    When I printed out my template, I measured with a rule and had to enlarge the drawing to 106% to get everything to print out correctly to the right size .

      106%. Good info. Thanks for passing it along. May help out the next guy. 👍

      By default most printers scale the print to fit within it's margins. Just uncheck the box in your printer settings for "Fit to page". Then it won't do any scaling to their printed template.

      @bobd. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Windows print dialog most times defaults to the 'size to fit' setting enabled. This shrinks the image trying to fit it all on one page. If you uncheck that box before printing it should print full size.

    I have heated flex hose and 4" PVC pipes with a propane torch it works lovely you can also use a good heat gun to soften it up so it can slide over fittings.

    Bought a 2hp Grizzly dust collector on Craigslist. there was no manual so I watched every TH-cam video I could find, and there are some really good ones.
    I showhorned the Dust Collector, a Dust Deputy XL, a 40 gallon Rubbermaid garbage can and a Wynn Cartridge Air Filter into a closet, fired up the system and swept the sawdust into the hose, the dust disappearing into the tube.
    instead of collecting in the Rubbbermaid, 99% of the sawdust ended up in the pail connected to the bottom of the filter cartridge, downstream from the can. Called Oneida, turns out the primary reason for this is a leak between the DD and the barrel/dust receptacle.
    Negative pressure (vacuum) created by the Dust Collector was causing the backside of the 40 gallon Rubbermaid garbage to cave partially in, drawing the top lip away from the mating surface allowing air to be sucked into the bottom of the DD. The incoming air carried all the swirling sawdust out the top of the DD and into the secondary filter and bag.
    It should be noted that ANY leak between the DD and the receptacle can cause this problem, so if you have this check the receptable, the hoses, the clamps - basically everything under the DD that could leak air.
    Needing to replace the Rubbermaid I found a thick wall 20 gallon round plastic "sump basket" that fit perfectly in place of the plastic garbage can and solved the problem. So if this problem sounds familiar check for leaks between the bottom of the DD and the sawdust receptacle, because odds are that's the problem. So if you're having a problem with Blow-by odds are it's an air leak somewhere between the bottom of the DD and the receptacle. Fix this and you'll probably fix your problem....

    Decent review, but that flex hose from the dust collector to the cyclone with a hard bend on top of the cyclone is killing a lot of cfm, especially if you are running longer flex to get to other tools after the cyclone. Would highly recommend turning the dust collector 90 degrees to get the outlet pointed towards the cyclone, then if the outlet is 5" run 5" pvc up and turn towards the cyclone, then use flex over to it so you can disconnect easily for emptying.

    The bend of the flex tube needs to be fixed, it reduces air flow to the top of the super cyclone collector.

      i know your reply is a year old but i have a question for you Jason... What Dust collector are you running with that XL? I'm asking because I accidentally bought an XL and am trying to decide whether to keep it or not. I have actually ordered an a regular Super Dust Deputy, mainly because of the height, the XL is very tall, and of course has the large ports that i don't need. Anything you could tell me about what collector you're using, and how you connected it and how it's working out for you i'd love to hear. Thanks!

    The Super DD is a great thing to have in the shop, and will save a tone of time emptying out those damn plastic bags all the time. I know you are going to get a HEPA cartridge too, and that will be a major upgrade not only to your air flow, but also the cleanliness of your exhaust. And nice shirt BTW!!!

    Its march of '19 now so I am sure you have the bugs worked out by now, but for seeing when the barrel is full: put a plexiglass window (4 inch square or so) on the lid then you can see in with a flashlight. Just seal it with caulking and screw it down.

    I see what others have said about the restriction of that radical turn in your flex hose. So make a 9"or so radius from some thin wood to strap down that black flex hose to get away from the acute turns. Should really speed up the air.

    Eric, I like the TH-cam live approach. Interruptions happen to me too. Perhaps I should hang a sign on my door, I was thinking 'DANGER - Confined Space - Permit Required for Entry' I too have found dust collection fittings a crap shoot particularly the plastic fittings. Steve

    Thanks, just bought a used Jet Dust Extraction system along with a used Oneida cyclone (with drum). Was wondering how to set it all this up, your video helps a lot. Seems like a common frustration with these systems is the various couplers needed to connect everything together. My shop tools have various size hookups as well. Very surprised there is no "standard" in place for shop vacuum systems to make this a little less maddening. Anyway, thanks again!

      It would take at least 3 different sizes even then. 35mm; 21/2 " and 4 inch .I seldom use 4 inch and then only 21/2 for fix hose position. Most with small hose and 35mm because of the hose and vacuum advantage with most tools.

