    I am riding a 2013 Tiger xc800.
    In 2018 a deer run into my way i hit it at about 85 km/h and i hit the ground hard.
    The deer was dead.
    The Triumph standard crashbar saved my leg.
    Shifter and brake lever was bent.
    I still can see the scratches in the tarmac my tiger left.
    I bent the levers straight, and put on some paint and that was it. Absolute nothing was broken on this bike.
    I can not confirm any of the complains in this video (maybe i am just lucky).
    I love my tiger :-)

    Regarding crash bars, I truly recommend Outback motortek. These guys are just amazing with what they do and they have addressed exactly the issues you have pointed out.

    Thank you for this video and having bought an 800xca new in 2018, I agree with these 5. Related to the crash bars issue is the low and wide placement of the front turn signals. The Triumph upper crash bar design isn't strong enough to protect the turn signals, which will be broken in a tip over, along with the plastic fairing near the tank, as you mentioned. I agree the Heed bars seem to offer a better option, and note the new Tiger 900 has the front turn signals placed higher and inset, where they need to be on an offroad-focussed bike. Ride safe.

    • @BornAGoon
      @BornAGoon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes the turn signals suck. I replaced the front ones after the first crash. Even my speed triple turn signals fell off after 3 months. I guess its not a triumph unless it has bad turn signals

    • @roam5984
      @roam5984 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Born A Goon what signals did you replace them with? I still have the stock signals on mine, but considering smaller leds. I forgot to mention the air filter placed under the fuel tank-ridiculous on a bike doing any dirt here in Australia. I replaced the airbox snorkel with a Unifilter pre-filter, but even so, the main filter is poorly located for ease of cleaning/ maintenance.

    This is not an off road bike. It’s an adventure bike. That mean you could take some unpaved roads sometimes in your trip, doesn’t mean it’s made to go out to do hard off road. There’s so many better bikes to do this purpose you wanna.

    • @BornAGoon
      @BornAGoon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sure there are better bikes for this but I wouldnt be a goon if I was on a 450, besides isnt it nice to see what it can do since most owners would never even try this?

    The plastic trim on the side of the tank is designed to be sacrificial, a drop or 2 and they are meant to be replaced. You can always get the 8 gallon safari tank. PS, it is top heavy even with an empty tank compared to a T7 and 1290 adv R with full tanks.
    For costs be glad it's not a polaris. Some of their ATVs have fuel pumps that go out, but to fix it you have to buy a complete $1200 fuel tank.
    My tiger is a 2013 and has 104k miles on it. It's great on the road, does fine on fire roads and if I want to get more serious offroad I have a dirt bike.

    I did get the Heed bars on my 14' 800xc, much better. I am older now and very tall, my off road days are over, I put some Scorpion II tires on it and now I just cruise it mostly, it is comfortable for my height and is really a fantastic road bike. One thing I do not like is switching the rider modes, PITA. 40k miles and counting... Great Video!

    I have a 2019 800XRT and love it. I am in the process of changing the position of the front indicators which are a design flaw!
    When I spent well over £12K on my XRT I knew it wouldn't be going off road, maybe a green lane but nothing more.
    I doubt most XRT owners do much off roading, it is after all the road biased version!
    I am still getting used to having cruise control, heated grips and heated rider&pillion seats and back lit controls!
    For my riding the XRT is great but yóur points are valid for serious off roading. I'd hate to drop mine as it's loadsamoney to repair!

    Great video! You may not know but actually you helped me a lot in my choice back in January! After long searching I stopped on Tiger 800 XCA, 3000 mile from February till now! I would add number 6 design problem.... the signal lights! I didn’t have the tank bar and dropped the bike from a stop position and the whole plastic frame around it cracked... anyway, absolutely love the bike and finally decided to start my own TH-cam channel too! Great video as always! In the future can you give some tips on how to ride those big, heavy machines off-road? Newbie here!

    The rigid plastic turn signals irritate the jeebus outta me. I had to replace the entire r/h front signal because someone brushed past it in a car park and snapped the damn thing off. The lamp and housing were fine, just the stem was cracked, as it ain't that strong. The design of the thing meant 70 bucks gone for something pretty simple.

