SURVIVING SALFORD - THE AFTERLIFE! -

  • IN THIS VIDEO WE EXPLORE THE DERELICT ESTATE OF WHAT ONCE WAS THE GHOST TOWN OF SALFORD. BACK IN 2019 I MADE A VIDEO CALLED "THE FORGOTTEN STREETS OF SALFORD" WHICH GOT A FAIR BIT OF PUBLICITY (CHECK VIDEOS) NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS DID I EVER THINK IT WOULD DO AS WELL AS IT DID. MANY PEOPLE SHARED THE VIDEO, COMMENTED AND IN A ROUND ABOUT WAY IT BROUGHT SOME OF THE OLD RESIDENTS BACK TOGETHER. AFTER THE DEMOLITION OF THE ESTATE I HAVE DECIDED TO GO BACK AND SEE WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE AREA. IT'S REALLY STRANGE WALKED AROUND WHERE ALL THE HOUSES ONCE STOOD, AS THE ATMOSPHERE AND ENERGY IS STILL VERY MUCH ALIVE.
IN THE SECOND SEGMENT OF THE VIDEO WE DELVE INTO THE OLD SCHOOL PUBS OF SALFORD! SADLY THE SALFORD IS BECOMING A BIT OF A GRAVEYARD FOR OLD PUBS AND SOME OF THESE PUBS HOLD HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE! AS WELL AS BEING THE HEARTBEAT OF MANY OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES.
NOW THIS WOULDN'T BE A SURVIVING SALFORD VIDEO WITHOUT A HIDDEN GEM BEING THROW INTO THE MIX! WE REVIVE THE HISTORY AND REDISCOVER THE REMNANTS OF THE OLD CLIFTON JUNCTION TRAIN STATION THAT HAS LAY ABANDONED AND HIDDEN IN THE WOOD SINCE 1966 ! AS WELL AS REVIVING THE STORY OF A LOCAL HERO, WHOS BRAVERY AND QUICK THINKING AS BEEN FORGOTTEN IN THE CHAPTERS OF THE PAST!

Something you said about the pubs brought a tear to my eye, the 80 yr olds socialising with the 20 yr olds, that's so powerful and spot on, pubs were a bridge between generation's , families, extended families, neighbours, people who worked locally all coming together under the same roof , where will the old fellas, often widowed go now...its absolutely heart breaking.
Another powerful moment was flashing back to the house which looked like they still lived in , like a 'nanas and grandads house" I remember those painted tire plant pots and hadn't even thought about them since the early 90s!
Salford grandparents always had mint gardens and clean front steps and cleaned the street in front of the house, all the neighbours did, salford was full of colour and amazing old people ❤
Well done Anthony for stoking those memories and remembering old salford the way it used to be. Top draw production as always! 😁💥💯

I remember in the 60s going to the saturday matinee at the Essoldo cinema next door to the Church Inn, which has finally gone now.
9d or 1 shilling to include a comic and an orange.
My dad travelled from Pendleton station to Clifton junction every day. He worked at the nearby Chloride until he retired.
Clifton Junction was renamed Clifton Station and is still open albeit with a limited service. This happened when the East Lancs railway branch line to Bury closed in 1966. Those platforms you explored served that branch line that went over the 13 arch viaduct near Radcliffe.
My dad was born in Ellor St in the 1930s and went to John St school.
    I am a descendant of James O'Connor.

The person who said they lived in Marple Street, struck a bell with me. My Grandparent Tom and Clara Ratcliffe live with my G-grandmother Mariah (Grandads mother ) she by the time of their marriage in 1917, had become a Widow, lived in Marple Street. My Dad Tom and his Sister Lillian would live with taking it in turns, months at a time. My Grandparents had relocated to Leeds due to my Grandads job. My Dad had fond memories of Salford, amazingly Mark my Son was a Student at Salford University, are some of high rise flats still Halls of Residence for the Students. He's still mates with Students he met at Salford University, one of them being his Best Man last year at his wedding. Great video 🍻

Wow, very powerful, nostalgic, surreal. Resonates with so many great towns, villages. Really does make you think back to how communities and places have vanished since WW2. This took me back to me playing on what we called the bombed buildings remnants left from the demolished areas during the war. Fortunately I was born a few years later. Everyone that watches this Vlog will be familiar in a time when the surrealism of the characterised areas you describe, are met with the reality of time and life . We have all lived through these times and contunue to see the communities and industries decline before our eyes and below the ground we walk on daily. You tell the story like visualisations of a dream or maybe a past life? Dm you certainly have a gift of sensitivity and empathy which will take you far. However, keep your feet on the ground that is where your strength is coming from. Very talented young man. XX.

