Yes, people here in the U.S. tend to get all wrapped around the axl over African slavery, but the truth is, every culture on this planet kept slaves or enslaved other people, at one time or the other. In fact, it continues to this day in some places.
In the case of Rome and the Church though, they pretty much tried to enslave the entire known world for the sake of building an empire.
And they decided that if they couldn't do it with a sword, they'd use religion.
      ...and a sword.
And due to that, I'd have to say that if I could only have one 'hero' in history, it's probably Hermann/Arminius, for showing the Roman Empire what a sword was really for.
...though I am rather fond of folks like Boudica and a few others as well.

Yes, everyone forgets the slaves that they had in the UK for example, and using children to go into small holes and they would some times die. Since I learned Dutch history too, they would steal people off their own land, especially orphans and take them on boats so they could help travel to Indonesia and other countries to get some spices. The folkish heathens often get a bad rap and have their beliefs misconstrued as simply "We don't like other races, so you can't play with us." In reality however, they make a much more cogent point. In heathenism, Odin is not just seen as a God, but as an ancestor of the Germanic ethnic group; and in virtually all native (non-Abrahamic) religions, ancestor veneration is incredibly important. If ancestor veneration is an important part of your faith, then you can't really properly practice the faith if you're praying to someone else's ancestors. In fact, you are actually dishonoring your own ancestors by doing so. For example if there was a Cherokee ceremony in which the tribe honored their ancestors by praying to the ancestors of the tribe, I would quite literally be unable to properly engage in that ceremony, not because the Cherokee don't like me, but because I can't pray to my Cherokee ancestors because I don't have Cherokee ancestors. That is the point that the folkish heathens are making. Stephen McNallen was one of original founders of the Germanic Heathen reconstruction in the 70's. He has always said that if someone who wasn't Germanic wanted to practice Germanic Heathenism, he would encourage them to look into their own ancestry for their own native faith and pray to their ancestors and the Gods of their people. Also, subbed.

Well, obviously Heathenism has a racial aspect to it because it was developed by cultural/geographical/linguistic influences. The founders of Heathenism were not concerned with Asian, African, North American, or South American pantheons and folklore. They were nationalistic, not political correct, and the concept of diversity was non-existent. Voodoo is the same, primarily based around African/South American folklore and most practitioners of Voodoo/Hoodoo whatever will most likely be black or latin, like most followers of Heathenism or Wicca will most likely be white or European. As a black man resulting from an interracial marriage, I've learned most people prefer to be with there own; there is no need to apologize.

This has given me an immense sense of freedom, liberation and lightness of mind.
This movement away from the "Abrahamic faiths" is picking up (Asatru, Zoroastrianism, Atheism, etc..) and I feel this is for the betterment not only for peace among humans, but more importantly for endangered animals and forests.

This very roughly scratched the Surface of Asatru, I would recommend touching on the principals of heathenry rather then the base aesthetic. I also recommend researching paths as Asatru is very often stigmatized as barbaric war bound and the media covering the practice casts a contemporary “Look mommy I’m a Viking” shroud over one of the deepest routed spiritual practices in history. The scarcity of literature makes understanding the practice tedious but I recommend looking to the Icelandic rebirth for sources.
I also recommend The Children of Odin by Padraic Colum as a good faith reference to Sturlson’s original adaptations.
The band Skáld provides some culturally fluent and insightful info on practice and ofcourse to consult many Vitkar Shield Brothers and Sorcerers / Rune Weavers for Influence, just remember our ways, trust nothing, mind your tongue, morality is subjective, as is honesty. A wise man at a table of wise men is just as much a fool as a rat is to a den of snakes.

