  • Sega Dreamcast: What Happened?
    ASUS ROG STRIX WiFi 6 Gaming Router: bit.ly/2Zyf0NV
    The year was 1999. After falling behind Sony and Nintendo in the gaming console wars, SEGA was back with something brand new - a console that packed several new features and advanced graphics to match. It was the SEGA Dreamcast, and it was released in the US on September 9th, 1999 after months of hype that told people that on 9/9/99, SEGA would be back and better than ever. Then, just over a year later, the SEGA Dreamcast was cancelled. In this episode of Tech Fails, we travel back to 2001 and examine exactly why such an extraordinary console became a total disaster.
    The ‪@SEGA‬ Dreamcast failure left an indelible mark on the gaming world. It was the first ever sixth generation video game console and is widely credited with helping to revitalize the industry after what many considered to be a dry spell in the mid-1990s. Its release date coincided with a full solar eclipse across Asia and North America, and it retailed for $199 at launch (equivalent to $292 today). This made the system competitively priced against other sixth generation consoles such as the $299 PlayStation 2 or Microsoft Xbox. However, it’s also considered to be one of the most disappointing flops in video game history. Despite its short lifetime, the Dreamcast did manage to make a few major contributions to the gaming industry: things like online play, a version of dual screen gaming, and even emulators were all a part of the Dreamcast experience - but it wasn’t enough. Let’s talk about why the SEGA Dreamcast failed.

    I was a day one Dreamcast owner. Still one of my favorite consoles of all time. The 2k sports games were incredible and I remember them being insanely cheap at the time as they were trying to undercut EA. I want to say they were 19.99 brand new. Some of my best local-multiplayer gaming memories came playing 2k sports games on my Dreamcast.

    • @Andru
      @Andru  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wait a minute $20 for a new game?!?! I don't even remember this!!

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Andru The $20 price was later on with Xbox/PS2/Gamecube releases. The NFL2K series was a serious competitor to EAs Madden series. One year they decided to sell it for $20 to stick to it to EA. The next year EA bought the rights to produce official NFL console games and the NFL Players right for 10 years. No other publisher could make an NFL game that included the team names, and team roster of players.
      2KGames bought the same NBA rights in retaliation, but the damage was done, EA and Madden had won the console football war, by forcing the competition to quit.

    • @graalcloud
      @graalcloud 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lazarushernandez5827 What blows my mind is that there were people braindead enough to buy those football games in the first place, I mean maybe it's just me but I never found realistic sports video games to be ANY fun at all. The first game I remember playing in the late 80's early 90's was Duck Hunt, that's a much better example of how to make a sports-based game, by making it unrealistic. This is why NBA JAM is the best basketball game ever made, possibly the best sports game ever made, and there's no competition--because it was not based on real basketball but instead they made a fun unrealistic video game based on baskteball. As far as football games go there was NFL BLITZ--a far superior video game to madden.

      I remember when the 2K series for Dreamcast was untouchable!!! Football was crazy!!! Miss those days. Every now and then I connect my Dreamcast for those classics... Graphically inferior compared to today's, but I feel it's more fun than today's.

      That's way cool. I refurbished/modded a used DC last year. That was fun in itself, and I also had mega nostalgia re-playing some of the games I had ~20 years ago. Such a cool gaming system.

    Piracy killed it. It also had a high failure rate. I remember my dog unplugging a controller while i was playing it and practically broke the console. I googled it and it was a resistor that needed to be upgraded.

    • @danbaker7045
      @danbaker7045 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DC didn't have a high failure rate. Ps2 certainly did though. Enough so that that had to settle out of court

    • @mgkaotic
      @mgkaotic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danbaker7045 sega didn't sell enough DC for it to be common knowledge. They were very fragile. Accidentally disconnecting your controller in the middle of game play was enough to brick the console. A quick Google in 2006 walked me through on how to fix it.

    I LOVED the Dreamcast. Seemed quite futuristic at the time. I remember being so impressed with the controller, VMUs, online capability, and the 128 bit graphics. My favorite games were Sonic Adventure, NBA 2K1, Dead or Alive 2, and Wild Metal.

    I know @andru played DC with “the boys” when it came out. I owned one eventually and I never regretted it - I had some of the most fun on that console, but it was sad to see SEGA die on what I think is one of their more innovative pieces of hardware.

    I feel like if the Dreamcast came out with 32 MB of RAM and maybe a price for the 329.99 they could have competed better the game's definitely needed it. Also with ram that's one thing that drops in price over time so they could have dropped their console price to compete with the PS2. And hopefully that would have delayed the PS2 somewhat for them to increase their Ram since it was only 32 MB as well which was also underpowered.

    The Dreamcast didn't fail. Sega made a lot bad decisions with their previous consoles and the mistakes that they made with the Dreamcast was not to include a DVD player and dial up internet connection. I still play my Dreamcast to this day. And in the early 2000 I bought a PS2 only for the DVD player and I bought like 30+ games and didn't care much for them. The problem was that in the past they made the Saturn too expensive and difficult to program games for that's why there is so many games with bad quality. When the Saturn came out was $400 or $500 I don't remember but the PlayStation was only $299 and had one processor and it was easier for game programmers to make games for it. When the Dreamcast came out was like $200 they were supposed to make it $300 with DVD player and internet connection not dial up connection.
