  • We are back with the 3 lines transmission fault, this time it caused total failure of the car requiring AA recovery.
    Many thanks to the AA engineer for offering outstanding service today.
    Previously it had:
    Full removal of wiring loom from transmission module to clutch actuator & gear motor - continuity tested ok.
    Replacement clutch actuator.
    Clean poor connection between engine earth strap and engine.
    Wrap wiring loom near battery to resolve chaffing of loom against sharp body edges.
    Previous fault codes:
    N15/6 Sprintshift control module (2 DTCs)
    P1800 Implausible transmission data.
    P2802 Signals from incremental sensor of component 'M17 (Gear motor)' are implausible.
    N47-5 (ESP control unit) (1 DTC)
    Fault in CAN communication with control module 'N15/6 (Sprint shift control module)'.
    Fault code today:
    P1801 Transmission adaptation - increment sensor in transmission unit faulty.

    Thank you for suffering for all of us 451 owners. After you take a break, and if you're not too angry with the car, I'm looking forward to following your next repair.

    Hey, Chin up its great that you keep facing into this. I have followed as I have a similar issue. Last job I cleaned up all the earth points and no fault for ....... well just shy of 300 miles but it then got to into a kangaroo start thing felt OK then for a few miles until a roundabout where it just didn't pick a gear and I end up sat across fast moving traffic. Good luck hope you have hit on the issue. I am fitting a new actuator this weekend.

    Sorry to hear this .... I have one sorta like that too. Spent way too much for a shop to repair mine after it was sitting for months; drove it about 3 months and again, it is dead. Not a horrid deal but I have to tow it 2 1/2 hours to the only shop that works on these. I am seriously considering selling it after the next repair is completed - to someone closer to MB shop. But I do enjoy this silly little car!

    Sorry im a few days late seeing your video. If your still having problems getting it to go into reverse try this. start the car foot on break, take it from park to drive, count to 3, then go from drive to reverse. see if that works.
    I dont know why, but my lil car makes me do this about every 3-4 weeks. lol
    But, that is how ive learned to deal with it. The shop says there is nothing wrong with it... I just think my little smart car likes to tick me off when im in a hurry sometimes. lol
    Hope it helps you out, if not, maybe it will help someone down the road.
    Keep driving smart !

    Gone are the days of chasing problems until you finally see the break in the spring on the ballast resistor.
    Speaking of resistors . . . Easiest way to clear codes.
    Disconnect positive then negative and place a cheap resistor between them for half an hour . . . Most times this will clear all the codes and then you can step through retraining the car

    Today I had this same problem in Halfords car park when I went to buy wiper blades for it.
    Exactly how you described it it happened. I was just about able to bring it home.
    I'm thinking to myself if I should drop a Honda 1.6 out of a crx (non VTEC) in it or not.
    Too many electronics will eventually turn into a Jinn with a honda I KNOW this will never happen again, plus it's already a130 bhp and I have EVERYTHING.
    It should go like the brabus after tuning, but without spending an additional £1k+ for mapping the engine and the gearbox plus the cost of fixing this jinn.
    Summer is here and if I do, guys will make a video on how to.

    I had this very same issue with my 2008 smart. I've been towed from the middle of the street multiple times. I replaced the clutch actuator everything was working then, a week later this happened to me, i put 3 new clutch's then the same problems back-to-back. I worked on this for about 6 months buying and replacing parts until I had to clean and lubricate the original clutch. It's been working for 2 years now.

    I have a 2008 451,bought new 75k miles now. Had it stuck in park once, towed. Biggest problem was motor mounts. They fail and the motor jumps about and it killed the main battery cable, the exhaust flex coupling and who knows what else. Have replaced the starter, the alternator, front springs, motor mounts, exhaust, battery cable and recently the brake lines that rusted thru where they are clamped to the chassis. The best failure was the park cable that had the end fail and fell off the lever. At least it came off taking it out of park. Annoying little things to be sure and here in the states no one wants to work on them cept the MB dealer. $$$.. A rebirth for these cars has come from drag racers that buy them to use as golf carts. They fit inside their trailers and they use them to tow the cars round the pits, then off the motel. Still selling for 1/2 the original price.

    Oh man that's suffering! No doubt once truly sorted that car will be your most prized possession. I also think, with these cars now beginning to show their age, owners with less skill and patience will be keeping the scrap dealers busy. Rest up, clear your mind, and give us another fab vid.

    That's hardship, I have the same model and expect this type of trouble sooner or later. On the plus side I think you have finally nailed the problem. The removal of the motor is apparently easy (airbox out and four torque bolts). I would be tempted to disassemble the motor, as it could be as simple as worn brushes. Best of luck with it, its hard to keep the faith when it keeps giving trouble, but I think you are almost there.

    Ok...joking but true nonetheless! Bugger mate...you really are going through hell with her... she's not a cheap date for sure
    I'm watching every video many times over. Last summer I stripped mine down to a bare shell, easily and confidently thanks to your earlier videos.
    This year when this infernal rain ceases and spring is sprung I intend to do some more preventive maintenance in the vain hope I never encounter problems such as yours.
    Things to check or change...reluctor discs, motor mount, startenator bushing, gear selector and actuator.
    So please continue your superb videos... eventually you'll have changed everything and all will be right with the world! 😂😂❤

    Mine is a 2009 Cabrio. Parts replaced when mine died: TCM, SAM, Gear shifter, Gear Actuator, and Clock Spring under the steering wheel. Turned out to be a chaffed wire harness in the steering column. I literally paid for the car twice. Once to buy it and once again, the same amount, to fix it. Fingers crossed, it has been 8k miles without problems. Let’s be honest… The car was the idea of a Swiss fashion watch maker; designed by Mercedes; and built in France with a Mitsubishi motor… What could possibly go wrong?🙄

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Can I ask exactly where the wiring was chaffed on the steering column? There is a wad of self adhesive felt around the sharp edges of the column on mine where the loom passes over it. I did look at that.

    • @darrenfox5883
      @darrenfox5883 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was a loom that ran either next to or on top of the steering column. My mechanic said that he thought that it was the steering column itself that had worn through the loom.

    • @darrenfox5883
      @darrenfox5883 8 หลายเดือนก่อน