During the great Salford slum clearance in the 50's and 60's you would go over cobbled streets without houses with the occasional pub standing in forlorn isolation. The pubs were the last to go. In some places there would be houses half demolished and you would see wallpaper and fireplaces and even basins attached to the wall suspended in space. This video reminds me of the feelings that I had at that time. The claim of slum clearance was a lie. Many of the houses were really good and well-maintained by their owners. There was a feeling that graft, corruption and arrogance was what drove the destruction of so many good houses. My original family home was compulsorily purchased at a low price for redevelopment but to-day, refurbished is still standing.

Shame they closed as were the priory and the Maypole in Pendleton.( Maypole was famous for having the highest bar in UK. Being an ex Prestwich lad iI used to spend my childhood down Drinkwater park so remember the 13 Arches very well. Its sad to see the way things are. I'm fearing an increasing concrete jungle. Streuth, that took me back. One of my earliest memories was getting lost on Cross Lane market and being looked after by the police until they found me mum. Then walking back to Pendleton Church to get the bus home there were men fighting outside a pub. Me mum saying it was a terrible rough area with houses like the one in the Museum. By her standards Ordsall where she was brought up was quite respectable. So in the Sixties the Victorean terraces of Ellor Street were demolished and the first community was destroyed and shipped off to Little Hulton. The big blocks of flats went up which were traditionally built and still stand the test of time. However in between were the four storey blocks shown in parts of the video. There were made of prefabricated panels and stated to fall apart almost as soon as they were put up. So about fifteen or so years on they were pulled down and another community hit the dust. The came your community of the Eighties and nineties. What is it about the powers that be that can make the same mistake three time in a row. As a final touch living in Pendlebury we sometime got the train to Bury at Clifton Junction. That picture of the long curved platform and the wooden shelter brought back a long lost memory from the depths of my mind

Absolutely brilliant work Anthony! As always, the depth and quality of your research, dialogue and presentation is in a league of it's own. I wonder why the estate featured at the beginning was demolished - as your dad mentioned, the houses themselves were quite solid. The site of the old railway station was haunting to see. Isn't it remarkable how mother nature finds a way to slowly and quietly reclaim the spaces which were borrowed from her, once they have been discarded. Thank you for sharing your talent and work with us Anthony, it is hugely appreciated!

    • @daftmonkey7296
      @daftmonkey7296  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow that’s such a great comment Padraic! I personally they was cleanse the area. Trying to push the people of these houses in order to start a fresh and demolish the estate to sell the land to investors. They are doing this to a few parts of Salford and Manchester at the minute. On top of that when the riots that happened a few years ago, many of the rioters came from the estate and I think that was the straw that broke the camels back. Just my opinion.
The station like you said is quite haunting.
There was other stories connected to the station that I left out, that I could have put in the video. Maybe they are for another video down the line.

Gripping documentary. I was born in Bolton but moved to Salford in my early 20's. My Salford mates call me a refugee, daft sods. Lived in Birley Court, the tower block near the precinct for years, until they tore it down, I had some of the best neighbours I've ever had. The Church Inn was a local pub, your commentary about pubs being part of a community brought a lump to my throat. Still live in Salford, albeit in a fancier place than Birley Court, wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It's addictive. Thanks for a cracking vid.

Been waiting a while for your next production and yet again, NOT disappointed. Absolutely brilliant!! The amount of time to research must have been overwhelming and then to put it all together in a video - truly, you are a genius. Thank you. I'm not from Salford (proud to say I'm tuther side of pennines) but this video had me quite emotional at times and curious. You and dad ought to go back to where the station once was because I'm so sure you'll get some paranormal sounds and voices from the past. Oh kiddo, you need to do this for a living 'cos you're brilliant. Can't wait for the next....... Sharon 💚
