  • This video explains how to strip and rebuild the Triumph Tiger/Sport 1050 starter motors T1310605 and T1311114. I carried out this work whilst researching the Triumph hot starting problem which seems to afflict many modern Triumph motorcycles. More information related to my findings and the findings of other owners similarly afflicted can be found in the following links

    Great video..my only concern here is when you showed how to do the ohms test and then you later showed the carbon build-up between the commutator contacts where the brushes make contact with the motor,would it be wiser to clean between the gaps before testing for the ohms readings first thus avoiding false readings!!.

    Where can I get the proper rebuild kit or part #? I recently purchased one (SND9127 from ebay UK), but the brushes were in the opposite positions then the original. Which in turn made my starter run clockwise instead of anti clockwise. 2005 speed triple 1050. Any info would be appreciated.

      I’m not sure about a source for the brushes but if you Google it, I’m sure you’ll find something - they are definitely advertised.
      It’s been a while now since I did this job - can you modify the new brushes to work with your old backplate???? It’s only really the brushes you need anyway

      @@ybliga yes that is what I did, i modified it and used the old brush plate witth the new brushes from the kit. I dont understand why the kits advertised on ebay uk are incorrect. If you look at the original brush plate, the earth brush is to your left, but the one in the kit is to the right. So when installed that way, the motor runs clockwise and not anticlockwise. Anyways thank you sir. I made mine work, I was just hoping perhaps you had a better part # even for the proper rebuild kit. Thanks

    great vid, I imagine this is a similar starter to the speed triple 1050?

      It depends on the vintage - I have a 2019 Speed Triple RS and it’s a different model of starter but I suspect the internal architecture is the same as the older models.
      If you’re talking an older speed triple, I expect the starter was the same as on the tiger of the same vintage - that said, the part number is on the starter body anyway

      @@ybliga Thanks for reply. Its a 2010 se.Hot start issue, Im also thinking the the voltage regulator (just replaced it) is getting hot from engine heat, possibly relocating it?

    • @ybliga
      @ybliga  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@linzkirk voltage regulator is SCR shunt type and they get very hot in their own right - it’s not from engine heat.
      Better bet May he to switch it out for a better mosfet series regulator such as a shindengen SH775 - they are more reliable and won’t get as hot. However, the main benefit is from protecting the stator against burnout.

      @@ybliga Thanks for fast reply, mine failed 3 months ago and I just replaced it with a genuine triumph one at £180. I would of tried the SH775 if I had of known at the time. probably a lot cheaper too

    • @ybliga
      @ybliga  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@linzkirk genuine triumoh is SCR shunt type and rather crude. SH775 will cost about the same but doesn’t get as hot and also protects against stator failures but LOTS of fakes on eBay for around £60 which don’t last 5 minutes.

    How many teeth does this starter have?

    • @ybliga
      @ybliga  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t now remember and I no longer have it.
      Triumph upgraded the sprag clutch on the 2007-12 Tiger 1050 and the sprag upgrade kit included a new starter motor and I’m fairly confident the new starter has one more or (I believe) one less teeth on its spline than the old one and this they are incompatible with each other. Old starter part number for original sprag and idler gear, updated starter for new sprag kit.
      If you buy a replacement at any point, take the part number off your old starter!!!
      If you are asking because you are wondering if your internals are the same then having stripped them both, I can confirm the insides are basically identical
