knows her secret and she's a PHONY. An HOMAGE is paid to Casey/Tara where Weaving plays with a knife block but this time around, it's covered in BLOOD when she pulls it out. It's at this point where she watches her husband brutally murdered on their AMAZON SMART VIDEO DEVICE in the kitchen. She runs to help him out but he's already DEAD. Chase ensues and Weaving meets her DEMISE, but she pulls off the mask to reveal CHAD as the first GHOSTFACE. We know Chad is one of the killers throughout the entire movie. Weaving was the original choice for this scene and thankfully replaced D-lister Kiernan Shipka.
      MOTIVE: Targeting all previous survivors of Ghostface attacks. Samantha has a big monologue at the end, stating how she's nothing like Billy Loomis and she is donning the Ghostface persona to end all future attacks. She is the only one who can protect her and the ones she loves and will do anything it takes to do so.
      Mindy: DIES at the hand of Sam (Ghostface). Mirrors SMG's death scene in Scream 2. Chad will never kill or harm his sister and Samantha takes it upon herself to take care of her.
      Three killers: Chad, Sam, Kirby. Kirby is the mastermind, paying homage to WILLIAMSON'S SCREAM 3 original SCRIPT, CULT OF STU MACHER/THE FOLLOWING.
      Kirby only has one kill: Samantha. Kirby states that she thinks she's the Final Girl, but there is only one REAL Final Girl - SIDNEY FUCKING PRESCOTT. It's time Kirby pays a visit to an old friend & IDOL.
      Epilogue: Kirby kills Kincaid in front of Sidney at their matrimonial home. It's brutal and vicious. Kirby escapes. This is when we see Sidney described in her most feral, vengeful moment. It's described as animalistic and nothing we have seen before in Sidney. She wants revenge for this. Now, it's personal. This sets up Scream 7. #ScriptLeaks

    Kenny (S1) isn't given enough credit as a character. Not only is he thoughtful and empathetic (especially in comparison to S1 Gale), but he saves Sydney's life. After this man has his throat slit, AFTER, like while he's bleeding out and literally dying, his LAST ACTION is to point Sydney to the back of the van where she can escape (and promptly does so). Like who else would be so selfless that after your throat is slit and you're dying that your last thought is to save this total strangers life. Absolute favorite character who's died in any horror movie I've watched simply because of that plus his overall likable demeaner.

    This might sound weird, but the Scream movies are actually MORE fun to watch when you know who the killer is. It's fun to do just this, and look for all the clues that should've led you to guess accurately who the killer was. With Billy and Stu, the writers did a good job in making you think "oh no way it would be the boyfriend that's so obvious" and it worked so nice they did it twice in the Requel lol. I was so just hoping that it wouldn't be Richie cause one the actor did a GREAT job with his role he had some of the best dialogue "how about 123 No FCKING Way Lane" is one of my favorite quotes of the franchise, and because I convinced myself that they wouldn't do the boyfriend thing AGAIN. But in hindsight, it makes so much sense for the reboot to ALSO have a boyfriend killer, since it's going back to the roots so to speak. Scream 4's killer just wanted to plant the evidence on Trevor, but here it was quite literally, a retelling of the first movie in a modern era. Nice.

      Two months late, sorry, but, I remember Jack said he wanted to subtly show hints he was the killer through the movie in facial expressions and reactions to how Richie would've reacted to things Amber had done as Ghostface. If you watch Scream 5 again knowing this, you pick up on them big time. Especially after Amber decided to just kill Liv in front of everyone and Richie high tailed it out of there. I believe, my theory, a lot of the third act was Richie trying to get the plot perfect for their "based on true events" motive for Stab and ending up with Amber going off of the rails.

    I think Mrs Loomis saying she took Gales seminar was actually a way of covering for the fact that Gale would possibly recognise her. Sidney later on states that Mrs Loomis has had a lot of work done, which is why Gale didn't instantly recognise her for who she was - just saw a vague familiarity.

    Couldn’t Billy be considered a red herring character? I’ve always thought part of the shock of the reveal is that the whole movie hints at him being the killer through out (dropping the phone, suspicious tone, getting arrested, video store scene) So much so that by the third act it seems so obvious that you start thinking it can’t possibly be him.

    While watching Scream (2022) I immediately thought Amber was the killer just because Ghostface didn’t kill her when Tara got the last question wrong in the opening. It just seemed suspicious especially how in the original when Casey got her last question wrong her boyfriend Steve died. This also applies to the hospital scene when Ghostface gives Sam the choice to either kill Tara or kill Richie. Even if she did pick Richie I doubt Amber would’ve killed him right then and there.

