Mercator's projection does not move the equator up or down, changing area's, that's political jumbo. For those who float a boat, it works well, but we look it little portions at a time. There are several projections used for they with air under their wings to.
Inaccessibility was a factor in a certain rich guy's choice of residence. In the late 1930s, he clearly saw that war was on the way. So he decided to get away from it all. He chose an inaccessible island in the middle of the Pacific, as far away from any likely belligerents as possible. He hired a huge ship and the men to crew it, and bought construction materials. He went out on this ship to his island paradise and supervised the construction of his dream home. When it was done, he paid off all of his contractors and laborers and moved in to his remote and peaceful house. He was assured by the fact that the nearest likely belligerent was over four thousand kilometers away. Peace at last? Hardly. The name of his peaceful island paradise was Guadalcanal.
I was horrified when I saw the conditions in China and some other Asian countries. Some of the pollution they permit we banned in the US like four decades ago or earlier. I'm amazed some of those cities can even breathe properly. Probably why they mask so much even not during pandemics.
The majority of the pollution comes from only a couple of countries, China [30%], USA [15%] and India [7%] and it's just appalling that a first world country contributes so much to the pollution problem.
Love the video thumbnail. The Rio completely separates Mexico from the US and the Pudget sound extents all the way along the US / Canada border in the real example. LOL. Must have been a very dry year last time I drove to Canada and back as I didn't use a bridge. I generally use the map in my nav sytem as it can actually be used for navigation. The map needs to be accurate and show great circle routes when crossing oceans. All flat maps are projections with the associated distortion in large scale maps. Small scale maps such as city, county, etc have much less projection distortion so they are fairly accurate for local use.
The point of that map was to correct the size distortion only of the mercator projection, not the distances between places. Go to thetruesizeof.com and you can drag any country to the equator to see how big it really is. It's neat.
Personally, I find the Economic Map at the end to be the most interesting. It certain does have some of the most influence on our day to day lives, and any unbalancing could upset the whole world.
The brand map is also misleading since it is based on economic success. Traditionally, brands actually produced products and would be a correct measurement. However, since some of these companies produce nothing, they cannot be the leading brands. Only when we combine services with actual brands can this map be considered accurate. Being the biggest seller of soap, for example, means nothing if you sell everyone else's brand of soap and none of your own. That is just retailing, not really branding. Bad map.
When businesses learn the dangers of pollution it will be too late. It's pointless for people to try and stop businesses from polluting as long as there making money 💰 they don't give a shit

