Vegeta's sacrifice also means alot more than Goku's, Goku knows when he dies that he can keep his body and keep training to become stronger, vegeta knows its the end and hell awaits him.

Yeah Vegeta had to deal with his past karma Piccolo basically said he was going to hell lol. Vegeta didn't have to die though he was reckless and wanted that rematch at any cost even innocent lives and he didn't listen to goku and thought he could beat fat buu but was horribly wrong ...Gokus sacrifice was much more significant even though he was cleaning up Gohans mess but Vegeta could've teamed up with Goku and beat fat buu

    • @jdreid323
      @jdreid323 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@jasonhearn5818 And that's exactly why it's so impactful because none of that mattered. Majin Vegeta's first speech "Live your life ruled by another, watch your race be dwindled to a handful, and tell me what's more meaningful than your own strength". He up to this point was not able to prove anything as he was (in his mind) defeated by Goku who proved that hard work can beat talent in the Saiyan saga, beaten by his abuser in the Frieza saga, and is the technical reason why his son died thanks to making cell perfect to the point he had to apologize to Gohan. That wasn't frustration that was trauma and years of it. His death is more meaningful because he knew he couldn't beat Buu, but he was finally able to let go and get rid of the suffering he accumulated in his life.

Just a little add-on for the video: Vegeta's relationship with Trunks is an excellent showing of Vegeta's psyche. At first Vegeta refused to accept Trunks as his son at all, not dismissing him only when he had some info to share. After SPOILERS FOR ANYONE CURRENTLY WATCHING THROUGH THE CELL SAGA FOR THE FIRST TIME
Cell killed Trunks, something sparked in him. I think that Vegeta didn't want a family because he didn't want to lose everything again. He only truly recognized what he lost after it was gone. After an experience like that, it influenced him to cherish his family at all costs, willing to even put aside his pride to protect them.

to add on. knowing that in that time in the arc during the majin saga, vegeta noticed that gohan, who goku himself said will be the guardian of the earth, have gotten weaker than not just when he was ss2, but weaker than vegeta himself. he knew that goku was dead and in his mind wont be coming back to earth to save em. he prolly saw that babbidi route as a way to get stronger and surpass goku not outta ego or spite but a way to tell himself that hr can protect his family especially knowing that there is a new villian on the rise

Which also reminds me of Namek with his fight with Dodoria. He says he never cared about his father, his people, or his planet, but that he was mad at himself for being used. The way I see it, it was a bluff. He refused to show he cared when deep down he does. He didn't want to show weakness and Dodoria was intimidated. Vegeta does care, otherwise he wouldn't talk about Saiyan pride all the time or speak of the Saiyans at all.

unfortunately i think the one who strives to better himself is Goku while Vegeta trains to be the strongest which is rly apparent in his attitude during his first battle with Goku were he is of
the opinion that his title not his hard work should have made him the best by default. While Vegeta becomes a genius of hard work during dbz i still think his reason for doing so is to not fall behind or surpass his rivals. In my mind i'm pretty sure that if he ever came to the point were he realises that he has outclassed everyone by miles he would stop training.
Another point that ads to this that he is always shocked and angry when he meets someone stronger and tries to bruteforce a win while Goku is excited and takes it as an oportunity to grow. Imo thats the reason why Vegeta will never defeat Goku.

@@jonathanfullmer2455 Well good points though i would say that the start of the Buu arc made it rly clear that he was infact training for his rematch with Goku and while ur right in that i also don't think he would stop training completely what i meant before was more that he needed that conclusion to his rivalries to be satisfied.
It is true that come the Buu arc he was stronger than Gohan but thats not what he wanted. He wanted to beat Gohan at his peak to proofe he is better than him not beating up on a teenager who dropped training seriously for years.
That all beeing said thats only talking about Z-Vegeta i think Super did wonders for his character especially the Moro and Granola arcs show that he rly is a changed man.

