Shocking Transformation! I Revived the Purple in Purple Heart Wood
I sell a lot of cutting boards using accent strips of Purple Heart. My customers absolutely love it. The down side is, Purple Heart fades over time. Looking at my inventory of Purple Heart, I noticed it had faded dramatically. The color was pretty blah. I stumbled upon a simple technique to revive the beautiful purple color and I had to conduct an experiment to see for myself. Does this technique really bring the color back? In the future, I will use this technique to ensure my Purple Heart is looking amazing in my cutting boards.

I saw another woodworker use direct flame to do the same. Quicker and less gas. Try it on a scrap and see if it does what you want. Very deep purple.
Thanks! I will give it a try.
Amazingly beautiful color transformation!! Thx for sharing!!
Thank you Mark!
Amazing ❤

Thanks for sharing this Derek! As you showed the walnut piece I was like: wow, that’s a great, unique looking walnut. Then you showed the redwood and I wasn’t so impressed…until to sprayed it! Then WOW! Amazing.
Thank you Skyler. I’m really excited about that walnut! It’s amazing how the redwood popped when I sprayed it. It came to life!
Excellent video, so helpful! ❤ Look forward to seeing the next two!
Thank you!
Hi Derek, great video. Can you please add a link to your Dremmel bit you use to clean the wood?

