Machining brass freehand with a razorblade is the most diresta thing I've seen all month.

Not that anyone asked for it, just had to think of it.

That trick at 11:48 of holding the tap vertical with the drill press is inspired. This is what I like about your vids Jimmy!
I think this video is a good example of why historically people leave grumpy comments on CNC videos. We are all spoiled with being able to see the high-level of craftsmanship as it's happening. Not that the craftsmanship isn't there in CNC projects, it's just much less visible.

  • @springwoodcottage4248

Interesting design & materials with elegant, gentle & decisive execution on the lathe. In the UK gavels are often made of Box wood, both the head & the base, but this has a more higher pitched component to it which is interesting. Just hope the judge does not forget where his/her non-hammer hand is when dealing with disorders in court and clouts it by mistake. If ever does will not need reminding a second time. Thanks for sharing!

  • @troyam6607

Hey Jimmy! if you put some tape around the end of your tool on the lathe when doing brass the chips will just fall down not fly everywhere. just wrap it around the end and start a cut it will tear only where the tip is

  • @Dopefish76

The style of the video (not to mention the end product itself) reminded me of the hardwood mallet you did for Make in 2013. I dunno if maybe I have a thing with mallets, but I found myself feeling that same sense of “where is this going? 😃” and then that big payoff where it all *clicks*. For those wondering, this is Classic DiResta 🤘🏻

Cool project! Always learn something watching your vids- your use of a razor to finish curves was unique. Great to hear of the special offer with Starrett. Still producing quality tools here. When allowed take a plant tour. In the meantime NYC CNC filmed one a few years ago. (We have added considerable amount of modern machinery, but still have some old ones producing)!

Of all the amazing tools he has in his shop, Jimmy uses a razor blade to fine tune the shape of the brass. I kept hoping he wasn't going to cut himself on it.
    EDIT: Brass, not bronze.
