Agreed. Neil Shicoff’s performance in La Juive at the Metropolitan Opera in 2003 was electrifying. I vividly recall that when it aired live on radio, longtime broadcast host Peter Allen was audibly choked up after the opera’s shocking and deeply moving conclusion.
Correcting my comment (after listening just now to my recording of the 12/13/2003 live radio broadcast): The point at which Mr. Allen got movingly emotional was when, in summarizing the final act, he related that when Cardinal Brogni asks the doomed Eléazar where his own daughter can be found, Eléazar points to the cauldron of boiling water into which Rachel has just plunged and replies, "There she is!" It was an unforgettable and cherished broadcast at multiple levels.