I think Goku was also a mirror to Vegeta, every-time Vegeta sees Goku he cannot see anything except that Goku has fulfilled his destiny and has achieved in every way Vegeta has failed. Goku is the representation of who Vegeta should be but isn't. thats why when he dies Vegeta is at first angry that he wont get to prove himself but so quickly recovers because without that mirror Vegeta can move on with his life he even has a decent attitude toward Gohan. but as soon as Goku returns everything falls apart. Thats why only after Vegeta truly accepts that he will never be Goku and that Goku is stronger than him is he able to be at peace and become a good person.

Character development. That is what really makes Vegeta so fascinating especially because no other character in the show is as complex as he is. Everyone else's motivations stay roughly the same throughout all the sagas. Vegeta, on the other hand, keeps the audience guessing and he keeps the audience impressed by his surprising power and he surprising failures. He is a true underdog who is constantly seeking improvement and that can be inspiring to anyone but his character arcs last entire sagas. Vegeta's inner struggles serve as an over-arching subplot to the main plots and that's very impressive from a screenwriting perspective. Without Vegeta, Dragon Ball would be significantly less interesting and maybe even boring but Vegeta adds the depth and complexity to entertain audiences of all backgrounds.

  • @jonart8433

What I think is fascinating is that Vegeta never lost to Goku but to him he did. It's like when Tien beat Master Roshi in Dragon Ball. Tien didn't feel like he actually won cause Roahi just walked off. Even though Roshi tried to comfort Tien by saying he would have won either way.

Yep. It was failure to actually finish the fight, and his subsequent loss against people her perceived as even lesser fighters that made Vegeta feel like he lost in the end. Because, after all, Goku was the who stopped Krillin and let him live (something that must've felt unbelievably humiliating to Vegeta).

  • @Personal_yt

Something else to add is when vegeta’s majin at the tournament supreme Kai says “the universe matters more than this meaningless squabble” which vegeta replies “MEANINGLESS HUH!? WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF MEANINGLESS!? Spend most of your life ruled by another, watch your race dwindle to a handful, THEN tell me what matters more than your own strength?” It shows us at the core of it all, him and his constant desire for strength is him wanting to never be in that position again where he lives under someone else’s control or watches his family and loved ones be taken away from him. To Vegeta, him being the strongest means he is able to protect himself and the people he cares about.

He could've saved and led his people to glory. So really, he doesn't ever want to be in a scenario where he's that powerless again, and being the strongest (proven by beating Goku) is what's going to help him feel secure in that. In fact, in that same speech, he also cites his resentment for Goku needed to save him as if he were "helpless child."

Vegeta's development in Z is the best character development in any anime i've seen period the amount of years it took for Vegeta to transition from villain to hero was over 10 years and it was gradual in the saiyan saga he was a villain, Freeza saga he was a villain/anti-hero, in android saga he was an anti-hero and finally in the buu arc he was anti-hero briefly (the whole majin Vegeta transformation) finally becoming a hero and the first step he did was self-destruct in order to fix his mistakes and to protect his family and friends to eventually getting a chance to come back and fight buu and prove he is now a hero everything he does after that is selfless he uses the potara knowing it's the ultimate pride test in order to avenge his family, he protects and aids Goku in defeating buu like a true hero rather than caring about himself and finally in the revival scene getting revived for now his journey is complete he has redeemed himself and has become a hero it's such a powerful moment, and the best scene in the whole series imo is Vegeta's monologue and aknowledging Goku is better than him which is Vegeta's ultimate obstacle which he surpasses and that is why Vegeta is soo incredibley iconic and loved cause he's flawed, was arragont, took things ruthlessly. Majin Vegeta was caused due to finding out it's useless to surpass him and just wanted a power boost in order to fullfill his desires the ultimate prideful thing he could do as it causes Buu to revive and causes harm to Supreme Kai and Gohan which then he does the complete opposite at the end doing the most selfless act in admitting that Goku is better and he's done chasing, the Buu arc while flawed imo is Vegeta's conclusion arc realising his journey accepting who he is and becomes proud of he is and what he has. That's something both Vegeta & Sasuke share. They have a much darker and painful past than the main characters and so their extreme trauma shapes their world view and personalities. They have the will & resolve to do the dirty work to get the job done even if it means delving too far into darkness (again due to their serverly traumatic upbringing), they have a point to prove that ends up bigger than just themselves.
Their character development is more than any other character in the show (which is why they are sometimes hated by those who can't understand human psychology and how real life humans behave and loved by those with enough of a brain to empathise with how human psychology works), are much better or elite fighters than their rivals but don't have the protagonist plot to make them as powerful as their rivals regardless of what they do (because they aren't the main character) and in the end both go against their typecast role despite it all & do what's right in the end at the end of their character development.

