  • WHAT CAN WE EXPECT for the FUTURE of Squad? OWI hosted a live-stream Q&A with devs to discuss some things they are working on and what may be on the way for the game. We're going to breakdown some of their answers including Commander updates, upcoming factions, close air support helicopters and anit-aircraft weapons. While this is straight from Offworld Industries, I also give my own impressions on some of their answers and I think new players as well as veterans will be happy to hear about some of what they have planned for the future of the game.     I cannot be more excited for this commander overhaul, its drastically needed. The commander hasnt been touched since alpha v0.17. It cant come sooner

    A parachute drop ability for the VDV commander would be awesome, especially being able to deploy a vehicle that is para drop capable

      @@deemwinchSquard era timeline for most of the airbourne units has had modern day drops. Paradrops in Squad could be potentially amazing if balanced and player base uses it correctly.

    I feel like only giving thermals to commander sights with no guns is a cheap and bad way to fix a problem. Armour can be balanced imo with the implementation of more realistic vics. Crews being protected from rounds that penetrate and should realistically kill them is one thing to fix. If getting hit is more punishing and armour is scared of infantry, things like thermals, APS, FCS etc will be balanced. Instead of HP bases systems, make it so crew kills are also a way to disable a tank. The APS thermals and FCS should be balanced so that they protect the tank and crew as long as they arent being flanked which they can achieve with infantry presence in the area. And with the addition of attack helis and Javelins etc, armour that chooses to sit at the edge of the map all alone or out in the open, is vulnerable.

      what about up time I mean half the fun of Vic’s is the repair when getting shot at the more you impair a Vic the worse it feels to play, as a quote VCO armor may have a little bitch and moan moment as well as thermals on gunsights would put massive advantage into bluefore armor which with the new ZTZ nerf feels pretty balanced right now.

      I'm almost certain they will make crew members killable in such vehicles. They've already done this for the engine and ammo rack so it shouldn't be too much work.
      It's a great thing to add as well.
      Although one problem I see is how the dead crewmember will be handled, where will they go and how can they be revived?

      While I don't know if what Baron suggested is the best course of action, but you also need to keep in mind not every faction will have thermals, so it's not just infantry vs armor balance, but also armor vs armor balance too.

    Are there plans to make vehicles armour more realistic? It’s really great in squad 44 but i guess it’s hard to integrate with so many different vehicles

    Out of everything I want them to touch, even more than optimizing the game, is the commander role. I’ve played commander for more hours than I want to admit and I always felt that it needs an overhaul. The current abilities are nice but some other small abilities would make the role more diverse. Airdrops of ammo and build could be neat. Smaller UAV drones, since information is key in this game for your lead roles. I do like the ability to request certain vehicles that is pretty neat. So much potential for the commander to get a rework. A commander specific vehicle would be to call in support.

    Give thermals to vehicles accurately, remove the HP system for vehicles, enable penetration on vehicles to kill crew just like in warthunder, and I think that would make it balanced. Give AA trucks and AA technicals better optics, just like what some Insurgents are using in Syria, which will at least enable them to engage from long range, INCREASED OPTIMIZATION FOR BETTER GAME PERFORMANCE, and lastly destructible buildings just like in Battlefield 1.

      Pretty sure destructive terrain isn't feasible within the engine, also having used thermals in the Army irl, I can tell you they're a game changer, I don't know if killable crew members will balance that.

    Really like you content! Inserting clips from the actual Q&A is a great choice.
    Some recommendations:
    1. Try uploading in 4K/60FPS if possible
    2. Try inserting snippets of what your referring to. For instance; the BFIST Bradley. You mentioned the optics system next to the turret, it would have been really nice to see a cut panning around the optic box on the vehicle on Jansen’s Range or something like that. Or (even easier) just insert a screenshot of the system and insert it into the segment with the gameplay going in the background.
    I’m not a video editor or anything so my suggestions may be shit, just things I think would bring you videos up another level!

