    In am much awaited for video, I share with you my thoughts on the different names for the faith. I will explore the meaning behind each label, as well as dive into the usage and experience I have had with each.
    I open this video with an offering of wisdom from the Allfather.
    My name is Jacob and I am a Norse Pagan. I started my journey with the Old Gods in 2016, in 2019 I was giving an offering to Odin outside of my home and I felt his presence before me. In a few short words I knew my task ahead of me, I needed to gather the folk. With backgrounds in running my own photography business, and my time managing restaurants, I had the skills to make a difference.
    I started with an Instagram account in June 2019 to start reaching out to others for the first time, and in August 2019 I began my journey into youtube. While it was a slow journey at first, I continued to make videos in hopes that they could help others who started out lost like me. By February of 2020 I made the first huge step into what the Wisdom of Odin was created to do, I put out a call to gather the folk. Within a week I had 9 people ready to meet in Kentucky for an Ostara festival, and it was one of the most beautiful days of our lives.
    We started something on that hill, we set in motion something I think will change the world. We started to plan the next gathering a day after returning home. Midsummer would become a life changing experience all over again. We gathered 27 people to worship the old gods in Kentucky.
    In between those two gatherings the Wisdom of Odin sky rocketed in viewership and community support. While I am so honored to be watched by so many, my ability to respond to meesages is coming to an end. All I can do is to continue to promote these gatherings, and make videos to help others.
    There is a dream that exist, a dream that grows closer by the day. A dream to build a hall in North America! Keep watching for updates on its development. This hall will not be easy and it will have cost, I am working with some amazing people to make this happen and I hope when the time comes youll be willing to take up hammers to assist us in its construction.
    Patreon has become an amazing community, and through the patronage of over 100 people it has become one of the fastest growing Patreon's in the world. The greatest benifit I can give is a Discord community that may be one of the best out there. With over 20 admins it is a well oiled machine of constant conversations on the Gods and the old ways. If you wish to join this Discord community please consider donating at the first level of my Patreon ($5). With your support I can soon become a full time youtuber while also keeping this channel ad free!
    This is the most amazing journey I could of ever hoped to be on, we are doing amazing things my friends, my folk. We have much work to do.

    I also identify myself as a Norse pagan for pretty much the same reason you do, but something I've found that most Norse pagans/heathens/Asatru neglect are the the Jotnar. I find them to be just as important as the Aesir and Vanir. My practice includes deities from all three groups. Some of the Gods are, in fact, Jotun. If you read the creation myth carefully, from the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, you will find that many of the Gods are identified as being half Jotun. Odin and his brothers are half Jotun, Thor is half Jotun. Hel is full Jotun, Loki is full Jotun, Aegir is full Jotun. Odin and his brothers gave breath, appearance and mind to two trees, Ask and Embla, the first two humans. The world was made from Ymir's body, which means that all living things are of Ymir, even us humans. All humans and Gods and Jotnar are of Ymir. We are all connected.

      Åsatru is generally more strict following the old ways as it is based on norse religion, while paganism is more individual and has less norms. You will find that Åsatru has just as much focus on vanir and jotnar as æser, because it is another cultural approach. Paganism is more focused on good/ evil and the duality aspect, as much of the cultural ideas in paganism seem to stem from reformed christianity, and thus are quite modern. And paganists seem to bring these christian ideas with them into their paganism, like a personal relationship to the god, individual offerings, revelations, personal ceremonies and holy objects. In the norse religion we find very little of this, as this was not part of their culture.

      There is actually a lot of evidence to suggest that the vanir were not a seperate group od gods, but more a subsect of the aesir.

    • @geirarnehelland7271
      @geirarnehelland7271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gregorypavlunenko4953 There are suggestions in norse mythology of the war between the æsir of asgard and the vanir of Vanaheim, which strongly indicates they were two separate groups. Some of the vanir in Asgard were the result of hostage exchange that would settle peace between the two groups. Njord and Frey were the two most prominent vanir exchanged, and Hønir and Mimir from the æsir.

      @gregorypavlunenko4953 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geirarnehelland7271 while I am not the best informed on this topic, from what i can tell the prose edda describes it as a war between the aesir and vanir, but the poetic edda just calls it a war of the gods and does specifically state that it is the aesir and vanir who are fighting each other. Rather it seems to imply that the aesir and vanir could have been fighting some other force. For more information i recommend you watch jackson Crawford's video on the subject.

    Suggestion for another video: red flags to look for before joining Pagan groups.
    Now let me explain:
    Some people who seek Paganism as their belief path also seek a group of individuals who are on the same page. However there are people out there who basically take advantage of people's curiosity. And what happens is that new folk stumble upon a cult and not a group of free-thinking individuals who are sharing The Path. Cults are very damaging not only for those people, but also and reputation of Paganism as a whole, painting Pagans in negative light by media and authority alike. And I believe that such video can be great educational thing for everybody, whether you are Pagan or just curious about the practice.
    (Also suggesting such video because at one point before pandemic kicked in, our local TV literally blamed Pagans for organising drug abuse gatherings and that made me so mad.)

