AWD Toyota Camry SE, 37 thousand Canadian, so around the same as this Subaru when converted to US dollars. So Toyota is comparable price wise when buying the Camry with AWD. I thought about getting the WRX but settled on the Camry, but I would have been happy with either. What i really wanted though was the MX5 miata.....long story as to why i ended up with a Camry.

I've read some Subaru models had wheel bearing problems, shot after 50k miles. Others had head gasket problems. Some had cvt issues. You have to really research the years if you're going to buy one used. And if buying new research twice as hard. The Subaru brand is still strong despite all this. They've built on safety and their AWD. Not sure I'd buy one, I'm the 2012 Corolla kind of guy lol.

Same here in Maine. We do not buy snow tires, instead we buy All Season tires that have a beefier tread than a touring tire would. I look for tread pattern that has the anti-hydroplaning groove on it. My daughter has an AWD Toyota SUV, her steep driveway out in the woods calls for studded snow tires as she needs better grip on that icy driveway. She works across from a tire place so no big deal for her getting her tires switched in the Spring.

In fact, some cheaply made filters will have rust on the top inside when first bought. All Subaru manual transmission cars (except the BRZ/FRS which has a Toyota transmission) have a flaw in the clutch that your article overlooks. Where the release bearing moves to disengage the pressure plate there is a surface called the ‘quill’ that on any other design is a cast iron part of the input bearing/seal retainer. Aka Subaru manual transmission cases split longitudinal and that quill surface is a cast aluminum extension on the front of the case halves. Because the carrier for the release bearing is steel it naturally wears uneven stress patterns into the soft aluminum case in normal use. The result is uneven movement as the clutch is released, manifested as clutch chatter. The problem is so prevalent that an aftermarket company makes a speedy-sleeve to install over the damaged quill and a release bearing with corresponding larger inside diameter. To my knowledge no other manufacturer has a designed in failure in this area that has prompted aftermarket remedy. My stepson recently lemon lawed a ‘22 WRX rather than having the dealership do an in-the- field transmission case replacement because they refused to acknowledge the aftermarket remedy. This at 36K miles from new. So the manual transmission is not a bulletproof alternative to the CVT as seems to be the assumption. CVTs that get regular fluid replacement maintenance easily outlast 36K in my experience.

I think you'll find that motor oils do degrade over time. Maybe not the base oil but some constituents of the additive package that all of them contain tend to precipitate out over time and shaking the container does not get them all back into solution. I recently learned this thanks to the Oil Geek YT channel. The guy is a certified tribologist and seems to know his stuff.

I smile every time I stop at a gas station while filling up my 2012 Toyota Prius V. 42 MPG while carrying an 80 gallon water heater with all the doors closed! And it has never broken down yet at 128,000 miles. Just routine maintenance. For me it was cheap to buy used (at least it was in 2018), cheap to insure, cheap to drive, all while being extremely reliable. And it wins top speed races over F-150's as they are speed is governed to less than 100 MPH, while the Prius is not!

I own three AWD vehicles living on a mountain in CT with snow in the winter. FWD cars even with snow tires go off the road sometimes and struggle to make it. My 2013 Subaru Legacy with 145,000 miles made in America is still running fine - it has a 5 speed automatic and 6 cylinder engine. I have a 2018 Buick Envision AWD with 90,000 miles and no problems. It was made for 7 years before I bought it and GM if they make a car for a long time uses Six Sigma to improve the quality. I expect it will last at least 150,000 without much trouble. Also bought recently a 2023 Mazda CX-5 with 6 speed automatic with 3000 miles on it (powertrain is 9 years old). I expect that with maintenance to last 200,000 as well. Just have to pick cars built for a long time.

Se more insight from a current VB WRX owner:
    - You'll average 18 MPG if you love in an urban area because of the cold starts and short trips drain faster than long trips
    - Per the WRX forums, it's reccomend to change the oil every 3K miles
    - it's known thar WRXs have glass transmissions. They won't break within a couple uses but you do need to avoid money shifting with this one.
    - decent cargo space when you pull down the rear seats
    - They look much better tinted (subjective)
    - Car is low profile, need low profile ramps if you don't have your own shop, to fit a jack under the front. You could also jack it up from the pinch welds on the side but I don't like that.
    - Dealers can tell when you modify/flahs the ECU. So think before you use COBB access ports. Warranty work can be denied because of it.
    - 1st gear is not the best if you are an aggressive driver. Powerband prefers mid range. Higher end acceleration tapers off
    - Many smiles per gallon on a curvy roads where you are between 2nd - 4rth gear!

I can tell you from personal experience four wheel and snow made a massive difference on how that vehicle handled in the snow, this was that specific vehicle but once again that goes to the point depends on I guess how the vehicle actually transfers at that point because I was going up a hill watching other people slip and slide off the hill not been able to do anything up that Hill and I cruised right up at2 Wheel Dr. I would not have been able to get up

If you have the manual, probably bullet proof, but the cvt isn't that bad. Make sure you don't buy them over 50k miles and you service your LIFETIME cvt fluid early before you can't ever service it again because of clutch damage.

This one was done at 80k and needs another one in about a year or so with how much I drive.
I think Subaru America is the only one that claims their CVT fluid is "life-time."

I’ve never had a problem with an automatic Subaru, the 4 speed was bullet proof, and sure the CVT is always questionable even now, but we’ve had those run far and wide without issue as well. I’ve seen the turbo Subarus run for 100s of thousands of miles without much more than regular maintenance from normal driving. Aggressive driving is a different story, that will always have consequences.