I think there are two kinds of philosophies/religions at the core of the human attitude toward the world: working and living with Nature and all its manifestations, or against Her. This cannot work at a superficial level but must be deeply felt tangibly. Now that we and our cultures are all inspired by one mighty god, handing over the Earth to man for his exploitation, I think humanity must get closer and respect nature above himself, which can only be done through our emotions and experience. If Nature were our Gods, we wouldn't poison her atmosphere, the oceans, and rivers; we wouldn't destroy the Earth but respect Her and feel Her above and with us. We need Nature, and not the other way around.
So, I was always more drawn to Taoism, Shamanism, and European Paganism, which strongly sustains such principles. As the new generations must save this planet, there is no other choice for avoiding assured extinction. I believe that this path is much more appropriate for the survival of humanity-building a sustainable world in our real lives and in accord with its spirituality-than worshiping a single almighty god disconnected from our life support.

The more I argued with them, the better I came to know their dialectic. First they counted on the stupidity of their adversary, and then, when there was no other way out, they themselves simply played stupid. If all this didn't help, they pretended not to understand, or, if challenged, they changed the subject in a hurry, quoted platitudes which, if you accepted them, they immediately related to entirely different matters, and then, if again attacked, gave ground and pretended not to know exactly what you were talking about. Whenever you tried to attack one of these apostles, your hand closed on a jelly-like slime which divided up and poured through your fingers, but in the next moment collected again. But if you really struck one of these fellows so telling a blow that, observed by the audience, he couldn't help but agree, and if you believed that this had taken you at least one step forward, your amazement was great the next day. The j*w had not the slightest recollection of the day before, he rattled off his same old nonsense as though nothing at all had happened, and, if indignantly challenged, affected amazement; he couldn't remember a thing, except that he had proved the correctness of his assertions the previous day. Sometimes I stood there thunderstruck. I didn't know what to be more amazed at: the agility of their tongues or their virtuosity at lying. Gradually I began to hate them.

I am a Heathen and there are more than just Scandinavian (multiple) and Anglo-saxon traditions. I practice Urglaawe which comes out of the PA German braucherei and hexerei folk healing/mystic traditions. We tend to use the Sickle as our symbol instead of the Hammer as our focus is based more on agrarian tradition. We have cognate deities with our cousin traditions, but we also have some they don't and vice versa. But this is not the place for a dissertation.

It is good to see that the Amish and Mennonites are returning to the truth of nature though by comparison they are in many regards not so regressed and rife as those of modernity. I myself am Wotanist and recognize my wayward cousins return. I would hope they remember what their hex signs mean and see Ygdrassil in the Tree of Life motifs, the sun in their flower motifs. Seax here.

I am a Heathen and as such utterly dumbfounded by those that try to tie racism to our faith. The Gods are in many cases of mixed lineage, our stories tell of accepting everyone because above all else a person is judged by their actions. As a mater of fact you will often hear us say "We are our deeds". Yes there ARE idiots out there but the vast majority of us do not claim them.

Many families in Germany never converted to Christianity. They kept their Heathen beliefs and passed down the knowledge of how Heathenism is practiced. They kept ledgers of family members for hundreds of years going back and these books are coveted and are sought out by enemies of Heathens to destroy them. Heathenism is an ancestor based faith. In ancient times our ancestors buried their dead in burrows where when a child of 7 would resurrect the ancestor in the following manner: A child of 7 would not be given a proper name but a pet name after a bird or some other critter and when the child reach the age of 7 the skull and femur of an ancestor would be taken from the borough and the femur would be made into a flute and the child would play a tune on that flute and by breathing into the femur flute they would breath life back into the ancestor and the child would become the ancestor taking on the name of that particular person. National Socialism rose out of Heathenism. Read Jungs Thesis on the rise of National Socialism. Also, the Volkisch movement is far from dead in Germany.