      I play there some! My group and I typically bounce around. We enjoy vehicle claim there though! That's a huge bonus.

    The CAS helis, anti air and command assets are promising. Tho I hope OWI continues to listen to what the game needs and works towards that

    Javelin could be balanced, it doesn't have to kill every single tank or IFV in one shot in game, cuz it doesn't do so irl too, there are videos of vehicles surviving Javelin.
    We already have balance where TOW, Kornet and HAT also don't kill tanks in one shot, but there were instances of it happening in real life.
    Javelin will be limited by the fact that it's missile needs ~5-10 seconds in order to be able to acquire target, as IR head needs to be "cool", combine this delay in every single shot with it's minimum range, limitations of terrain, certain smoke types being able to throw the missile off it's course, cost of rearm and it won't be overpowered. If OWI adds Eryx and Metis-M systems, for example, they'll be pretty comparable in performance on practice.

      I say it should be a static 2 person required system, basically the first guy with the targeting unit finds a spot, crouches, then the second guy has to load the missile, if they wanna move the missile has to be unloaded,

    Command specific strikes to their unit might make other units more viable. For instance if a US army unit had a HIMARS strike instead of artillery barrage that came in with no warning like IMF mortar.

    15:48 I would wish instead of a different stat board (because who really cares about K/D?). It would be great (IMO and don’t think I’d be alone?) if when the round ends, everyone/everything (habs etc) essentially get revealed as if you were spectating, so you can see stuff like radios maybe you missed or if the game would last a little longer, what was down the road etc

      Oh.. that could be an interesting view... or at least like a quick timelapse of the match progression or something -- but I also feel like that may be difficult to create and could be more a problem thing to add.
      The new stat board is less about KD and more about tickets.. where are they lost, gained, etc.. I think that alone would help to some degree.

      Ah yeah, I guess like how you see the vehicle list when opening the map, maybe a counter of how many were lost that round (should be easy to implement)

      TBF it wouldn't necessarily be hard or a performance​ hitter. In game match recording is there already. Rockstar games automatically records and takes in account all entities within a set area for their video replay. Squads replay system could be built upon and utilized quite easily to accommodate/accomplish what you are wanting to do. I personally just heard resources this resources that from this QnA. If resources was such an issue then why did they acquire Post Scriptum (Squad 44)? Don't get me wrong I love both, but if resources is such an issue to give your player base what they want and to build out as well as properly balance new features then why spread your team thin in the first place. Its like with the javelins and thermals, (balancing is a problem) no it's not if you give armour proper defense systems to counter like IRL. @@caolkyle

    8.0.1 added special forces as a unit type in the sdk on the factionSetup dataAsset dropdown. even has a bio.

    I dont know how difficult it would be to add a damagesystem like in war thunder but it would greatly increase the fun i would have in armor

      I don’t think adding war thunder systems are going to help armor gameplay that much. The main problem I can see is that war thunder you get 3-5 tanks in a short 10min match and in squad loading a tank cost you 20min and tickets.

      A bit, if you watch the "other questions" towards the end.. I summarzied a little of that. They are looking into the FPS issue with ADSing and also game engine ugprades.

    i hate when devs dont add content into the game because they cant balance it. just look at project reality it already was implemented there without any problems. smh

      Totally agree. Anything can be as strong or as weak as you desire, that’s the beauty of it being a video game.
      I want attack helicopters, pilotable jets, the FGM-148, and so much more in Squad.

      @@luger700 oh man, i remember the good old days when i was playing project reality. i loved to being pilot in that game so much because there was so many playable aircraft and it required such a precise coordination with other squad leaders. i hope devs will look at PR and add features that was already there

      I def want them to bring any and all to the game.. but I can understand a hesitation around something being OP.. They brought the new mortar m13's in and that was OP.. people complained.