    2014 800xc__ What i hate is the master fuse/solenoid sits at the bottom of the sump and the turn signal's lenses aren't sold alone! wish the low fender had more space from the tire, the mud and gravel can and does lock up the tire. Taking off the tank is a pain in the ass with the lack of slack in the wires connecting to it( I extended mine a few inches ). You need a computer to balance your throttle bodies(actually this made it easy with the program). ABS sensors will get dirty and until they're clean you wont have ABS( possibly not even a speed reading). So far, my favorite bike!

    Great video. Good points. There's a couple of other design flaws:
    The fuel filter is built into the fuel pump and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire unit.
    Also to change/clean the air filter you have to remove the fuel tank and some body work. Not a quick job when you're on a dusty road.
    It seems like they basically took a road bike and added adventure parts. Don't get me wrong I've had my 2016 XRT for 2 years and 60,000 Km and love it. It is such a capable bike on the highway, twisties and off-road. These are just niggles.

    I'm really surprised no one has mentioned the non existent steering lock to lock. My BMW RT (barge) turns way tighter than my Tiger. It's Ducats-esque.
    Next , why does a bike that has a ton of torque, have a super close ratio trans, with a high first gear?
    They could have made first lower and spread out the rest.
    But like you, it's still my favorite, amongst 5.

    Dropped my 2018 XcX in the sand in Death Valley. My front fairing/display is now slightly crooked because the 2 brackets he discusses holding the front section bent on impact. I haven't taken apart to see what it would take to bend it back...just going to live with it. No doubt that both my Africa Twin and my GS were more durable on crashing as one drop damaged multiple plastic parts on this bike in ways that would not have happened on either of my previous rides.

    Yeah! good review, valid points you make, I bought a new a 2014 model, before I bought it I knew there were things I was going to change/improve on. Tank was the first, I didn't want to damage the shiny new, painted metal one! Solution a plastic Safari 30 Litre one, made here in Australia, range at touring speed 600 Kilometers. Secondly Bark Busters also Australian made, thirdly decent Aluminium bash plate, chain guide and guard. Took off the original rubber and replaced with Mitas E07 front and rear. Let me just say This is NOT a single-track bike, fine if you are 190 cm but anyone short(er) forget, it is just too heavy. For me it was a great outback tourer, Flinders Rangers, some Victorian High country, outback NSW and QLD. Yeah, sure there are negatives, every bike has them, I enjoyed my 800 whilst i owned it, now, it's gone to another owner!

    • @BornAGoon
      @BornAGoon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you watched the video, I believe I stated several times that I was using the bike outside of its described usage, and in every video, I have ever done, I never once blamed Triumph. I have done nothing but brag about their reliability like in this video here th-cam.com/video/Py2BpgIEK3E/w-d-xo.html, and this one where I did read the manual and made fun of myself th-cam.com/video/4gwLGWCwDSA/w-d-xo.html, All of the complaints in this video, were not related to hardcore enduro. For example, the crash bars mount to a casted aluminum part of the engine that can be broken in a parking lot. The headlights use a plastic mount that, if broken, is a 400 replacement. That Triumph puts an aluminum chain protector on a dedicated street bike but a plastic one on an adventure bike. Or that the subframe and passenger pegs are one unit. These complaints have nothing to do with off-road they can happen anywhere. If anything, I am probably the best ambassador for Triumph reliability and capability since not many use the bike like this, and that is a testament to Triumph

    Well I’ve had for the last few years BMW’s until I got my Tiger 800 nearly a year ago.
    I’ve got to say yes it’s not a perfect motorcycle but unlike the BMW’s I’ve had I’m able to do my service easily, nothing had gone wrong at all, yes it’s a bit heavy but nothing like my previous tractor like gsa’s. It’s not an off-road bike per say but boy compared to the bm’s on my little gravelly off roads here in north uk it great. The gearbox is so slick not clumpy like my bm’s the weight I find doesn’t bother me the techy bits I don’t use, the motor is superb, what else I dunno it’s a great bike spare’s easily sourced.

    Why would someone take a $13,000 motorcycle off road? Why would someone believe this bike was meant to be ridden in the back country? Because they saw a promo video of a professional racer ripping it in the desert and the woods! Because people are obsessed with gathering knowledge but don't care about understanding, about having good sense. The same people who would take this bike or its big brother off road are the people who can look up at the sky, and explain why the rain is falling and how the lightening is manifested across the sky but they stand there and get soaked and struck by lightening because they don't have the sense to get out of it. These are not design flaws. Triumph laughs at every sucker that buys this bike for "adventuring"...they laugh all the way to the bank. I had this bike. I rode it on the road, not in the woods. It was an awesome bike. I never had it fail on any of these points, and I am guessing if I would have kept it for 100K miles, I never would have had it fail on any of these points. Why not buy a used dual sport for $4,000 and thrash it? Even buy a new one for $6,000 and ride it anywhere. If they total their dual sport, they just buy another used one and go ripping some more. Don't drop any bike or crash it. It is going to break, and that is not a design flaw. That is a rider flaw.

