At the end of an esplanade nestled in a quiet cul de sac lies Shearwater House, the last home in the street and it seems it saved the best til last. You can’t help but stop and admire this unique exterior with its playful and inviting curves. Located in Shearwater, a popular Summer holiday destination in Northern Tasmania. This new build was designed by Cumulus Studio to be a contemporary coastal, entertainer’s home that sits harmoniously with its environment.
The homeowners wanted to elevate the property which meant that Cumulus Studio needed to navigate the overall proportions of the home. Their challenge was to achieve a substantial view over the front lying sand dunes without making the building too high. With a raised elevation, 5 steps lead you from the front entry to the ground floor, achieving a view without being obtrusive.
To help soften the elevated silhouette, mirrored curves were introduced throughout the exterior roof line and ground floor brickwork. The natural timber cladding also adds to complement and blend into the landscape. During the build, a few mature gum trees were retained to help the building settle in its context and these trees are visible throughout, reflecting the pattern of existing buildings along the esplanade.
The interior welcomes a relaxed, coastal style with natural timbers and neutral colour palette creating an overall warm aesthetic. Fine timber joinery has been superbly crafted with a practical and well oriented kitchen layout and storage. Overwhelmingly, this home had a sense of warmth and energy, clearly a much loved and enjoyed home.

I used to live in shearwater and we would often walk past shearwater esplanade just to check out this house and a couple others. If you are in the area you should drive a few minutes to Hawley esplanade for some even more incredibly luxurious homes. Not bad for little ole north west Tassie.
Can't wrap my head around why you'd need two kitchens, or how to even use them both, but I guess it's just cause I'm poor haha ! Really love the upstairs kitchen with the rich wood and the white having just the right contast, and they've done a really great job making the most out of this incredible view !!!
The one down stairs attends the gallery and the entertaining area. There are two different moments on that house. I loved that.
The homeowners mentioned that they mainly occupy the upstairs living for most of the time. It's when their son comes home and family / friends get together that the downstairs area is utilised for entertaining

Probably my all time favourite house that you've ever shown us. I love it! It is so well thought out and as you said the finish and curves just add to it's appeal.
One question though, you only showed 2 bedrooms. Surely there are more than 2 bedrooms as it looks like it has a whole wing out the back?
We showed into three bedrooms, the homeowners are a couple that occupy upstairs and downstairs is for their son and guests. But yes, there was so much space and we didn't show you out the back, but this was just the garage!

Beautiful house ...but don't understand the functionality of two big living rooms with kitchens in the same house... scope for adding one more big bed room by modifying the floorplan a little bit....also a master bathroom with no tub ....I would much rather convert the downstairs bath to a powder room and add room for a tub instead of two giant sinks in the master bathroom
If there is no neighbours to the left, why isn't there more windows or a balcony/terrace to enjoy the views?
The land next door is public garden/park, so they've kept some privary and focused on the view of the water out the front

It looks like a house owned by a corportion. No personality, no art, no warmth.... Sterile and empty, never lived in by humans. Random collection of furniture and other interior c#@p screaming '2020', that in a couple of years will look dated and in need of 'updating'. The architect did a very good job though.