    The way you can identify the killers is by: 1. They die off screen, 2. They get calls or attacked in front of other ppl and never alone 3. They will outwardly accuse other ppl in front of the group 4. They get minor wounds during a scuffle while another character gets either killed or seriously injured
    Update: these rules are based on screams formula. An opening kill has never come back as a killer. 5 was the first film to break formula with Tara surviving. I actually thing a great way to add something fresh would be to have an opening kill survive just to be a killer.
    The killers also find ways to be separated from other ppl even if it is for a second. Notice how in one when stu invites sid and Tatum to the party be goes in the other direction. It's quite subtle but I also noticed Jill did the same thing in 4.

    For me Jill was obviously the killer the moment the cop looked at the open window, and Richie and Amber were very obvious as well, from the trailer even.
    The 2 least obvious killers were Mrs Loomis and Roman because they have the least amount of screen time than any of the other killers.
    The original Scream does a good job with subverting your expectations, because you would think Billy was too obvious as a killer, but it subverts that with him being the killer. You would also think Stu was too comedic to be a killer but it also subverts your expectations with him being the accomplice.
    Mickey was on the obvious side, I mean they had to delete the alternate film class scene because it made it too obvious that Mickey is the killer.

  • @SouthPlaya

    These days it’s almost too easy to figure out who the killer is. About 25 minutes into scream 5 I already had strong feelings for Richie being the killer due to how too afraid he was of everything which is the opposite of being the killer

      @jagged-panda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Dewie literally told Sam to be careful of the boyfriend right at the beginning of the film, and Amber had such a bad attitude throughout the film that it just had to be her. Plus, Ghostface sliced Richie on the arm in the hospital and let him live. That trick was done with Jill in Scream 4.

    I found this video VERY interesting. I never even thought about the fact Scream 2's killer films the murders and Mickey always carries around a camera. And in Scream 5 Amber says bruising could be a sign of the killer while being bruised later herself. They really do give out a lot of subtle hints of who the killers could be and that's why I thought all the thought put into these movies.

    Even Derek could be considered as a Red Herring, as after what happened with Billy Loomis he is the "easiest" suspect, the most obvious so the least possibile, or even Kincaid in the third one. And even Mickey could be added partially to apathetic friends category, as he enjoys describing the killings and used to record the crime scenes, not as much euphoric as Stuart, but through all the movie he has the part of the friend that is enthusiastic of what's happening.

    I will probably try and forget all of this before Scream 6 so I am surprised haha, but this was such a good analysis!
    Also I think Chad was a little less fleshed out because he was originally supposed to die. I saw in an interview that the crew liked the actor (and character) so much that they added the scene where he is seen in the ambulance... ALSO omg how did Roman not have a pulse??????? Not even a misdirect, just bad writing lol. Gale did not have to check if he was dead

    • @ZackCherry
      @ZackCherry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      You’re right! Chad was supposed to die. But they liked him too much, and also realized that they had killed all of the male characters.
      There was a line in scream 3 where Roman explains that he knew how to make his pulse stop, but it was taken out for being too scripted. Seems to me it would have made more sense to edit out Gale checking his pulse. I mean, that’s not the first thing I’m gonna do when I see a dead body with a knife in its chest.

The dude literally called one of his victims and talked to her in his normal voice from his own phone, reading the movie script before switching to Ghostface voice... , when he was telling the cops "It's not me, someones trying to ruin my movie" ,I believed him momentarily, but then I remembered he was literally going over the movie script with one of the victims which only the Directo(Roman) would have

      Very late reply but 1, 3, 5 and 6. Billy was pretty obvious, so was Stu and the way those 2 communicated gave it away. (For example, after Billy killed Tatum, he gave Stu an eyebrow raise to tell him the job was done)
      Same reason for 3.
      For 5, Dewey litterally said, never trust the love interest and also the killer only sliced Richies arm, why not finish the job? For Amber, how would you not notice your phone taken away, litterally recording, right infront of you? makes no sense.
      For 6, Bailey was pretty obvious for the way he acted and talked. Ethan was also pretty obvious, considering all the claims Mindy made towards him (remember how Randy made all those claims towards Billy?) So i didn't doubt she was wrong. Quinn was unexpected though.