    Jesus Christ, we have blasted OWI on Reddit Squad subreddit featuring bugs that have been out there for years and not yet fixed such as MAAVS instant reload or Uber armor on Abrams and Breadly once facing particular directions such as NW SW but not West North nor South… FPS drop when in optics and many more other things such as ghost guns firing in the middle of nowhere… glitched skins and the list goes on. Ffs, listen to the community as we buy this game. If we stop buying, you will be out of the market!

    They pick and choose what they want to make realistic and its soooooo annoying... Toes get real spin now but the bfist doesn't get more amo like scout Bradly's have. They give the new bmp's loads of amo but the bfist that got nurfed with no toes you dont even get more 25mill unlike all the bmps and china vics. America makes weapons not to be fair lol its war. Having an emplaced jav id loose my mind that's not how those weapon systems work this isnt cod this is a mill sim all this balancing is getting over hand. They always Pic and choose realism aka keep all American vics nurfed and then spit on all infantrymen who ever served and say yeah this is how you'd act like they know..... Never once kept my eyes closed for 30min after being shot at. Alot of their decisions have made so many OG squad players leave. If they tighten up how infantry work ill be happy. Oh does the PMC faction get better gun handling? Considering what it takes to be one? Its a game let us control our weapons like men and have fun. The ICO ok idea but still on the far spectrum, game forcing your character to react is never to way to make a game feel good and natural. Leave the fear to the player Hell let loose does this just fine or even tarkov. I dont need to go blind when people shoot at me. IDC if its a year old its been a year since the ICO all my friend and I haven't been able to fully enjoy the game, that we had thousands of hours on before the ICO.

      This game isn’t meant to mimic real life. If they added components like real life, then American factions would most likely be skipped/banned from rotations as no one will want to play them.
      Just like when MEA came out, no one liked them but they slowly tweaked it.
      It would be a good feature for vehicles to pick how much of what round they get, similar to the Supply/Ammo for logis, that alone would massively mix things up.
      Also need to bear in mind that game studios, the size of OWI need to small, iterative changes and not less massive changes. (Can look up Agile Scrum delivery vs something like Waterfall). As a QA, I very much see the frustration that the sensors modules being added with no real use for, is just purely a fact of software development. That you can’t do all the changes in one go, unless you accept the risk that follows doing that.

      CREAMI!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with a chunk of this. I personally think the LAV-25 needs some love especially going against PLA's ZBLs or some of the RGF vehicles. However, if one faction has superiority across the board it makes the whole thing pretty imbalanced. While that's how it should be, if it were based off realism, it doesn't offer much variety in the gaming experience. It becomes dull if you know you'll just win as that one faction or lose if you oppose it.
      As for ICO, the point of it being a year was more about the fact that folks are asking for it to just be removed. That's not going to happen. What they are focused on and what they want attention to is tweaks and updates they can make to things like weapon handling. They've been doing those tweaks in the updates since the ICO release, most recently updates to PLA weapons.
      I was hesitant about ICO, but the writing was on the wall that it was going to be a thing I was either going to have to adapt to if I were to keep playing. It took some hours to get there, but now I feel like I have a much better understanding of how it works, enough so that I get gratification from the firefights and whatnot. It may not be for everyone.. but what myself and a large group of friends I game with have found is that it requires time, patience, etc.. to learn and adapt to. Positioning becomes key, vehicle movement/combined arms becomes much more important. Before ICO.. they were important too, but underutilized in the way that they are now. If you treat the game the same way with the new mechanics in place.. you won't have as much fun nor be as successful. You used to be able to take a light vehicle out of main and it didn't matter as much if you had it after the initial rollout.. but now you need it giving character movement and stamina. There's also a bigger reliance on working with a group.. a fireteam or whole squad to work together to do a push on an objective. I've had a bunch of fun over the last several months, especially playing in a group and working together to attack things , again with a different effort put towards strategy and how we go about it.

    The whole balancing thing won't make the game any realistic neither fun to play.

    ICO sucks needs a lot of tweaking 20 seconds to stabilize a shot on a RPG is too much
