Danny, I'm currently about to finish up the cabinets for the XLS and looking forward to getting the drives and putting the speakers together. i have no doubt it will be highly revealing and neutral. Ive been watching many of your videos about speaker "upgrades" and a question keeps coming to my mind. This is a request/suggestion for a future video. There are many reviewers on TH-cam who review many of the very speakers that you "upgrade" and they often speak of the fact that a particular speaker will sound Amazing even though it may not "measure well". Klipsch'es seem to fall in that category , from the smallest to the largest models. This then becomes the "sound" or the "signature" of the speakers. I can see changing out the components for better components may increase clarity without changing the character, but even that may change the character of the speaker, from one that may play bad recordings in a listenable way, to one that may make it difficult to listen to because of the increased clarity. Second, if you do end up changing the cross-over, even if you get a "flatter" response, don't you also change the "character" of a speaker even more so than just upgrading the parts? As example, do you end up taking an Andrew Jones speaker and make it sound like a Danny speaker? Some may prefer the Danny sound but is that the case all the time with these upgrades?. Just questions that are coming up. Would love to hear your take on this topic.
Let's identify what makes the character of a speaker. Take the Klipsch models for instance. Is it the out of phase drivers (out of time arrival) that makes their character? Is it the ringing or driver break up? Is it the elevated tweeter levels? Is it the cabinet wall resonances? There is a difference in a tonal shift and fixing problems. Response problems are still response problems. They aren't things that give a speaker a desirable sound. No speaker designer says I think I'll make the tweeter a little out of phase from the woofer to give it a unique sound. With regards to the Elac, the response was hardly changed in any way at all. It will sound much like it did but without the smearing of budget level parts. And no one chooses budget level parts because they sound good or give a character that they are looking for. They are chosen for low cost.
@@rc6717 R C based on your response, I can't imagine how you interpreted my comment but its an unfortunate, non-productive and generally juvenile response. My intention for my question/comment was purely for deeper understanding of Danny's process.

Doesn't the original smearing however smear a poor recording so that its listenable? Or is that more a function of the driver? I'm referring to speakers that are often referred to as being "forgiving". What about when the full cross-over redesign is necessary for example to deal with a forward sounding speaker.. when the redesign makes it a more "even/neutral/In-phase" configuration, does it change the sound signature of that speaker? I was curious what customers are saying about their new speakers. A new question that has emerged: Since the graphs don't show "sound-stage" depth/width, or imagining level or imaging clarity, holographic-ness, how do these subjective elements change with cross-over redesigns? P.S. All these comments are generic and not directed to any particular speaker upgrade.

Seems that the design of center speakers is too detrimental if they all suffer the same horizontal issue. Seems the only way to fix it is to stand it on end if you have a wide room.

I'm kind of surprised by DynAudio. I have heard their Focus 60 XD and it's obvious that they know their stuff so why this? Drivers not on axe, woofer that's not smooth with the surface and that port? Why?
Hi Danny, We live in Europe and we can’t buy a speaker from you due to transport costs. Can you give me a nod in the right direction for the purchase of a new bookshelf speaker we plan to purchase ?
I feel dynaudio has succumbed to the failure of chasing specs. The wanted to claim that it can hit 20hz. Without any concerns over the whole range of frequencies. They know that most buyers nowadays buy online without hearing them in person. They are relying on the purchasers looking for a good brand that meets the specs they think they need. That's a shame.
Hi Dan, you mentioned drivers phase. When your building a crossover, do you try to get the phase between drivers very close? I find that there is a trade off between being in phase at the crossover point or getting a flat response. Some driver combos are tougher than others. Some good combos(tweeter/midbass) output a flat response and are in phase. Love the channel!
I have a ATC SCM19 v2 and would like to replace the parts that are meh quality in the network. Question is, how do i measure their values? Resistors should be easy, caps should have it printed on, but what about coils? Can you maybe make a video and show different coils, caps and resistors in terms of quality and talk about their pros and cons?
Do you have cross over kits for klipsch rf5’s? I couldn’t find? I think you may have to make them a 2.5 way, id like to try to do it myself and measure but i haven’t learned enough yet. Do i just pay shipping there and back for you and a fee for you to check them out?