    Ran into the same problems as you. Seeing no one has mentioned it yet but 55 gallons of sawdust weighs a ton. Although you might be able to lift it the garbage guys might not be as strong. I came home from work one day and had small mountain of sawdust sitting at the end of my drive way. Ended up using a 20 gallon soap can from the car wash. Paid 5 dollars for it.

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luckily for our guys who pick up the trash they drive trucks with remote controlled arms that pick up the trash bins. So as long as the bag of dust fits into the bin the truck will do all the lifting. And if the bag is too big for the bin, I can load the bag into the back of my truck and toss it in our large dumper at work. 😎 But yeah, when the time comes to empty the 55 gallon barrel it's gonna have some weight for sure.

      @Regnarrussell 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you are lucky. Also if you ever mount the cyclone to the wall you can use flanges on the bottom and some 6" Clear hose to see when it is full. I used these flanges from Amazon.www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004K69J6G/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      Needed to drill new holes but that wasnt hard at all.

  • @Prevailingbucket
    @Prevailingbucket 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can eliminate the barrel clamp altogether if you fabricate a metal knife edge on top of your barrel and then apply an automotive type of door gasket too it. When you turn on the collector the suction will pull it down tight. With the collector off, the dust deputy will lift right off.

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A metal knife edge ? Not sure I follow. Sorry. The lid does have a seal. So I'm good with that. 👍

    • @Prevailingbucket
      @Prevailingbucket 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think of it this way, if you draw a line all the way around your barrel one inch down from the top and use your jig saw to cut on that line what you would have is a knife edge. Throw away your lid that you cut off and cut a new lid out of plywood. Mount your dust deputy on the new lid and apply your automotive door seal to the knife edge on the barrel. With the suction on the lid sucks down forming a seal, with the suction off the lid lifts right off making emptying the barrel and checking its level a snap.
      Appreciate all your videos. Keep them coming.

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay.....I think I smell what your cooking. 🤔 And now you've got me thinking......I may not even need the barrel clamp that I'm using now. I may be able to pitch it and use the weight of the dust deputy and once the DC is turned on, the suction may be good enough to create a seal......maybe ? I'll give it a try tomorrow. My shop time has been interpreted with a birthday diner for my wife....which....I guess I should go take a shower and get ready for. LOL ! Thanks buddy ! !

      I mounted mine on a metal frame above the can, and run a 1 foot section of hose down to a fitting on an mdf lid I made for my can. I put a foam gasket on top of the can, and the mdf lid just its on top. I use a large rubber trash can, and when I start the dust collector it actually sucks the can sides in a bit. Seals very well.

    I ran into the same problems with the Deluxe Dust Deputy that I wanted to use with my Crapsman shop vac. The hoses that Oneida includes in the box did not fit the cyclone. Could not believe it. Took over a week with several phone calls and emails to finally get it resolved. Oneida made me email pictures to them before they would help.

    Hey bud, use a 6" flex hose or whatever your inlet size is on your DC to the top of the cyclone instead of the 4" flex hose, this will increase your CFM's. It looks like a 6" size, you should see a big difference.

    • @thepoplarshop
      @thepoplarshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I plan on doing more upgrades to this setup. Larger dia. hose will come in the future. The 4" is what I had in the shop. I'm still moving tools around trying to figure out my layout. Once I get my layout down I'm going to add some piping. 👍😉

      At first I won't have much time, however I'll make a huge effort to post on IG, and I'll start using the IG Stories - such an easier way to share whats going on in the shop. I'm sure I'll share the shop once it's up and running! My new gig doesn't allow me to free time to create videos like i've done in the past, I'd love to put out more content, it just requires too much time that I don't have, esp with a 16th month old now.

    2 comments. In addition to lances comment about using a larger hose between the dd and blower, you will increase performance by removing all the bends. Check out ty moser at monoloco workshop's setup. Also, don't buy the Oneida dust bin sentry - it is dead simple to make one yourself. I had a similar setup but disassembled the DC and rebuilt it to make it much more efficient. Phase 1 - lumberjocks.com/MikeMcK/blog/66122 Phase 2 - lumberjocks.com/MikeMcK/blog/68634 I found the changing the 4" connection between the DD input & output to 5" and getting the bends reduced makes a huge difference in efficiency.

      Mike McKenna Dude, nice setup. 👍 Since I recorded this video I've dismantled my DC and oriented the motor vertically over my dust deputy. Added a Wynn filter.