    in scream 5, during the Hospital scene I figured out who the killers were based on the fact that when the other killer shows up, the way they handle the other person, completely ignoring the one person who SHOULD be a threat to chase the main character and not killing them. these movies are alot more fun when you figure it out ahead of the ending

  • @collwyr

    Mrs Loomis, Stu & Amber were probably the only killers I knew were the killers pretty early on into the movie, just something naturally felt off about their characters in their own ways.
    Like you said with Stu, his demeanor regarding the lives that were killed compared to the rest just felt completely off and just seemed like he was thrown into scenes to be chaotic and spicy.
    Mrs Loomis just felt like she was unnaturally big (as a character) in scenes she was in when she was meant to be a background character.
    Amber was more of a gut-feel, her unnatural hostility towards Sam and almost territorial control over Tara just felt completely against the grain and thought she was the killer.
    Angelina actually ticked this box too so I was surprised when she wasn't the killer but equally surprised to learn from this that she was meant to have been one, so I guess im technically 4/4.
    Did anyone else feel like these characters possessed something none of the other characters (whether they ended up being killers or not) had?

    I’m pretty sure that in one of the original scripts for scream 2, Hallie was supposed to be one of the killers. They had to revise the script multiple times though during shooting due to them getting leaked.

    Glad you mentioned the bit about known survivors and how they shouldn't suddenly be revealed as a villain. Read so many posts and comments suggesting Dewey or Sidney become the killer in Scream 5 and it never made any sense.
    Also, when watching Scream 5, I was at first convinced that Tara was in on the murder plot, but it didn't seem to hold up because we (the audience) experience the pain she went through in two different scenes. In Scream 4, we're shown Jill's arm slashing, but Sidney, Gale, Rebecca, and Olivia (and the two officers) are shown in conflict with Ghostface.

    I actually think Angelina would've been a more interesting character, if she was kept as Roman's partner in crime. It would've explained things, such as her suspicious behaviour, her tonal shift, later in the movie, and maybe how Roman was able to fool Gail into thinking he was dead.

    Bit late, but two (long) points:
    *
    1) Mrs Loomis is a fantastic twist killer who I would argue is a "devil's advocate" type, but for Gail rather than Sydney. (Mickey is the worst one for the very same reasons.) Mickey is obviously gaslighting Syd, has zero reason to be there other than to be the killer, and looks about twenty years older than everyone else (seriously, why did they have him made up like a middle-aged man masquerading as a college student? It's so distracting!) As fun as his antics are after his reveal, they just come across as incredibly obvious and forced before it. The fact that he literally disappears for half of the movie's runtime doesn't help either. He's the guy who's so suspicious that you think "That's probably the killer". Then you forget he exists until the end, when he's like "I'm the killer". And you're like "Who are you again?"
    *
    It's worth pointing out that Mrs Loomis is doing the exact same thing as Mickey is, but it's so subtle. One thing I like about both killers is that they obviously absolutely love what they do. But whereas with Mickey it's obvious from the start, with Mrs Loomis (thanks to Laurie Metcalf's awesome performance) giving just the occasional sly smile or look to indicate what she's about. At one point she practically confesses to being the killer (it's when she says "I think the killer might be from Woodsboro." As the killer from Woodsboro. She's practically inviting everyone to suspect her because she knows she can get away with it. There's just the slightest hint of glee when she says this.) And her slightly off-kilter tone when she's asking Gail whether it worries here that "someone might be watching your every step" is a wonder to behold. She's applying subtle psychological torture to Gail at every opportunity. (I also love the clue that she actively avoids seeing Sydney, at one point disappearing as soon as it's mentioned that Syd is about to arrive, when this seems completely counter to her character's apparent motives. Surely this thwarted but ambitious reporter would welcome getting some quality time with the famous Sydney Prescott? It's a beautiful indication that this character is not what she initially seems to be.)
    *
    On the other hand... Laurie Metcalf just plays it a little too wide-eyed and crazy from her introduction in the final act. I would've liked her to get to that point slowly as she gets more and more angry and vengeful throughout the final scene. (Tim Olyphant kills it in this scene.) So yeah, I much prefer Mrs Loomis' portrayal before the final act, but Mickey's after it.
    *
    2) Roman... is just the killer. Literally, this is his character. When I watched Scream 3, I never thought anybody else could be the killer. His motive and guilt are obvious from the start. His positioning as the director, his lame-ass "arrest and release" thing, his unconvincing fakeout death offscreen, the fact that he's the one ineffectual male character with glasses (which was a really weirdly common killer trope at the time), the fact that he keeps turning up for reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with the main plot, as though the filmmakers just want to emphasize that he exists... there's nobody else to suspect here. I mean, what am I supposed to think - that it's Kincaid, who has "heroic red herring" practically written on his forehead? Is there any other person who gets any characterisation at all? Add to that that Giles Foley's performance is the worst by miles of any of the killers, and... man. Look, I enjoy Scream 3 despite its very obvious flaws, but c'mon. I don't like a mystery that has no mystery in it.