Very nice description! Keep up the great content Derek!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Very interesting video!! Thx for sharing!! I’ve always found woodworking very interesting but never pursued it.
Thanks for watching and commenting Mark!
Really enjoyed this video!! It depends on what kind of wood is used for a specific project. But I like the 3 steps versus the 1 because as you stated in your video the extra steps makes the colors pop more.
Thank you Mark! Much appreciated!
Hi Derek, thank you for doing this for us. I have to admit. I have all those products but never thought of doing such a thorough comparison . Sometimes it’s worth taking the extra step. The tung oil penetrates deep into the wood giving it more protection from inside ( keeping the wood from warping from moisture changes in outside environment). Tung oil also dries and cures to a harder finish protecting from scratches. The wax finish will give it depth ( as an oil finish looks pretty matte), a beautiful shine and also adds extra protection as carnauba is a very hard wax. The wax will lock in the oil and keeps the finish looking nice for longer.
I enjoyed this little experiment. I’ve not used Tung Oil before so it was interesting to see how it behaved with the different woods. I do like how it penetrated. I was impressed, actually. That final step using your Carnauba Wood Finish & Polish added that little extra something. Thanks for creating your amazing finishes and for following along!
Grest experiment ❤
Beautiful craftsmanship ❤
Thank you!
Amazing how the two grains are running in different directions stuff like that amazes me wood is so beautiful. We recently sanded our kitchen table to bring out the wood grain. Not a special wood just looks way nicer.
Hi Mike!n good to see you! Wood is truly amazing. I’ll bet your table looks much better. Way to go!
Was is it worth it??? Depends on how much it cost. I’m halfway through the video and this key piece of info hasn’t been disclosed. Checked the comments as well. …. Ok $135 mentioned at the 2:38 mark. So about $13 a piece.
Hi Mark! This worked out well for me and plan on picking up a few more boxes.
Check out my friends channel. She bought quite a few of these boxes. th-cam.com/video/WzONN3dvp1A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Cg00ctQPANhNrywY
That pearl is such a gorgeous contrast. Yes! Fast forward through certain chores! 😂
Thanks so much! I’m glad you like it!
Your tools are pretty cool, too, Derek! So frustrating to have tools not work they way you need them to function. Great work around!
Thank you! It is frustrating when tools don’t work right. Turning wood uses some fine motor skills. When your tool doesn’t glide on the tool rest properly, you’re now fighting the tool. Not good. Thanks for watching!
When my Powermatic tool rest gets bumps on it I use a metal file to smooth it and then sandpaper to make it slippery.
Thanks Jeff! I pulled out my files this afternoon, in anticipation of seeing what I can do with it. A follower just shared a this link. It’s a method of adding a heat treated rod to the top of your existing tool rest. It’s an inexpensive fix. Here’s the link d-waytools.com/tool-rest-top-bars/
Now I want a lathe…..
I can hardly wait for you to get a lathe Skyler. I’m sure you’ll be an amazing wood turner!
Thank you Derek! Great video 🥰 The 8/4 at the end of the video is quilted maple, the figure can be very similar to curly cherry but it is maple. Thanks again for your support! We appreciate you.
Thank you for the clarification! And thank you for putting together these amazing boxes. They are wonderful!
What auction site did you buy the wood from? I also bought a "mystery box" from Northwest Timbers.....it was a terrific assortment of maple, walnut, and cherry.....plus two burls!
This actually came from eBay. That’s normally not my go to site, but I’ve had some success with spalted maple and Buckey Burl. On Facebook, check out Burls & Wood Blanks Auctions and Sales. They constantly have nice offerings.
Beautiful as are all of the projects you've posted. I do have a random question: what laser power/speed settings are you using for the engraving? I know they will vary from wood to wood, but whenever I've tried this on some of my pieces, I find it burns down more than it leaves a visible mark. I have a 10W Xtool. Love what you're doing, don't be afraid to show some more turning as well.
Thank for following along Tony! With my 10W Xtool, I’m running 72 power and 80-85speed. Hope that helps. I’ve had great success with those settings. I’ve got some bowl blanks coming in today. I bought more Etimoe, which is such a beautiful wood. It’s well mannered on the lathe and it finishes so well. I have an Etimoe platter in one of my videos. Have a great day!
I watched the Etimoe video as well. It is stunning. I've never heard of it but with your endorsement I'll be watching out for it. Thank you so much for the reply. I'll be giving those settings some testing in my own shop.
@@tonyblanco305 Awesome! Good luck! If you want to find some Etimoe, let me know and I'll share my vendor with you.
Look forward to see your creations from all this wood ❤
I have so many cool ideas! Hmmm, will I sleep tonight or not. 🙂
Great instructional video ❤
Thank you! Im thoroughly enjoying creating these videos! It reminds me of our 25 years of farming and homesteading, teaching others the things we learned from our successes and failures. The only difference is, this is through video as opposed to all the in person classes we taught. I do wish we had high speed internet then. You and I could have shared so much hard fought knowledge.
Derek, this is my favorite video of yours. I learned so much. I have about 5 trays from crafted elements. I didn’t know I needed spray release, I didn’t know I need a vacuum chamber ( what size you would recommend)? I really like the template trick. Never saw that before! So glad I didn’t try to do a resin project yet, obviously I still need to learn so much! Thank you
Thank you Skyler! That means a lot. When I started my journey into working with resin, I watched so many videos. Too many, really. I walked away feeling frustrated, all too many times. I see a need for better education, which is what you do on your amazing page. I've always been the person to experiment and then share my successes and failures. Kathy and I did this for 25 years on our farm and homestead. As a guy that's brand new to sharing content on TH-cam, your input helps me decide what content I should create. I think I should do something like a resin master class, taking people on a journey for the beginning to the end. Possibly do that over a number of videos. I can't wait to see what you create. I know you'll do an amazing job, with your artistic abilities. Feel free to ask questions. I always want my friends and followers to excel in their endeavors!
Derek , that’s an awesome idea. It could be as a mini series. How to successfully make an epoxy project. Starting with tools you need and links where to buy them, set up , stage be stage…. Designing the project is a big one. I have 5 resin trays and tons of wood. I kept looking at all my stuff and have no idea how to make a pleasant design. It’s such a foreign world. So far my only experience with resin was doing small inlay ( success rate 20% as I always had problems with bubbles), and feeling knots holes ( success rate 40%) as the resin shrunk and had to plane half of the thickness of my board. I watched a lot of TH-cam but I still hon idea on how to prep the wood for resin, what kind of resin is best ( I bought 4 gallons of resin a year ago thinking I was going to do a river table) it turns out I bought table top resin that is not deep pour…. We need guidance and information
Great suggestions Skyler! I think a mini series is perfect. I’ve been thinking about this since our chat yesterday and I’ve got lots of ideas that I’ll put down on paper. The. I can schedule some time to create this series. In the meantime, since I’m pouring some projects later today, I’ll share with you privately some process to get you going. You’ll be surprised how easy it is.