why dont center channel speakers have 1 woofer? can you say the answer in the next video, so i dont miss the comment answer. thanks. have alot more questions
Indopleaser - because they aren't actually a woofer, but midrange drivers tasked with focusing on and elevating mid-range vocal frequencies. Midrange drivers are directional, bass drivers aren't. Remove either left or right midrange driver from the centre channel speaker and you'll end up with the unidirectional sound which appears to come either from the left or right side and not from the centre.
I just picked up a set of DCM TP 160S stand mount speakers. Any fixes for these? They sound quite good to me, but I know there's always room for improvement.
With any of your new crossover kits, generally speaking, Does the power handling capabilities of the speaker change? In other words if the speakers input was 200 W max does that still remain?
I wouldn’t bet on it. Every speaker is different. Case in point: those SVS towers he didn’t make any design changes to are the floor standing version of a bookshelf speaker he looked at a few weeks ago. The bookshelf version needed significant changes while the floor standers just got upgraded crossover components of the same value.
Some center channels are actually 3-way designs. Martin Logan's Motion series for example. The 30i has crossover points of 400 hz and 2600 hz. The 50XTi has crossover points of 900 hz and 2200 hz.

Why don't you measure distortion? Don't you think this would be important information if you're going to change the OEM crossover points and levels of individual drivers?
Danny believes that speakers should sound flat and neutral so he fixes speakers that color the sound, although I prefer to use some EQ to adjust the sound to my liking versus changing the sound with the crossover or hunting for a speaker for a given response.