      @GiftedContractor ปีที่แล้ว

      Everything you just said about Mickey is true of Billy in the first movie. I am not saying you're wrong actually, I am saying I think it's supposed to be that way, because the parallels are intentional as the guy who is such an obvious suspect it is meant to loop back around to not being suspicious because it is too obvious.

    • @H0lyMoley
      @H0lyMoley ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GiftedContractor See, I think the problem is that Billy has an obvious function in the story if he's not the killer - the wrongly-suspected boyfriend whose heroic death is another way the killer tortures Sydney (basically the Derek arc) which pays into the scene where he apparently gets stabbed by Ghostface himself; whereas Mickey doesn't have one at all. (This isn't true of Mrs Loomis by the way. She's apparently there to give Gail a dose of her own medicine, and facilitate Gail's redemption arc in this movie. If she'd just kept turning up for no apparent reason, as Mickey does, then she'd have been way more suspected. But she has a reason for being there that's not just "she's probably the killer".)
      Mickey's just... there. He's kinda part of Sydney's friend group, but we have no idea how he got there (Randy's the guy who survived the last movie, Derek's the boyfriend, Hallie's the roommate... what is Mickey again?) Billy was definitely meant to be suspected, so as to set up the Billy kill "twist", which I think it's safe to say nobody at the time saw coming. There's no chance of this with Mickey, so we're just left with a character who is obviously manipulative and keeps showing up for no apparent reason, before disappearing completely before all the Ghostface action really gets going. It doesn't help that, because of his total lack of placement in the story, he's completely unmemorable as a character. He's got some good dialogue (I love how he appears to ruin his chances with Hallie by insulting Ewoks). And Tim Olyphant does his best with what he has. But I don't know anybody who thought Mickey could be a red herring.
      I didn't make up that reaction by the way. I watched this movie with some friends who hadn't seen it before, and their reaction upon Mickey's reveal was: "Who is that?"

    • @GiftedContractor
      @GiftedContractor ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@H0lyMoley I saw Mickeys function as the Randy of the first movie. Like yeah Randy is still there, but he serves a completely different function now that he has been there once, he is the one who can truly sympathize with what Sydney is going through and is one of the only people Sydney can absolutely trust. So the post of "slightly dorky movie nerd who chimes in with his own theories but in a detached way, and clearly is into one of the girls but keeps a respectful distance" is now open. This is why Randy zeroes in on Mickey immediately when he is sharing his own theories but then acknowledges he himself is a suspect for all the same reasons - he occupied the same spot himself in the previous movie, and even in that movie he himself admitted "if this were a movie I would be the *prime* suspect." Obviously in the first movie he knew he didn't do it which is why he called out Billy first, but it is an important turn of phrase; Randy's number one suspect is always *Randy*, and thats why he calls out Mickey from a mile off.
      It also reveals an excellent parallel between the scene where Sydney shuts Randy out of the house in the first movie and the scene where Mickey makes her choose between Mickey and Derek in the theatre. The first time she chose not to trust Randy and she was wrong; this time she tries not to make the same mistake and picks "Randy", and she is wrong again.
      I agree he isn't memorable but in my head thats always been less about him not having a role and more because his role is as the new version of Randy, and Randy was always just a way better more interesting Randy in every way. It is hard to stick in peoples minds when you do everything your predecessor did but not as well.