I’m of Danish descent and I do practice Ásatru and am fairly new to it. I am also Buddhist because you can overlap Buddhism with anything, as it says in the scripture and books I have read on it. I wouldn’t say that I am mainly heathen but I do have some of the same ideas of it. I look at the gods as people and as guides. I don’t pray to them per se but I do blots every so often if I feel I need an answer to something beyond. One of the things people assume is that like you mentioned in the video, that heathens and pagans get a bad rap for their beliefs and assume that I don’t accept people of different races and sexualities when in reality I do. Anyways, I just wanted to post my thoughts as to a little of my beliefs

A 'Heathen' is simply anyone who doesn't subscribe to any of the 'usual' religions. ( Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. ) It was once an insult used by Christians toward anyone who wasn't part of their religion.
Modern 'Heathenism' or 'Heathenry' simply seems to be the Germanic form of Wicca, more or less.
I don't have a problem with it, except for the Hate Groups wanting to use it as some sort of tool or justification for their idiocy.
In fact, the more info that can be dug up on ancient Germanic beliefs and practices that AREN'T Norse, the better, as far as I'm concerned.
Rome burning cost the world a lot of information on those things, since most of what is known was written down by the Romans.
One thing is very clear though; all Germanic people are NOT Norse, and they had their own way of doing things.
...each and every individual one of 'em, if the amount of time they spent fighting with each other is any example.
For those that don't know, Modern Germany didn't exist until 1871, I believe. ( Maybe 1872. I don't have references in front of me, and am lousy with dates. )
Before that, it was just a collection of about 50 tribes, then finally city-states.
...and they pretty much fought constantly.
No wonder the Romans liked using them as mercenaries. They'd fight anyone, any where, any time.
Anyway... anything that can preserve or regain some of what's been lost is okay by me... as long as it's not used to start a bunch of bullshit that isn't good for ANYBODY.

Norse are Germanic and you are completely missing the point, "hate groups" want you to honor the blood in your own veins, your ancestors, your tribe. Not that of another people and those of us that are true to the old ways won't permit you to do otherwise in our presence because the worst thing one can do is poison their own well.

    • @guarddog318
      @guarddog318 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@wyrdwildman1689, I'm aware that the Norse are Germanic... Just as the Dutch are, and the Frisians, and a whole bunch of other people.
I'm also aware that the biggest difference in the Germanic people is language and culture.
I'm also very much aware that most people have no idea of what a particular word originally meant, and how much that meaning has changed or BEEN CHANGED over the years and centuries.
"Heathen" and "Pagan" didn't start off as the slurs or insults they're taken as today.
...which was MY point; it still all comes down to a form of tribalism, and an "us vs them" mindset.
Even among the 50+ tribes of what is now modern Germany, things weren't generally the same from one tribe to the next... and thus the constant fighting among themselves.
And although the Norse and other Germans generally shared the same pantheon of deities, their individual religious/spiritual practices and beliefs were NOT the same.
I am very much of Germanic descent... but I am NOT Scandinavian, nor possibly even what could or would be called "German" these days, even though genetically there's no real difference between me and any of them.
It's simply a matter of who lived in what area, and what they spoke.

@No White Guilt oh NO babe Im certainly not anything but caucasian! Sorry if you got confused by my comment. I'm definitely not running around with feathers in my hair in my moccasin slippers lol. Im NOT a Cherokee or any tribe of Native, or any kind of POC, to be very clear. I merely have 2 known, semi close ancestors that are Native. Just 2 in the generations and generations of caucasian ancestors in my genealogy that I've identified. I've never had a DNA test because I really dont need one. I've done it all by hand and census, birth certificates, marriage certificates and death certificates and draft cards. I am definitely, very proudly, European-American. Not only European-American, but Northern European-American. Super white. Mostly Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian, and I am VERY proud of those ancestors and mostly interested in their stories and their ancient traditions and cultures and I teach my two children everything I know about their European ancestors and to be proud of them and who they are. I will admit tho it is interesting to learn about the one or two exceptions...the Native American grandmother in my family's ancient photo album, I cant lie. Her story matters to me, and I do wonder what her life was like before and after she married into a white family and respect her culture. But I am def not of her culture, you understand? She might be Chickasaw, actually, as well as the great grandfather. Unfortunately, there is no way to ever know. Before I knew I had a speck of Native blood, I actually went to the dermatologist for a certain skin condition I had and she asked me if I had a Native relative because it's a condition she said she usually only sees in white people with a close Native ancestor. I said, "NO WAY I'm 100% white tyvm!" Lol Then I found out I actually did have a cpl somewhat close Native ancestors which was fun to know about, but I'd NEVER think I'm a Native or say I have a CLOSE Native ancestor. That's insane talk. Merely interested and respectful of who they were because I'm interested in and respectful of everyone on my family tree...especially the most recent 5 generations back. The Native grandfather even took his wedding photo with my European great-grandmother in his ceremonial headdress and everything! It's a very impressive pic. But yea, I'm just a proudly white girl that just merely respects the few Native ancestors I know I have. I hope that doesn't make me a race traitor. ❤✊🏻😄