I was twelve years old watching this show on Toonami when that episode first aired. Vegeta knocking out Trunks and Goten like "OMG he's evil again! No wait...he's telling Piccolo to take them away. What's happening?" Then we get to that moment in all of anime shonen history! The Final Atonement the episode title. I didn't know what that even meant at the time but as he surrounds himself with his own energy, dust flying everywhere, the wind blowing rapidly, I just knew he was going to do the unthinkable. Then he explodes! Everything being engulfed in a blinding flash of light. Vegeta was gone but he went out as he started, a proud warrior. The Prince of Saiyans.
I did not know what compelled me to suddenly go from disliking Vegeta to suddenly loving him after that moment. I knew it had something to do with him dying to save the world but there was more to it and I couldn't figure it out. As I got older, I realized why that was. He's gone through hell, brought everyone he encounted through hell, cast aside his evil ways and accept his new life with his family only to almost throwing it all away again only to come back from the hell he was about to go through again. Very conflicted individual but never truly lost full control the entire time. Was alot different since his Frieza days even as a Majin. Vageta probably coulsnt keep up with Goku because 1 the negativity in his mind discouraged growth, while Goku's positivity makes strength flourish, 2 Goku wasn't obsessed with catching up, and so was much easier on himself, giving himself the rest and food he needed, while vageta wouldn't do so.
You can train harder and more than someone else, but because they rest and eat better and have a more nourishing mind they outgrow you.

    • @Citizen_Nappa23

It's Vegeta and no it was due to the fact Vegeta worked himself to death training. He simply didn't rest enough. Therefore his torn muscles weren't being healed properly and it slowed down his growth. Even Whis hinted upon this in Super your overthinking and over analyzing it Abit.

So, Majin Vegeta was the culmination of all of his past traumas, the bad with Frieza and the rivalry and damage to his pride done by Goku, Gohan, Future Trunks, Cell. And while this evil and rage inside him is surfaced, it’s more than just his rivalry with Goku… he’s fighting all of his past traumas. While he’s majin, he deals with his surfaced traumas while fighting Buu, and his atonement was the destruction of all of that evil (more or less)… he’s not just fighting Buu, which was ultimately born with his energy expended with his fight with Goku… he’s at war with himself. And while he might have lost the fight with Buu, he won the fight within himself.

I think its fitting and very on brand, that vegetas only chance of ever surpassing goku, is getting to the point emotionally that he didn't care anymore or hold any resentments toward goku.
As I've understood it over the years, unlocking super saiyan levels (goten and trunks excluded) always comes with an emotional breakthrough. For goku and gohan it was watching their friends die, and feeling hatred and murderous intent consume them. For Vegeta he unlocks his first level at his moment of feeling worthless, and giving up for the first time in his life. Vegeta really is the most complex character in the dragon ball series.

Mentally breaking down him as a character while it's true he had a degree of Ego due to being raised in Saiyan society he had more of a caring heart even as a boy then he's given credit for. A uncaring bastard doesn't cry, Vegeta has far more caring emotions than a majority of Saiyans. That's why on Namek Goku finally realized, there was more to him and went out of his way to not upset him. And Vegeta was the only one he'd allow call him Kakarot and felt they eventually developed a form of a brother dynamic. But he was traumatized on multiple levels at young age so it took years for him to get past the demons that haunted his childhood. So alo of the times ppl think Vegeta was being aarogant it's actually the opposite. I think it's deeper than that. He struggles inwardly dealing with these emotions.