    • @H0lyMoley
      @H0lyMoley ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GiftedContractor I agree a lot more with this. The thing is, I think Randy was massively misunderstood. In the first film he's basically the toxic fan who gets everything wrong (the "Cujo" moment in the video store is one of my favorite little touches of this entire franchise) and nobody likes. So naturally he got adopted by his own toxic fandom who didn't "get" the joke. (Seriously, Randy fans... y'all need to calm down.) So they did basically the only thing they could with him in the second film - they made him basically idolized, gave him the most obvious wrong line ever ("Stay away from her you b---h!") which is at least more obviously wrong than Laurie not being a virgin, then had him die in the dumbest way possible.
      Mickey kinda goes get this treatment a little (again, the Ewoks line. Seriously, who doesn't like Ewoks?) The thing is, most of the factual stuff Mickey states, as little of it as there is, is correct, whereas Randy was basically wrong about everything (except "The Howling", and again... Cujo moment.) So I think they're almost rivals, with Mickey ending up as the winner. The really interesting thing, as far as this thoery goes, is that it's not Mickey who actually kills Randy - it's Mrs Loomis. (Another thing I like about S2 - with every single Ghostface appearance, there's something onscreen hints at which of the two killers in behind the mask. Randy's kill is the most obvious, with a live TV showing a red-headed reporter visible behind in the van that the stabbing happens in.) Looking at it this way - is it yet another sign of the contempt the filmmakers have towards Randy's fandom that they won't even let him be killed by his rival? Hmmm... I kinda like that theory.

    • @GiftedContractor
      @GiftedContractor ปีที่แล้ว

      @@H0lyMoley I mean I wouldn't go that far, I am not a huge fangirl or anything but I do like Randy as a character. I saw him as just so excited he was living in a horror movie that he forgot this isn't a fuckin movie dude, have some empathy. But he does call the correct killer every time so he's got to be meant to be correct about some things. I am glad he didn't get the girl or anything, I think that would have been dumb and cheap, but I do like the character. But it explains why he and Mickey got to have the sequel debate (as the video says of course Mickey fights for sequels while Randy champions the original), they're the same dude in their respective movies. The whole premise or scream 2 is harkening back to and building on the original, and even the killers consider themselves to be making a sequel, so to me it only makes sense they themselves would draw the parallels between the stage and the door scene since they set it up (and they've definitely seen the door scene, it would definitely make Gails book and this Stab). I think the familiar friend group structure from the previous movie was intentionally preserved on a meta level so they could build and expand on it as a good sequel is supposed to do. Fiesty girl best friend, boyfriend, movie nerd. Tatum, Billy, Randy and Hallie, Derek, Mickey.

    and for knowing the targets, i think the scream franchise has a pattern in who's gonna be ghostface's targets. ghostface mainly targets the people who slowly sink into the "background" whether they are aware of the franchise (or elements of the franchise) rather than the original, not know they're in the middle of danger "as a character", or plainly setting themselves in the movie by other sources related to the movie itself (gale's producer with randy's scene and the teacher when stumbling upon a ghostface mask).

    This was a great in-depth video, and in a roundabout way I think it also gives a lot of well supported arguments for why Scream 3 in particular rubs so many the wrong way compared to other films in the franchise. For one, it used a Wild Card kind of character as the big killer, which means that the threat of the film had little screen time or significant drama with any of the main characters, Sidney most importantly, which makes their later reveal a rather disappointing one. The best reveals are when the relationship between the killer and the hero/heroes explodes and changes in an instant, as we uncover that someone that was once so close to a character we are rooting for is now out for blood. It also doesn't help that so much of Roman's story was made to cheaply connect to Sidney's in a retconned fashion, to be a secret relation to her that has motivated his bloody game. It's never a good storytelling move to retcon a character to such a major position when they will feature so meekly in the story of the hero, as their threat will always feel like it comes out of nowhere and lacks the punch or surprise of a killer who is given more meat in the story itself. It's also just sloppy to make a character in a third film far more important to events dating as far back as the first movie, as it changes our assessment of the earlier films and raises questions about why those kinds of characters weren't so important to the earlier films if they were revealed as such through their retconned revelation.
    Furthermore, it doesn't aid Scream 3 that you can still see moments in the final edit that point to there being two killers, which once again underscores how much sloppier the scripting was compared to the far better films before and after. Instead of crafting a more focused, well formulated story that didn't leave as much room for discrepancies, the filmmakers seemed to just throw their hands up in the air because they couldn't make the story they decided on work with the footage they already shot. But as it goes, I'm sure the studio was breathing down their necks to get the movie wrapped, and with budgets in consideration, I'm sure Craven and company knew they wouldn't be able to just reshoot a bunch of the film to make it line up more with a logical progression of events, and instead slapped together what they had to the best of their ability while trying to mitigate the two killers story where they could. That still leaves room here or there, like the Woodsboro set attack on Sidney, where you can feel the two killers story bleeding into the final, one killer story they ultimately decided on telling. It's these kinds of sloppy inconsistencies that make Scream 3 stick out far more in negative ways, compared to the far more competently written and assembled films before and after it.
