- Painting the exterior of our aluminum travel trailer. The entire project took a little more than a week, not including the time we spent removing the old decals. This is definitely an amateur paint job BUT has held up fine so far!
Paint used: Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex

Thanks for your support!
First off, I got a lot if respect for you. I take it you have a partner/spouce but you were the one that did most of the work. If you were my neighbor, I would ask to hire you to help me as I m about to do mine.
As a professional painter who as not done and RV bu5 have done exterior of homes: stucco, aluminum siding, and wood, here's always what needs to ne done first. Sand with 220. Lightly, enough to rid any gloss. Brush off sanded paint before cleaning with water.
Wash with a ph balanced degresser/detergent. Some soaps leave a residue and some are to acidic or alkaline based which can interfere with paint.
Try not to let soap dry so tackle in manageable areas, not a whole side.
Make sure all sanded paint and dirt is removed. Make sure there is no left over residue.
Use a exterior bonding primer and have the folks at the supple store tint it to about the color you are using for paint.
Follow the directions on the can.
Two coat of paint. Go up and down 1st. Your bending technique is very good.
2nd coat go horizontal.
Note that your sprayer probably directs that the nozzle should be set one way for vertical and another for horizontal.
Finally. I can't tell you what paint iss best for this job because I don't paint RVs professionally.
What I can tell you is just about everyone on TH-cam is using products for house painting.
I would suggest going to a RV shop or look online for a product made for RVs. I am personally thinking about going to a marine shop near me and buying a oil based paint that is formulated for boats that is formulated for aluminum.
Last. If you're paint job seems to be holding up, I would get an exterior clear coat and check with the manufacturer (the number will be on the can for technical information and cal or email them. Even though I am a professional, I still send out emails asking specific questions and they do get back sometimes in 1 to 3 buisness days.
I highly respect yoir efforts! Anyone criticizes you tell them to post a video.
Well, 4 yrs ago I painted my travel trailer and done it pretty much like she did, I washed my travel trailer, then a while later painted, a few hrs later the 2nd coat. I did light grey and dark grey stripe. 3 yrs later it looks like new
Your painting transformed your trailer into such a sporty little rig! Nice job!
Thank you! I think it gives it a retro vibe
I would guess it would be easier have and better results if you went side to side with your spraying because of the siding on the trailer. Just my thoughts.
This is so helpful, thank you. I was going to try to squeeze in painting on Saturday before rain on Monday. Now I'm thinking I should wait until Tuesday.
I'd recommend waiting for as many dry days as you can get in a row! I know climate has a lot to do with dry time so it's so hard to know for sure how long you need until you're doing it
Good job!
Absolutely love it, great job
I used Rustoleum Door Paint. I think its been changed to Cabinet/Trim/Door paint. Dries fast and worked perfect. 4 years later and it still looks great and very scrubbable. Far surpassed any other paint I have tried. Just my 2 cents. Nice job!
Thank you. Loved this share
Thank you for watching!
Well you did a great job but your way of spray painting was really funny 😆 Squat City!! I’m thinking 🤔 I’ve never seen that method 👍🏻😁
Great job!
Thanks, hubby wants to paint the trailers we renovated over the last year. It's fiberglass with a lot of faded decal work to remove. Looks like there is hope though.
Sounds a lot like our project! Ours is aluminum though. I did quite a bit of research to find a paint that sounded like it would hold, but wouldn’t cost $1,000+. We wanted to go with automotive paint but it was just too expensive
looks awesome, currently reno a ole camper. great ideas. Ty
Thanks for watching!
Nice job!!
How has the paint stood up since you've been travelling so much? Looks Phenomenal!!
I'd give it a solid B+ on durability so far! I've thought about doing a "how are things holding up" video which would touch on the paint job and other materials we put into the camper.
It looks amazing!
Thank you!
Good job for a first-time painting. Kudos. For a gloss or semi-gloss, Wet sand 400 grit side to side. Wash, rinse, wash, rinse; the sprayer you use was not designed to spray undiluted paint. You can see the spray and pulsing in the video. Dilute to make a clean, smooth spray. Any units come with a funnel to time the flow. For sure, spray side to side, and make sure to add a slight up tilt to get under the metal roll. Another suggestion for people is to take the windows out. Paint under the windows and reseal with the proper RV frame putty, not plumber putty. What paint to use is a difficult question. For many brands, boat paint is great but costly at 100.00 a gallon. Im going to repaint mine very soon. It is huge; I really should reskin it. It's likely faster, too. Im tempted to go with rustolium oil base. That stuff sticks to everything. like you, i am going to do a flat color to hide the many dents from the hail storms we have. Light desert tan to match my truck. The squats were a great idea for keeping people watching. 10!
This is great! I know we are going to have to do this as well. Currently renovating an 86 Toyota odyssey on our channel. Thanks for sharing your journey, definitely saving us time and effort with research. Cheers!
Awesome!! I’ll check it out. It’s such a process, thank goodness for TH-cam videos for helping guide us haha
Yes seriously! TH-cam university haha
I think you have a good eye for design. I hope you do very well with your channel.
thank you! That's so kind. I truly loved the entire remodel process!
You should always use prime paint
U-haul approves this paint scheme.
If you use awesome cleaner from general dollar stores it will clean even the black streaks off
No judgment, but painting is usually done left to right, and overlapping, great exercise…. But, whatever works….
terracotta warrior
Turnt up terracotta
Did you take your aurning off or put a new one on.
Looks great .
Thank you! We did end up swapping out our awning.
No primer? I have an old aluminum rv with a lot of bare aluminum showing. Wondering if primer is necessary? Thx
Great job! Did you use any thinner in the paint?
I didn’t, only because all instructions said “do not thin”
The accent paint may have been made for aluminum but could have had a hard time sticking the the white paint. But either way turned out great.!
How much did that paint sprayer cost? And could you give info on what the paint dilution ratio is? Or did you use straight paint?
Straight paint! The instructions for this sprayer & paint type said specifically do not dilute. This is the Grace TrueCoat 360 and it’s less than $200!
Turned out good but go side to side to paint 😂😂😂
How do you paint around the awning?
We actually removed the awning before painting
What sheen did you use for the paint, satin or gloss?
Satin for both the white and the accent color
What name brand and particular paint do we use for rv
We used Sherwin Williams exterior super paint because it adheres to aluminum! A lot of people use auto paint for RVs as well
What 🎨 you used
Sherwin Williams exterior superpaint! Made for aluminum siding
Interesting. I don’t think it’s an old lady project.
nozzle should have been Vertical not Horizontal !
Good to know!
Why? It looked better before...