When my boss found out I was a Norse pagan he drilled me for days about it until he realized I wasn't affiliated with them. So there may be some truth to the media outlet just not in the religious sense. With all that being said I now stay a little more reserved unless I'm asked about my faith or the Mjolnir I wear.

      The faith does not use either term and has millions of members in the USA and refuses to allow other types of whites or aliens entrance and list their church as Christian. . A very anti-universalist , anti-mixing belief system that has hundred of churches who follow a ancient Germanic god. The churches do not have a open door policy. Christians think it is a christian church and its members know its not but wear the cross, The churches have even managed to collect millions of dollars of donations from Christians to help fund their expansion and grow new businesses, The businesses of course accept donations, A christian charity and provide 1 percent of their profits to the churches. Their product is slightly higher then other stores, All followers must speak their ancient tongue. Been around for many decades in the USA. The followers look a little like clones. The faith has preachers who dress like Christians speaking the word of their Germanic god. The church has also managed to get money from liberal donations. The faith has not changed in the last 50 years or more and attempts to stay in the law and has a moral code , values and a rule set and are not vikings but the followers of a ancient Germanic god. When you consider all the members and houses the faith has a collective wealth in the billions. Houses are like good sized clans.

    Nice video brother! But I just want to add to something you said about Asatru, which is “asatru is only believing in the Æsir” which is correct when it comes to the translation of the word. But here in Norway, in the asatru communities they usually state that asatru means to believe in the Æsir but that the æsir is only one part of the diversity of gods and beings that is in this “religion”. So even thought the name is stuck to being “the belief in the Æsir” I do believe that most asatru communities is not bound to just believe in them but all of the gods and beings from Norse mythology/paganism :) but again, thanks for a beautiful video with explaining this to the folk! :)

    I worship the old gods of the North... Thor was Thunar in England, Oden was Woden or Od in England... All over Northern Europe people had a similar pantheon before the arrival of the christians, they weren't just Norse, they were of the North of Europe... I worship the old gods of the North...

      @geirarnehelland7271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, they weren't the same. Even though they stem from the same name, they were different, and there were local variants. Frey/ Freyja and Njord is couple of gods worshipped only in the Nordic countries, for example, and there are several examples of gods that were worshipped on the continent and in England that were not present in the norse pantheon. And even if they had a similar name, that doesn't mean the gods were similar. You have to remember that in the Nordic countries these gods were "alive" for several hundred years longer than on the continent, and already long before that the local gods had been given their own myths and properties. So no, the Norse gods are not the gods of Northern Europe, and the gods on the continent and in England were not the gods of the norse.

    I 'became' a pagan...because I realized I was already living like one (Everything a part from the knowledge and worship of the gods/ancestors) And now, upon reflecting my past, I can see that they were watching and guiding me all along. It literally brought me tears when I figured out some MASSIVE moments in my life where the gods played a part.

    I like the term Germanic Pagan. It points out that the gods were worshiped not only in Scandinavia but also among the continental German people and the Anglo-Saxons over on the isles. They may have slightly different names but they are the same gods. (Odin among Norse, Wodan among Anglo-Saxons, and Wotan among Germans for example). It's like a Pan-Germanic faith.

    I really liked this video and I wished that I had encountered it a few years back when I was looking for an explanation of my experiences with the Gods. It seems that I read somewhere that heathenism is a term defining Northern tribal/Germanic religions, and that paganism described the more southern or Greco Roman traditions. I was wondering about your thoughts on this?

      I havent seen that about pagan being Greco Roman. The only team I have heard tied to the Greco Roman faith is Hellenistic. And of course as I mentioned Heathen being tied specifically to germanic belief. I couldn't find anything concrete on self identifying terms by pre-christian practitioners really at all

    I think once again you hit the nail when you say that this religion doesn't need a label and it never really had a label and it's really really cool you want to normalize that again. I personally try to stay away from Christianized and loaded terms because I don't actually subscribe to one pantheon of gods, I worship local gods as I travel, although I bring the Norse gods with me as "a piece of home" as I travel too. But of course when you're talking to other people of different faiths of other pagans it does help to have a streamlined term like Norse Pagan ect so I totally agree with you here. Skal.