The Nordic and Germanic peoples from one and two millennia left the world an incredible archive of knowledge and way of interpreting the world. I appreciate how this video doesn't shy away from some of the unfortunate political realities associated with the resurgence of some of these traditions in the 21st century. It is an incredible pity that these treasure troves of Western culture are bedraggled by certain swaths of people who would use them as operating systems for (I'll be kind and simply say:) nationalist agendas. It is even more of a pity that these traditions-the Germanic traditions in particular-will never lose the stigma ethnocentric nationalist movements branded them with; particularly since modern incarnations of right-wing nationalists continue to draw from that well. So it is encouraging to know that there are groups who are taking a more inclusive approach. It's easy for me to say this, considering I never had to live through the Nazi horror, but when I think of 20th century Germany, I prefer to think of the Weimar Republic days of 1919-1933. That was a beautiful period in Germany's history culturally speaking. Sadly, it's mostly forgotten because of what would come after. Like Germans knew in the Weimar Republic days, the world is globalizing into the village it had always been but that nobody could see due to the merchant & banker-class created illusion of nation-state'ism. Thanks to the internet that village is easier to see as it continues to emerge. Having sub-groups attempt to use these archives as a means to promote ethnocentrism in this day and age should no longer be tolerated. Cultures and traditions have to evolve. When they stop evolving they die. It's not Stonehenge or the Sphinx, but the creation of the Internet is an epochal marker in human history that we're all the first generation of. Now is the time for this alpha generation to infuse new life and new meaning into those old traditions, particularly the ones trying to be hijacked back into irrelevance, to allow them to evolve and live on. If not, then these traditions risk remaining zombified via the like-Nazi-minded. But if humanity can manage to infuse new meaning to go along with the old meaning, who knows, maybe in one of these centuries humanity will even cleanse the context of the swastika from what it is now to what it was then. That would be something.

Whether you have skandinavian dna in your blood or not, does not matter. During the viking age, norwegians in Ireland tried spreading the norse faith to the irish locals in areas they controlled. You also have the norsemen and danes who married women from the British Isles and eastern Europe, and brought them back to Skandinavia. Many of these women likely converted to the norse faith, as we have found gaelic women buried in norse pagan burial mounds in Norway. Therefore, no matter your ethnicity, you can convert if you feel like it is the right thing to do.

    • @systerkeno
      @systerkeno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's not nazi ideals. It's just how traditions connected to paganism works around the world. If you go to Ethiopia or Gambia...Swaziland or Malawi.. All pagan traditions are based on the folk being connected to it. The same in most Asian areas. If one feels like honoring gods even if it's from another nation or people, that's okay. It's not like people are going to hate you. People might have a hard time understanding it. I was a Rastafari pagan for many years and almost every Ethiopian thought it was strange that I honored another people's God when I had no connection to the land. I then realized that, in contrast to my friends with Ethiopian ancestors, I did not feel any real connection to the Ethiopian land and nature, so I turned around and found my right place honoring the gods of my land and ancestors. Go your way and try things out but beware that it's absolutely not a nazi thing or a racist thing. That can be quite loaded to claim. Some people in Germany and Europe just happened to start believing in the norse gods again, it wasn't even official NSDAP belief. NSDAP were officially Christian, not pagan. Many of the people who started the pagan wave at that time were actually Slavic people who happened to live in or close to Germany. No-one wants to be compared to nazis just because keeping traditions that were there long long before they were a thing.