They have a 5 lane each way h/way going to the north of the country, but there are NO cars/busses etc. on it period! apart I guess trucks that would carry goods to the capital, this is because the country folk are poverty stricken and periodically on the verge of starvation, heath services are very poor. Many of their workers that are sent to China to work for the govt. and also the defectors that arrive in the Sth. are riddled with worms apparently because in the countryside human excrement is used to fertilize the crops! If you want to visit you get a minder and you can only see/film/photograph or go where they will allow, the documentary maker did get to go to a supposed restaurant outside of the capital, he was taken to a place that had seating for about 50 and yet he was the only one there! the meal was good and a waitress type lady stood against a wall opposite him for the duration, he tried to engage with her but it was all very superficial/surreal/stilted and she seemed embarrassed and not at ease. So what to make of North Korea? a weird place where you had better not stand in front of a picture or statue of their 'dear leader' when taking a photo if you want to keep out of their prison.
@@johnzuijdveld9585 In many ways from that, it sounds as though they built basically a eutopia for a very select few people, so that when people come and see the country they only see that its such a good and wonderful place. but in contrast it is quite the opposite everywhere else. This would also snow why there is a single bright blip in north Korea at the capital
@@froggybogfrog893 Nth Koreas' rulers are not stupid they are bright 😊but that is NOT why the city lights up at night. They have suckered the West for 2 generations or so into giving them aid in a bid to curtail their aggressions against Sth. Korea and more recently against Japan and the US. The pattern is: they act aggressively to S.K or Japan and we ease sanctions or increase aid to pacify them, 4-6mths later they increase aggressions and it all starts again. They use this money to finance their nuclear agenda! in other words WE have paid for their N. program! So smart is the West! The sanctions the West apply to them has little affect on the leadership because they have established very successful, international, underground and mafia style organizations that apparently can operate with impunity all around the world, some well known brand names are apparently majority owned by Nth. Korean interests, and the world does nothing about this! It is sad/stupid because N.K has many times tried to get a peace treaty with America and it was rejected every time. Another insight into American/Western intelligence is that many yrs ago I saw a documentary showing that the Vietnam war did NOT have to happen! After the Vietnamese gained their independence from the French their leader 'Hoe Chi Ming' (do you recognize the name?) apparently did NOT want to align with the communists either nth. or east of them. He didn't trust the British and so he turned to the USA. Apparently he wrote numerous letters to the US. president pleading for support as he feared the communists would invade if he did not get help! Would you believe that the US. president NEVER saw any of those letters because the ppl. who read all mail to the president and who decided what the president should involve himself with had never heard of a Hoe Chi Ming and so the president never responded to him. In desperation H.C.M. turned to the Chinese (the lesser of the treat at that time) for economic and military support because he feared that the Russians would invade. fascinating
The export and import maps don't show where most of the exports go to or imports come from. It shows which country receives more exports from or sends more imports to the specified country. China exports more products to the United States than to any other country, but it does not export most (i.e. more than half) of its goods there. One might think that is just semantics, but in this instance, using the correct term makes an important difference.
I liked the pollution map showing where we REALLY should be encouraging S/E Asian nations to clean up their act, not the only place but it seems that area is the worst. Also liked the import export maps which I think are quite interesting and possibly useful to some.
I read an article, I believe in The Atlantic, that says industry is what pollutes the oceans and consumer recycling is like putting a bandaid on an amputation. If you see what comes out of the ocean you'd agree.
I'm not surprised that Ikea is the biggest corp in Sweden. We Swedes sure love building our own furniture. We Europeans and Chinese are plotting to take over the world. You just revealed our plan
WWGTD absolutely nothing but complain about it. Boyan Slat is the "Kid" who is actually doing something about the plastic pollution. Give him some more love and exposure.
Only some people who study Geography at the college level even realise that different projections skew map dimensions in such a way some countries' sizes are greatly exaggerated.
I really liked the plastic waste maps , I wish you would do a entire show on that , it looks like America and Europe are sending their plastic waste to other countries that then just dump it in rivers , that take it to the ocean . Is this correct ? If it is , it would be a "bombshell" of a show to expose that !
High population = More pollution. People pollute , more people pollute more. Those plastic bottles in India and China were use there not shipped from across the planet and dumped into a Chinese river.
@@Crashed131963 So we are burning fossil fuel to ship the bottle half way around the world to get dumped into a river that runs into the sea , it would be better to dump it into our own rivers , or use the Nuclear navy to haul it .
@@robertlackey7212 In Canada we put garbage at the road side and it ends up buried in a landfill. Nobody dumps garage into a nearby river or even thinks about trying it.

But Greta's whole point is that people like her can't make any significant difference, only the powers that be can do that and to make change we need to pressure them. But no, go back to your bashing of a literal child because accepting that we have a moral obligation to make decisions that negatively impact ourselves for the sake of others in the future shatters your comfortable selfish little worldview. Because Greta's detractors never want to put themselves under the same scrutiny she exposes herself too by actually arguing her points. They're too damn cowardly for that. They'll show themselves as the snakes they are and attack the person rather than the point.
The wealth map also reveals some of the modern city-states in America, or states where a single city is so large and controls most of the income that the government tends of focus on that city and ignore the rest of the state. So, we can see, states like Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Georgia, New York, and Pennsylvania are controlled by one city that's so much larger than any other cities in the state. New York is the worst offender because the next largest city in New York after NYC (8.3 million) is Buffalo with only about 250,000 people.

5:12 Yeah, didn't know both Canada and Mexico were separated from the US by oceans...
I thought the same thing, but the tool they were using only adjusts the size of the country/continent not its position.
Both Mexico and Canada are part of the North American continent connected to along with the U.S. They are not separated by ocean, he disconnected all countries to show us the real size of each country.

You have to understand map projections. When going from 3d to 2d, you have to choose what accuracy you need and where. It will cause distortions for other parameters and why maps don’t look alike.

Those pollution level maps are scary and worrying :'(
I was horrified when I saw the conditions in China and some other Asian countries. Some of the pollution they permit we banned in the US like four decades ago or earlier. I'm amazed some of those cities can even breathe properly. Probably why they mask so much even not during pandemics.
@@thunderbird1921 They have a high incidence of respiratory diseases, cancer, etc.

Bad map.
Interesting take on it. Definitely worth pointing out.

7:18 The reason North Korea is dark in terms of light pollution is due to their curfew where no lights should be on . I guessing this is measured at night
You sure it's not because many non city areas ie: everything outside of the capital ! does not have access to electricity 24/7? I heard that they only get supply for a few paltry hrs/day because the infrastructure is THAT woeful !
@@johnzuijdveld9585 That could be the case, I haven't heard much about what's going on there other than the curfew, if that is going on then yeah that would for sure explain it
@@froggybogfrog893 I've seen a few documentaries about NK. (love docos') and the impression I get is that the capital Pyongyang is basically a 'showcase city' where the elite and loyal and their families get good housing, health service and good educations.

Kansas City is the most unique 'cause it's the major city for two states.