He has never found a perfect speaker get use to it. So everybody send your lousy sounding speaks to danny, Andrew Jones look out he'e after your job.
I watch with my sisters kid , he loves Alaska Big Foot monsters , but he doesn't know English very good so i translate him , and when i do i sweeten it up , hes so in to it when we were on mountain last weak , he was Crusty and i was helping him to make a Trap for Big Foot . Shame local Wolfs came in and chased us out . But next time :)
I'm kind of surprised by DynAudio. I have heard their Focus 60 XD and it's obvious that they know their stuff so why this? Drivers not on axe, woofer that's not smooth with the surface and that port? Why?
drivers being off-axis like that is sometimes done to deal with baffle edge diffraction.
Aw, I thought the mullet was coming on great! 😄
could we see a comparison of the active vs passive of the bm15a
I must have missed it but where are the measurements of the Dynaudio active vs your passive version?
He's doing a separate video on them. The A-B test will be interesting to see.
Yes. Iam also very curious about that
Hi Danny, We live in Europe and we can’t buy a speaker from you due to transport costs.
There's no copyright or intellectual property claim for a crossover
The coils are fine in those. Just upgrade the caps and resistors. And all of those have the stated values right on them.
Hey gr research which speakers should I buy with no upgrade bookshelf n floorstanders please let me know what u recommend for Yamaha RX v6a
Do you have cross over kits for klipsch rf5’s? I couldn’t find? I think you may have to make them a 2.5 way, id like to try to do it myself and measure but i haven’t learned enough yet. Do i just pay shipping there and back for you and a fee for you to check them out?
I LIKE TO INJECT AN IDEA AND CHALLENGE FOR GR REASEARCH, HOW ABOUT A SERIES ABOUT HOME STUDIO MONITORS AND HOW TO UPGRADE THEM TO BE PURE AND FLAT AS POSSIBLE TO GIVE A TRUE IMAGE OF A RECORDING. THEN THE LINK ON HOW TO PURCHASE THE UPGRADE KIT EXCLUSIVELY SOLD BY GR RESEARCH WITH INSTRUCTIONS. I HAVE A PAIR OF YAMAHA HS80 , AND WOULD LOVE TO GET THE BEST FLAT PERFORMANCE OUT OF THEM IN THE MISSION OF GETTING THE MOST ACCURATE MIX DOWNS.
I HAVE FRIENDS WHOM ARE ALSO PRODUCERS AND I BELIEVE THAT GR RESEARCH CAN HELP US ALL IN OUR QUEST OF HAVING A SOLID LISTENING ENVIRONMENT...
Why didn't you show the measurements of the SVS
why dont center channel speakers have 1 woofer? can you say the answer in the next video, so i dont miss the comment answer. thanks. have alot more questions
Thanks for the vid.
I just picked up a set of DCM TP 160S stand mount speakers. Any fixes for these? They sound quite good to me, but I know there's always room for improvement.
What are your thoughts on 5he JBL 530? They seem to have the most mixed reviews
Any one seen big foot or heard of the rebops (Flying Monkeys in napa ca)..
With any of your new crossover kits, generally speaking, Does the power handling capabilities of the speaker change? In other words if the speakers input was 200 W max does that still remain?
That is not changed.
14:00 Port noise complaint :p
what would be the cost of the dynaudio passive crossover?
What about making the svs crossover external in its own box?
What happened to your voice at 10:15 ? 😂😂
Puberty flashback.
I have klipsch rf3 II can you make new crossovers for them?
What is one of your favorite bookshelf speakers that I can buy today and expect decent performance? Thank you
ATC. He did a job on one of them recently. th-cam.com/video/2HynGfGmajg/w-d-xo.html
Would it be a similar kind of upgrade for the ELAC BS73 speakers? i can't send them in as I'm not in the USA
Why do they do centre channels with two woofers if it's that bad. What happens if you turn one off :)
Some center channels are actually 3-way designs. Martin Logan's Motion series for example. The 30i has crossover points of 400 hz and 2600 hz. The 50XTi has crossover points of 900 hz and 2200 hz.
Have you ever done sir in Vegas Dx9’s.The reason I’m asking is I’m about to restore A pair and took a glance at the crossovers and seen everything that you say is not good. I’m going to be pairing them with a Sansui 9000 DB. I want the best sound and the highest quality crossover I could get for it.So I was just wondering if you have Ever did a pair
which model Elac ?
Greetings.
Is that the 'legendary' esotar tweeter?
It is not.
Dynaudio calls it the "Esotec".
embrace the mullet
Have you done any up grades on wharfdale Evo 4.2
No.
Hey Danny which elac center was that
Search for the previous video, I believe the info was mentioned there.
@@MrTheDarku thanks
What model is the dynaudio?
Its a BM15a
Thank You Danny , I posted a pic of yiur NoRez on me cummunity page . I didn't realise how heavy and dense the material is very impressive to say the least 😃
Dynaudio should be pretty embarrassed upon seeing this video. A simple fix was all that was needed to correct that diffraction.
☠️
I wish someone local can take a JBL LX44 or LX500 there. Way to heavy to ship.
I might be able to. How heavy how much?
Why don't you measure distortion? Don't you think this would be important information if you're going to change the OEM crossover points and levels of individual drivers?
Wow 😁
How you fixed something that was designed to sound the way they sound 🤔...
Well that's an interesting comment!🤔😉😇🤫
Danny believes that speakers should sound flat and neutral so he fixes speakers that color the sound, although I prefer to use some EQ to adjust the sound to my liking versus changing the sound with the crossover or hunting for a speaker for a given response.
@@StewartMarkley so you're saying he can take any speaker from any brand and make them all sound the same ....an call it a up grade. Sounds generic to me ! I am also a car guy this would be the equivalent of putting a huge cam in a stock engine and leaving everything else stock. Yes it sounds great at Idle but doesn't perform 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️👴🏼😕
@@mp36768 just because a speaker sounds tonally neutral doesn't mean it is going to sound and perform like every other neutral sounding speaker. There are many other variables that make speakers sound different, even in the same room and positions.
they were designed to perform at a price level.
You don’t seem to be as cheesy here on these videos as you do on the new up to date ones,..what happened? I’m being serious….almost like a different person 🙏
Man I didn't have my hair that long in the 70s
Finding Jimmy Hoffa
which center channel design will genrally have a better offaxis. MMTMM ( 3.5 woofers) or MTM ( 5.25" woofers) of the same brand( klipsch)?
If anyone is foolish enough to install this guys hookie crossover components forget about the resale value of your speakers. aka Dynaudio special 40 3 grand
Dynaudio…. Smh 🤦♂️
Hmmm... portnoise complaint...
Hair trim
Get your money back on the haircut!
Bobo!!! Haha. Renee! Lol.
Name brand fan boy take the cross over at and replace with big name brand components possibly with the same spec/ values