    Just a few minor points of semantics: Icelandic Ásatrú is quite different from its American counterpart, though neither necessarily neglects the Vanir, and the name was never meant to suggest so. In the U.S. context, 'Ásatrú' is, as you noted, the most familiar term, but it usually refers to practices which trace their lineage to the Asatru Free/Folk Assembly and the Troth. Because of the circumstances of that particular branch's development, it tends to be rather eclectic, borrowing from Wicca and emphasizing magical practices like runic divination. Some prefer to avoid the term in order to differentiate themselves from Wicca's perceived "fluffiness" or from the AFA's racism.
    Heathenry is a broader category subsuming all Germanic religions as practiced today, including the Norse, Anglo Saxon, etc. Reconstructionists, who try to hew closely to the textual and archaeological evidence (or at least take a great deal of inspiration from it), usually consider themselves Heathen. Reconstructionists can come across as disdainful of UPG, eclecticism, and magic, but it's not any absolute prohibition: rather, the sense is that any innovation or mysticism ought to be well grounded in the old religion as the historical evidence describes it.
    One sometimes encounters other terms, like Forn Siðr or Forn Sed, but these have limited currency in the U.S. Odinists are usually racist and need not detain us. Vanatru, Rokkatru, etc. focus on specific parts of the Norse pantheon. Other than Jacob, I haven't seen many people identifying as Norse Pagan, but I suspect we'll see more. Of course there are other terms as well. I myself prefer the term Heathenry.

Been trying to search and keep close to my ancestors as much as possible, which the Celtic will be from my fathers side hundred percent English from England. But my mothers side my grandmother she was Irish and from her she was Native American Navjaho. 4 Generations. My Grandfather on my mothers side, He had a little bit Native American, and was English from the Lords of Manor, and German. When my cousin went to Stockholm England to see the grave markers for her first time there, the church care taker told her that they are buried on the oldest part with the church from the 1300 hundred's. they were Anti -Catholic, Anti - Prosadant, they had there own customs , beliefs and Gods way of doing things and was very well liked and was very well liked in the community, and the church was only 9 miles away from Stonehedge. I told my mother about it , and she said maybe they were Saxon what do you mean like a vikings. So Thats what drew me to your channel. My second Ancestral calling to the old ways, from both sides of my parents. Sorry so long but had to explain the story, but can you describe or define what a saxon is a little more compared from the other ones. as well. I will say, as a Swede, I was told about "Asatro" in my elementary school back in the late 90s. So it's not all modern and Icelandic, because I think there is no way our old teacher (who taught us equal parts Asatro and Christian myths) knew about modern paganism. In Swedish, Asatro literally means "belief in the Aesir" (Asarna).

    Hey, from Seville, Spain! 😃 I'm 58, half American and half Spaniard. I've lived in Spain for most of my life. Originally Catholic, became a Wiccan about 30 years ago, but it didn't satisfy me, and very shortly after, Odin called me in an extremely vivid dream. I didn't know who the heck Hrafnagud was, until I looked it up. "The Raven God," one of the many heiti for Odin.
    Now, I'm a gyđia and seiđkona.
    See, here in Spain, generally speaking, we see the terms you used differently. We don't use the term "heathen" or "etenista" (the Spanish translation), and most of us prefer the terms "odinista" or "asatru". Unfortunately, for a few years, I thought I was an odinista, until I discovered the hush-hush secret that most of them in my kindred were far right racists and that's something I can never condone. I immediately left. Here, us universalists (the open mined people like me, who don't link blood and ethnicity to our faith, despite me having a lot of Visigothic - Spanish Germanic - and Anglo-Saxon blood, and possibly a bit of Scandinavian in my veins) call ourselves Asatru and worship both the Æsir and the Vanir. I myself, am of the open Diana Paxton type, and my patron gods are Freya and Thor.
    Then you speak about the term Norse Pagan. Many people in our old path community (BTW, the old path is called Forn Syđ in present-day Denmark, I believe) tend to associate Norse Pagan with what we call Wiccatru: basically Wicca and its rituals, but using the Norse Gods. Not everyone, of course, but most. Glad to have discovered your channel a few moments ago! Could we speak through Instagram? My name there is Freya and my user ID is emilyjernigan (in honor of my 2 grandmas). I'd love to tell you my story

    I have an issue. You did not go over the problems with the AFA & why the Asatru label is problematic in the United States. The import of “volkish” in their beliefs, which is WS in another guise. This doesn’t generally apply to Asatru/Acetru in Scandinavia or Northern Europe. Although, there has been some U.S. volkish infiltration in the last few years.
    Now general Heathenry and Norse Paganism you described quite well.

    Slavic paganism is called Rodnovery, term "Slavic paganism" is very rarely used in eastern countries. Also I'd like to say that you can't label this term only to Russia (I don't assume you did, it's just more for other people). Rodnovery had the same "root" in every slavic country or tribe, but it varied more or less (depending on region), for example, Czech Rodnovery will be differentfrom Polish because Czech's were closer to german tribes etc. Moreover there's need to mention that only a part of today's Russia was praying to slavic Gods because today's Russia is so big that it embraces other cultures. Great content tho, I really enjoyed it and I'm waiting for more. Keep up this great work of yours

    “Asatru” is a modern term, but it’s a fitting one that comes from our own language. Also, it doesn’t exclude the Vanir. It means “troth with the Aesir”, but it also doesn’t exclude the Ásynjur. The Vanir are included under the larger umbrella of the Aesir after their war. It’s similar to using the term “mankind” as opposed to “humans”.