    • @BornAGoon
      @BornAGoon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A KTM 450 or any 450 will cost you 12,000. The design flaws mentioned are all problems if you dumped the bike in a parking lot. All manufatures laugh at us because only pros can ride these bikes to their fullest potential anyway and if you think about it everybody thinks motorcyclists are dangerous and stupid. Why do I take a 13k bike of road and thrash it, well, because I can. Also the the name of my channel is Born A Goon, not Born A Logical person

    First of all, amazing job! Love your content! I have a Tiger just like yours from 2019, I am reaching 8000km and I noticed that my bike is consuming the oil. In the other day I saw that I couldn't see any oil from the eye glass. I use to ride in cruise pace (don't have your skill ahah), so I don't think it is from riding it hard. The dealer sad that is normal for the tiger 800 to consume oil, but I'm not convinced. So I wonder if notice that on yours? Thanks man! Keep doing these amazing videos!

  • @andistraumann
    @andistraumann ปีที่แล้ว

    The biggest design flaw in my opinion are the indicators/blinkers position.
    Even with a bigger crashbar from outback-motorteck they are breaking when you lay the bike down standing still. Which can happen even if you don't go offroad.
    I removed my blinkers and used the handguards from SW-Motech which have integrated blinkers as option. The handguadrds plastic are not so durable if you crasch in dirt but can be replaced for 30-40€/$. The hole on the side of the tiger where the blinkers where, I have filled them with a printed part in silver and if you dont know it you would't recognize it to be a foreign part. (Scaned the surface to have it perfectly flush... If anybody would like the data i could provide)

    Triumph states these bikes are for light off road duties only ( think made dirt roads). Using it as suggested I have ridden my 2015 Tiger 800XCx across Australia twice fully loaded. Yes, I have broken some plastics too. Cost me $500 AU ( 300 US). Was it worth it? Yes I love the bike too. BTW I have a Suzuki DRZ 400E model with a 30L Safari tank fitted. The same feeling regarding fuel load exists when it is full, so I wouldn't consider it a design flaw at all. You just ride accordingly until the level drops down a bit.

      How does it fair on a big ride like that? Across Australia, all tarmac or dirt too? I’ve the last XCX and wondering if foolish to try and overland it in LatAm. Too fragile? By 2019 it’s refined and mature mechanically right? I just rode mine fairly aggressively for 8 hours solid 90% constant twisties in NZ … puuuuurs. Comfortable, capable, but does it only belong within a tow truck ride to the Triumph dealership?

      @@steve.afendoulis My trip was 60/40 tarmac / dirt. I rode across the Nullabor with a bit of dirt in the Gawler ranges , then up towards Geraldton. We hit the dirt and headed east, which was 90% dirt until we hit the East coast. Some was rough, some was smooth. The Tiger handled it fine. Tow trucks were used for 2 KTM 690 and a SWM 650. I would take a smaller bike to Latin America though. Fragility issues? The headlight and surrounding plastics ( annoying) , and rear frame can break if you dump it hard enough ( need a good welder).

    ABS plastic, not PVC. Poor design/ finicky to get back together around the tank and radiator. I had rust issues inside the metal tank after filling with contaminated fuel. The fuel filter caught the rust, and the fuel pump kept working. I was not able to buy a new filter from Triumph, but the whole filter/pump at $400US approximately. I used a $80 unit from California instead. I add more flaws; Triumph used ball bearings in the steering head, not roller bearings. Very weak/ thin front fender attachment point that rocks caught in side knobs of the tyre will rotated around and smash the fender support. Using 15 mm Touratech riser kits still breaks. I found a guy in NSW OZ who 3D printed up a ABS riser kit. It broke sacrificially rather then the fender.
    Then the position of the main fuse under the battery is stupid. It gets wet and dusty down there and the fuse block corrodes= dead engine. It shows that Triumph did not intend the Tiger to be used in rugged off road conditions. Fine for Europe, not ideal for USA or OZ or South Africa. it will do it, but it is cosmetically fragile.
