I Made A Yarn Bowl From Scratch

A client of mine wanted to have a yarn bowl custom made for her, using an expensive piece of wood. The bowl itself is a simple project. Cutting out the swirly slot for the yarn adds a layer of complexity and I thought it best to make a prototype first, using a less expensive piece of wood.
I selected a beautiful piece of Ambrosia Maple and it turned very nicely. I used a coping saw with a spiral blade to cut the shape. That required a lot of hand sanding. After I got the wood perfectly smooth, I used Ack's Wood Paste, which is a two part finish consisting of a sanding paste and a polishing paste. The finish enhanced the wood dramatically, bringing out the rich colors of the Ambrosia Maple and it created an ultra-smooth finish needed to ensure the yarn will glide smoothly on the wood.
All in all, this was a rewarding project and I look forward to diving into the commission piece next.
