"Too Dark"... That was the best sound and placement she made. The voice was freer, better enunciated, balanced and had a more open throated action. As long as the voice is free, efficient and well supported the "too dark" sound would not be an issue. As long as the singer is taught to ascend the scale correctly. Darkness and open throat are interconnected. Depressed singing is dark, but not the same way. I would have thought Shicoff to have a better ear. His suggestions are not great. He lets the singers close off and constrict as they ascend the scale. The African girls sound is hard and pushed forward. She could make a lot better sound. She doesn't support so well either. You do not lift for warmth you go for the right vowel sound.
I had the privilege of watching Nombulelo live and it was breathtaking. She literally has the voice of an angel.
